SEMESTER 2 – ACADEMIC YEAR 2020-2021

Course name: Electrical Measurement and Instruments, Course ID: EMIN330244E
Duration: 60 minutes

Question 1 (2 marks)
The output voltage of a circuit is 20.5 volts. Two students A, B measure that voltage with the values below.
First trial Second trial Third trial Fourth trial Fifth trial Sixth trial
[V] [V] [V] [V] [V] [V]
Student A 20.7 20.5 19.6 20.3 20.9 20.5
Student B 18.4 19.8 17.5 19.7 18.9 19.1
a. Explain which trial represents the value with the most accuracy?
b. Explain which student has higher precision?

Question 2 (1 marks)
Use the least square method to determine the equation of the best-fit line for the measured data of the water
consumed in a day versus temperature measurement.
Teperature [°F] 99 85 97 80 92 88 94 83
Water consumed

in a day [oz]

Question 3 (1 mark)
Determine the resistance RA in the circuit below to linearize the relation between the output voltage VOUT
and the temperature T in the range of -25°C ~ 65°C. The data of RT 102AT is shown in the below table.

Question 4 (2 marks)
Determine the necessary multiplier/shunt resistance values to make a 1.5mA (full scale) and 400Ω meter
become a Multimeter (VOM) to read exactly full-scale at an applied voltage of 500 volts, 50 volts, and
full-scale at an applied current of 50A, 10A.
This Multimeter also has an Ohmmeter function, and this Ohmmeter represents 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 of the full-
scale range value. Draw these 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 indication values of this Ohm measurement range.

This figure shows the cold junction compensation Calculate the output voltage Vout of the circuit
circuit of an E-type thermocouple with the Seebeck below, if the 500Ω variable resistor VR is set at
coefficient (thermoelectric sensitivity) of 44% of its value.
60.9µV/°C. Determine the value of VR1 for this
compensation circuit when the output voltage of
the LM35 temperature sensor is 10mV/°C.
