Upon completion of this course the technician will be capable of:
Recognizing the components of the ISF2.8 chain drive system and
demonstrating knowledge of the service procedure for the ISF2.8 chain drive system.
Scene Number: 2086 1015 Scene Title Chain Drive System Introduction

Audio
The following section will cover the components of the chain drive system.
Scene Number: Scene Title Chain Drive System
2086 1020
Audio
ISF2.8 engines transfer the movement from the crankshaft to the camshaft by the use of a
chain drive system installed at the rear of the engine.
The crankshaft turns an idler gear which carries the chain drive idler sprocket. The idler
sprocket transfers the movement to the camshaft sprocket via the drive chain. The camshaft
sprocket is attached to the overhead camshaft, enabling the camshaft to turn and operate the
valves, and the vacuum pump. The idler gear also turns the fuel pump gear.
One section of the chain drive system is mounted on the block and is enclosed by the
flywheel housing. The second section extends to the cylinder head and is enclosed in a
sprocket housing, which also provides a mounting location for the chain tensioner. The
sprocket housing has a aluminum cover to protect the components.
The chain drive system is splash lubricated by oil that flows from an opening in the rocker
lever cover to the sprocket housing. This splash lubrication then feeds the camshaft sprocket
and drive chain.

Scene Number: Scene Title Camshaft Sprocket Housing
2086 1030
Audio
The camshaft sprocket housing is a cast aluminum component that sits on the rear faces of
both the cylinder head and the cylinder block, and the top face of the flywheel housing. It
features a pressed-in-place seal that prevents the oil that flows inside it from getting out.
To provide correct sealing, the camshaft sprocket housing must always be first pre-tightened
to the cylinder head, then tightened to the flywheel housing, and then fully tightened to the
cylinder head.
This means that every time the flywheel housing is removed, the sprocket housing must also
be loosened and re-tightened using the correct sequence.
The sprocket housing also provides a mounting location and oil feed to the chain tensioner.
The camshaft speed sensor is also mounted on the side of the sprocket housing.
Scene Number: 2086 1040 Scene Title Camshaft Sprocket Housing Cover

Audio
The sprocket housing cover sits on the sprocket housing, and seals the components inside.
It extends down to the flywheel housing to provide sealing between the two housings.
Scene Number: 2086 1050 Scene Title Timing Speed Ring

Audio
The timing speed ring has four equally spaced main teeth and one sync tooth.
The camshaft speed sensor uses these teeth to determine the position of the engine, and also
acts as a backup for the main speed sensor.
The timing speed ring is positioned on the camshaft via a d-flat feature.
Scene Number: 2086 1060 Scene Title Camshaft Sprocket

Audio
The camshaft sprocket sits on the camshaft nose, and transfers the movement of the chain to
the camshaft.
The camshaft sprocket is not doweled into the camshaft, it is placed between the camshaft
nose collar and the timing speed ring.
It is held in place by the clamp force of the camshaft bolt, transferred by the timing speed
ring.
Scene Number: 2086 1070 Scene Title Crankshaft Gear

Audio
The crankshaft gear is a straight-cut gear and sits on the rear crank nose beside the
crankshaft palm.
It transfers the movement of the crankshaft to the idler gear.

Scene Number: Scene Title Idler Gear and Shaft
2086 1080
Audio
The idler gear is a straight-cut gear and it has twice the number of teeth compared to the
crankshaft gear. This results in the idler gear rotating half as fast as the crankshaft, causing
the camshaft to turning at half speed. The idler gear is mounted on the idler shaft, which is
bolted into the cylinder block.
The idler shaft sits on the cylinder block on a ring dowel that locates its position.
The idler shaft’s orientation is fixed by use of a pin on the shaft itself.
The orientation of the shaft is important, because the shaft has an oil drilling that provides
lubrication to the idler gear.
The whole assembly is held together on the block by a capscrew that goes through the shaft.
Scene Number: 2086 1090 Scene Title Idler Sprocket

Audio
The idler sprocket sits on the idler shaft and is mounted on the idler gear by four capscrews.
It transfers the movement of the idler gear to the
drive chain.
Scene Number: 2086 1100 Scene Title Drive Chain

Audio
The drive chain is a roller type steel chain with 82 links, and
it takes the movement of the idler sprocket and
transfers it to the camshaft sprocket.
Scene Number: 2086 1110 Scene Title Chain Guides

Audio
There are two plastic chain guides that sit on either side of the chain, to provide smooth
operation.
The guides keep the chain from flapping by providing a path it can run on, they also keep the
chain under tension by transferring the force of the chain tensioner onto it.
One of the chain guides is fixed at both ends, one end is attached to the cylinder block and
the other end to the cylinder head.
The other chain guide is fixed only at the cylinder block end, and the chain tensioner pushes
it at the other end towards the chain to provide tension.

Scene Number: Scene Title Chain Tensioner
2086 1120
Audio
The chain tensioner sits in a bore on the camshaft sprocket housing, and pushes the mobile
chain guide towards the chain.
It is held in place by a cap that is located on the sprocket housing by two capscrews.
The chain tensioner is made of a telescopic barrel with a spring inside which assists at the
startup of the engine, but the significant tension force is achieved by oil pressure.
Oil is fed by a drilling inside the sprocket housing to the tensioner cap, and from there goes
into the tensioner.
The tensioner has a check valve in the oil intake to prevent oil from flowing back, and it has
a leakage gap between the two concentric pieces.
Scene Number: 2086 1130 Scene Title Overhead Camshaft Timing Introduction

Audio
The following section will cover timing the speed ring on the overhead camshaft.
Scene Number: 2086 1140 Scene Title Preparatory Steps

Audio
Begin the overhead camshaft timing speed ring procedure by
disconnecting the batteries,
removing the overhead camshaft drive chain tensioner,
removing the overhead camshaft sprocket housing cover, and then
removing the vacuum pump.
Scene Number: 2086 1150 Scene Title Barring Engine to TDC

Audio
Rotate the engine to TDC, using the engine barring tool, part number 3824591.
Scene Number: 2086 1160 Scene Title Camshaft Locking Plate Installation

Audio
Next, install the camshaft locking plate, part number 4919107, in place of the vacuum pump
to lock the camshaft at TDC.
Torque the camshaft locking plate to specification.

Refer to Quickserve Online for the correct torque specification.
