The following section covers the cooling system specifications.
Scene Number: Scene Title Total Engine Cooling System Capacity
2075 1030
Audio
The total engine cooling system capacity is 1.6 gallons, 6 liters.
Engines fitted with EGR will have a larger cooling system capacity.
Scene Number: Scene Title Pressure Cap Requirements
2075 1060
Audio
The coolant pressure cap is rated at 15psi, 100 kilo Pascal.
Scene Number: Scene Title Cooling System Components
2075 1070
Audio
The following section will cover the Cooling System Components for this engine.
Scene Number: 2075 1090 Scene Title Coolant Pump

Audio
The ISF2.8 engine is equipped with a high volume coolant pump due to EGR cooling
requirements. This higher volume pump is found on both the light and heavy duty versions
of the ISF2.8 engine.
Scene Number: Scene Title Engine Water Jacket
2075 1100
Audio
Coolant fills the engine water jacket in order to cool the piston cylinders.

Scene Number: Scene Title Thermostat Housing
2075 1110
Audio
The integral thermostat housing, located on the front of the engine, provides a location for
mounting the single thermostat vertically in the cooling system.
Scene Number: 2075 1120 Scene Title Thermostat

Audio
The thermostat features small steel pins in the sealing disc that allow a small amount of
coolant to pass through even when the thermostat is in the closed position.
This feature allows any air trapped in the cylinder block or cylinder head to vent at the
highest point in the engine. With this design, the highest point is the thermostat housing. The
thermostat is unlike traditional Cummins designs because it lacks a thermostat bypass circuit.
1210 Cooling System Deaeration
The F2.8 engine uses a single thermostat equipped with deaeration pins. The deaeration pins,
or jiggle pins as they are sometimes called, allow any air trapped in the engines water jacket
to vent through the thermostat to the top tank of the radiator.
The movement of the pins allows any bubbles that may have formed on the underside of the
thermostat to collapse and the air from within the bubbles to vent through the orifices.
Scene Number: 2075 1130 Scene Title Coolant Temperature Sensor

Audio
Located in the thermostat housing, the Coolant Temperature Sensor is used by the ECM to
determine the temperature of coolant in the engine water-jacket.
Scene Number: Scene Title ISF2.8 Light Duty Engines
2075 1140
Audio
The ISF2.8 Light Duty engine requires an EGR system to meet legislated emissions
requirements. The EGR system uses engine coolant to cool exhaust gasses before they are
introduced into the engines intake manifold.
Scene Number: Scene Title ISF2.8 Heavy Duty Engines
2075 1160
Audio
The ISF2.8 Heavy Duty engine requires a Selective Catalytic Reduction system, or SCR
system. OEMs may use engine water jacket heat to prevent damage to SCR system
components during cold weather operation.
Scene Number: Scene Title F2.8 Base Engine Flow
2075 1180
Audio
The F2.8 base engine coolant flow is typical of most Cummins engines.

Scene Number: Scene Title ISF2.8 Light Duty Engine Flow
2075 1190
Audio
The ISF2.8 Light Duty engine features additional cooling system components that create
some differences in the coolant flows. Let take a look at these differences.
Scene Number: 2075 1210 Scene Title Cooling System Deaeration

Audio
The F2.8 engine uses a single thermostat equipped with deaeration pins. The deaeration pins,
or jiggle pins as they are sometimes called, allow any air trapped in the engines water jacket
to vent through the thermostat to the top tank of the radiator. The movement of the pins
allows any bubbles that may have formed on the underside of the thermostat to collapse and
the air from within the bubbles to vent through the orifices.
Scene Number: 2075 1220 Scene Title EGR Cooler

Audio
The ISF2.8 Light Duty engines feature an EGR cooler. The EGR cooler is an air-to-fluid
heat exchanger constructed of stainless steel. It is very important that the EGR cooler is
properly deaerated whenever the cooling system is being filled to prevent air pockets within
the cooler that may damage it.
Scene Number: 2075 1230 Scene Title Cooling System Flow

Audio
The following scenes look at the coolant flow through the F2.8 liter Engine.
Scene Number: Scene Title Water Pump Inlet Coolant Flow
2075 1240
Audio
Coolant flow begins as coolant is drawn into the water pump inlet from the radiator.
Scene Number: Scene Title Oil Cooler Coolant Flow
2075 1250
Audio
Coolant from the water pump travels to the oil cooler to cool the engine oil.
Scene Number: 2075 1260 Scene Title Block Coolant Flow

Audio
From the oil cooler, the coolant enters the water jacket cavity in the block. Coolant travels
around the cylinder walls, carrying combustion heat to the top of the block.
Scene Number: Scene Title Head Gasket Orifices
2075 1270
Audio
Coolant passes from the block into the head through orifices in the head gasket.

Scene Number: Scene Title Upper Cavity Coolant Flow
2075 1290
Audio
The coolant in the lower cavity in the cylinder head connects to the upper cavity through a
series of passages in the cylinder head.
Once in the upper cavity, coolant flows forward toward the thermostat housing.
Scene Number: Scene Title Thermostat Bypass Flow
2075 1300
Audio
When the engine is below the opening temperature specification, the thermostat is closed,
allowing the coolant to bypass the radiator and flow back to the water pump inlet through
the thermostat bypass tube.
Scene Number: Scene Title Thermostat Open Flow
2075 1310
Audio
As the coolant temperature increases to the specified opening temperature, the thermostat
starts to open and coolant flow to the bypass begins to be restricted.
Scene Number: 2075 1320 Scene Title Thermostat Open Flow

Audio
When the engine operating temperature increases above the opening temperature
specification, the thermostat completely opens, blocking the bypass passage to the water
pump and opening the outlet to the radiator.
The engine must never be operated without a thermostat. Without a thermostat, the coolant
recirculates, by-passing the radiator, causing the engine to overheat.
Scene Number: 2075 1335 Scene Title EGR Coolant Flow

Audio
Engines with EGR use engine coolant to cool EGR exhaust gas. Coolant travels form the
water pump to the inlet of the EGR cooler.
Once in the EGR cooler, the coolant travels perpendicular to the EGR exhaust gas.
After cooling the EGR Exhaust Gas the coolant travels back to Thermostat Housing.
A portion of coolant is redirected from the EGR Cooler to the EGR Valve in order to cool it
and then is directed back to the EGR Cooler.
