Scene Number: Scene Title Lube Oil Sump
2076 1030
Audio
The F2.8 series engines feature front or rear sump options allowing the engine to be adapted
for multiple applications.
Scene Number: Scene Title Lube Oil Pump
2076 1050
Audio
F2.8 series engines feature a rotary lube oil pump. The rotary pump is directly driven by the
crankshaft and is contained in the engine’s front cover. The pump has two moving parts. The
internal gear is driven by the crankshaft. The external gear is offset from the center of the
internal gear forming an eccentric. As the gears rotate, a low pressure area is created as the
gear teeth move apart, creating suction that draws oil into the pump.
As the gears continue to rotate, a high pressure area is created, pressurizing the oil. The oil
pump is a positive displacement pump and produces a higher volume of oil than is required
by the engine. The excess oil is diverted to the inlet of the lube oil pump. This type of
system is referred to as a Dump-to-Pump system.
Scene Number: Scene Title Lube Oil Pressure Regulator
2076 1060
Audio
The lube oil pressure regulator assembly is located in the engine’s front cover. The pressure
regulator protects the engine oil seals from excessive pressure. When the pressure regulator
opens excessive oil pressure is vented to the inlet of the lube oil pump.

The cylinder block is critical to the lube system. It provides a mounting location for the lube
oil pump, the front cover and the lube oil cooler housing.
The cylinder block also houses the oil rifle, transfer drillings, and the piston cooling nozzles.
Oil is also transferred from the main oil rifle to the main bearing journals for crankshaft
lubrication.
Scene Number: 2076 1100 Scene Title Piston Cooling Galleries

Audio
Each piston receives a directed oil flow to the piston cooling gallery from the piston cooling
nozzle. The piston cooling gallery refers to the area of the piston where the lubrication oil
flow is directed. When oil arrives at the piston cooling gallery it is directed to multiple areas
such as the piston crown for cooling and to the piston pin for lubrication of the piston pin
and upper connecting rod bushings.
Scene Number: Scene Title Rear Gear Train
2076 1120
Audio
Oil from the pan provides splash lubrication to the camshaft gear, crankshaft gear, camshaft
timing chain, and fuel pump drive gear in the rear gear housing.
Scene Number: 2076 1140 Scene Title Timing Chain Lubrication

Audio
The camshaft timing chain and sprockets receive splash lubrication from the idler gear in the
rear gear housing.
Scene Number: Scene Title Crankcase Breather Flow
2076 1200
Audio
The F2.8 liter engine uses an open crankcase breather system. The breather element mounted
to the top of the rocker cover.
Solids are separated form gasses by the breather element. Solids drain into the crankcase and
gasses are vented to the atmosphere.

Scene Number: 2076 1230 Scene Title Filter Specifications

Audio
The LF16240 lubrication oil filter on this engine has a capacity of 0.436 liters, 0.461 quarts.
Scene Number: 2076 1240 Scene Title Lubrication Flow

Audio
The following section will cover Lubrication Flow through the F2.8 liter engines.
Scene Number: Scene Title Oil Pan Flow
2076 1250
Audio
The lubricating oil flow begins in the pan where it is drawn through the cast oil pickup
channel in the bottom of the oil pan.
Scene Number: 2076 1260 Scene Title Front Gear Cover Flow

Audio
The oil from the pickup goes into the front gear cover which houses the crankshaft driven oil
pump.
Scene Number: Scene Title Oil Cooler Flow
2076 1290
Audio
From the outlet of the oil pump, the oil travels through the front gear housing, through a
drilling in the block to the oil cooler located in the oil filter module where it flows through
the eight plates in the cooler.

F2.8 Series Lubrication System
Scene Number: Scene Title Oil Filter Inlet Flow
2076 1300
Audio
From the oil cooler, the oil travels to the inlet of the oil filter.
During normal engine operation, oil circulates through the filter, and into the main oil rifle.
However, if the full flow section becomes plugged to the point that the specified oil pressure
difference exists between the filter-in and filter-out, the bypass valve opens in the oil filter
head and routes unfiltered oil to the main oil rifle to lubricate the engine.
Scene Number: Scene Title Main Oil Rifle To Piston Cooling Nozzles Flow
2076 1330
Audio
Oil travels down the main oil rifle and supplies the piston cooling nozzles. Here oil spray is
directed to the underside of the pistons to both cool the pistons and lubricate the piston pin.
Piston cooling nozzles provide greater lubrication of critical parts than splash lubrication
while improving engine performance.
Scene Number: Scene Title Main Bearings Flow
2076 1340
Audio
Oil travels to grooves around each of the main bearings of the crankshaft before it is directed
through cross drillings to the piston rod journals.
Scene Number: 2076 1410 Scene Title Main Oil Rifle To Overhead Flow

Audio
The camshaft bearings receive lubrication from the engine’s main oil rifle. A drilling in the
flywheel end of the cylinder block transfers oil to the cylinder head and then to an oil rifle
drilled through the cylinder head.
Drillings in the cylinder head intersect the oil rifle creating the final path for oil to the
camshaft bearings and the rocker pedestals.
Scene Number: 2076 1420 Scene Title Rocker Flow

Audio
Passages in the bottom of the rocker pedestal channel oil up and around the outside of the
rocker mounting bolts and to the rocker lever shafts.
At this point, the oil lubricates the rocker shaft and rocker levers, and then is transferred to
the drillings in the rocker lever.
Oil traveling through the other rocker lever drilling is directed at the rocker lever roller and
lubricates the roller and the camshaft lobes.
One drilling leads to the e-foot and provides lubrication to the e-foot, the valve crosshead,
and to the valves.

F2.8 Series Lubrication System
Scene Number: Scene Title Turbocharger Flow
2076 1425
Audio
The turbocharger is supplied oil from a special internal oil rifle in the front cover. An
external oil supply line attaches to the front cover with a banjo fitting.
Oil travels thorough an external supply line to the top of the turbocharger bearing housing.
Scene Number: Scene Title Bearing Housing
2076 1430
Audio
Oil is used to lubricate and cool the turbocharger bearings and then is returned to the engine
under gravity back into the engine oil pan sump through the turbocharger drain line.
Scene Number: 2076 1450 Scene Title Pressure Regulator Valve Flow

Audio
The pump then passes the oil through to the pressure regulator valve. The pressure regulator
directs the flow of excess oil from the oil regulator to the oil pan.
This allows the pump to bypass enough oil to regulate the oil pressure to the desired range
without too much restriction to the flow of oil. At normal operating temperature,
minimum oil pressure at low idle is 10 psi. At rated speed,
minimum pressure is 30 psi.
