Gonzalez Class”
“Vocabulary Assignment”
Name: Luis Alfaro Student #: 92640596 Date: 3/11/24
Instructions: Using your dictionary and textbook answer the following definitions. Please use references or 10 points will
be deducted from your total grade. Some of this information will be used on the Vocabulary Quiz and Final Exam.

1- Mandatory Inspection
In order to verify that an aircraft is kept in an airworthy condition.

2- Green Arc
10-22 The green arc shows a normal and safe range of operation. When the markings appear on
the cover glass, a white line is used as an index mark, often called a slippage mark.

3- Annunciator lights
G-7 an annunciator light is turned on to inform the flight crew that metal particles are loose in
the lubrication system.

4- Red Line
Pg-267 A red mark on an aircraft instrument that indicates a maximum allowable operating
condition.

5- Bourdon tube
Pg-53 The mechanism in a pressure gauge consisting of a flat or elliptical cross-sectioned tube
bent into a curve or spiral.

6- Purge valve
A purge valve is an integral component of a vacuum material conveying system that not only
provides an on/off flow of material into a conveying line, but also a way to purge that conveying
line with air at the end of every material loading cycle.

7- Fuel Flow Indicator

10-58 Fuel-flow instruments indicate the fuel flow in pounds per hour (lb/hr) from the engine
fuel control.

8- Yellow arc
Pg-357 A yellow marking on an instrument that indicates a region of caution.

9- Carburetor air temperature

Pg-63 The temperature of the induction air before it enters the carburetor.

10- Federal Aviation Regulations

Pg-32 The rules, regulations, and guidelines established by the FAA to govern the operation of
aircraft, ainvays, airmen, and the safe operation official aircraft.

11- Low blade angle, high blade angle

7-6 The low blade angle keeps the AOA small and efficient with respect to the relative wind.
Aerodynamic twisting force tends to turn the blades to a high blade angle. Centrifugal twisting
force, being greater than the aerodynamic twisting force, tends to force the blades toward a low
blade angle.

12- Recording tachometer

Pg- 315 An instrument that measures the rotating speed of an engine. For reciprocating engines,
the tachometer reads in RPMs. In most turbine engines, the tachometer reads in percent of the
maximum RPM.

13- Wheatstone Bridge

is a divided bridge circuit used for the measurement of static or dynamic electrical resistance.

14- Inches of mercury

Unit used in the measurement of atmospheric pressure.

15- Ground Check

10-27 The ground check is performed to evaluate the functioning of the engine by comparing
power input, as measured by manifold pressure, with power output, as measured by rpm or
torque.

16- Static RPM

G-25 The number of revolutions per minute an aircraft engine can produce when the aircraft is
not moving.

17- Engine maintenance records

A brief description of work performed.

18- Suction gauge

Is used to monitor the vacuum developed in the system that actuates the air driven gyroscopic
flight instruments.

19- Mixture Control

G-3 The device in a fuel metering system, such as a carburetor or fuel injection system, that keeps
the fuel-air mixture ratio constant as the density of air changes with altitude

20- Propeller lever (pitch control)

Adjusts the angle or pitch of the propeller blades. This controls the engine's thrust by changing
how efficiently the propeller bites into the air.

21- Fuel Totalizer

is an estimated fuel quantity based on the pilot's entry of how much fuel is on board.

22- 100-hour or annual inspection

the federal requirement that all passenger aircraft must be inspected after every 100 hours of
flight time.

23- Thermocouple
G-27 A device used to generate an electrical current. A thermocouple is made of two dissimilar
metal wires whose ends are welded together to form a loop.
24- Hot junction
9-1 The point where these metals are joined and exposed to the heat of a fire is called a hot
junction. There is also a reference junction enclosed in a dead air space between two insulation
blocks.

25- Compression test

10-10 The spring is compressed until its total height is that specified by the manufacturer.
