Measurements
Course Code: EE209 Time: 45 minutes
Instructors: Dr. Marwa Hamed Maximum Mark: 20 Marks

Question 1 [8 Marks]:
a. Force of viscosity F acting on a spherical body moving through a fluid depends upon
its velocity (v), radius (r) and co-efficient of viscosity ‘η’ of the fluid. Using method
of dimensions to obtain an expression for ‘F’, given that η = [ M 1 L−1 T −1]
b. An ammeter has a PMMC instrument with a coil resistance of Rm = 99 Ω and FSD
current of 0.1 mA, a shunt resistance Rs = 1 Ω. Determine the total current passing
through the ammeter at (a) FSD, (b) 0.5 FSD, and (c) 0.25 FSD

Question 2 [12 Marks]:

a. Calculate the series resistance required to convert a 1 mA moving coil meter with a
100 Ω internal resistance into a 0 – 1 v voltmeter
b. Two resistors R1=140kΩ and R2=100kΩ are connected in series across 12V supply. A
voltmeter on a 10V range is connected to measure the voltage across the resistor ‘R2’.
Calculate (i) actual value of voltage across R2 , (ii) measured voltage across R2 with
voltmeter having sensitivity of 20kΩ/V , (iii) measured voltage across R2 with voltmeter
having sensitivity 200kΩ/V , (iv) % error in both the above cases What is your comment
on the result with reference to sensitivity of the voltmeters used?
