Site Context
VIPA Farm House is situated in a village called Athur, 28 kms away from Chennai. The east-facing site

Filler Slab Ceiling in the Living Area Foldable Shutter in the Courtyard
A Dual Courtyard
Design Concept
Inspired by the clients’ deep rememberance of their childhood, the house is accurately designed
to reflect the concept of going back to the roots. Every material used in this project is handpicked
to deliver the same essence. Zoning of the spaces within the house is also a thoughtful process,
ensuring seamless connection. It helps in maintaining a natural flow throughout the house, dividing
the courtyard into two parts.

Entrance Porch
The entrance of the house is covered with a cantilevered slab which provides ample protection
from the sun, while letting in the breeze. Flanked by landscape on either side, a set of cascading
steps welcomes one inside the house. The porch has a brick feature wall, breaking the pattern of the
monotonous arrangement of the bricks.

Living Area
Living Area
Overlooking the courtyard is the main living room of the house. On entering the space, one is
greeted with a filler slab ceiling and oxide flooring with glass inlay. Placed in the north along with
the kitchen, the living room has furniture made out of reclaimed wood, sourced from different parts
of Tamil Nadu.
Living Courtyard
The living courtyard is the heart of the house along the east-west direction, connecting one end
of the house with another through a passage. The idea behind having two courtyards was to have
more place and flexibiity in terms of usage. The living courtyard has a 80-year old Chinese ficus at
the centre, providing an instant connect with nature. The foldable shutters at the end extends the
courtyard even further to the lawn outside.

Kitchen Courtyard
On the other side of the dining passage is the secound courtyard. The kitchen courtyard has
a parametric brick wall, breaking the monotony of the regular arrangement of the bricks. The
projection and recession of the bricks creates a wave like pattern with varying light and shadow
pattern throughout the day. These courtyards help in maintaining the temperature of the house by
regulating an active airflow.

Dining Passage
Dining Area
The entry to the dining area is through a 9-feet wooden and glass door. The dining being set in
the middle of the two courtyards is purposefully made to be understated in order to blend with its
surroundings. The flooring of the dining passage is of grey oxide along with Athangudi tiles sourced
from Karaikudi. The courtyards on both the sides of the passage have metal grill, providing an
interesting play of light and shadow throughout the day, apart from providing safety.

Master Bedroom
Master Bedroom
The rear end of the house has two rooms connected to the front end through a passage. The master
bedroom has a bay window overlooking the green at the back of the plot, making for a cosy book
reading corner within the room. The room has wardrobes and bed treated with wood and cane to
bring in enough warmth and texture to the space. Attached to the room is a walk-in closet area and
a bathroom.

Guest Bedroom
Positioned adjacent to the master bedroom is the guest bedroom. The entry passage has a long
solid wood and cane wardrobe, which has been made light by sandwiching cane between glass. The
wardrobe is connected to a long table. The window of the room overlooks the lawn on the ouside
of the house.

Conclusion
The design of VIPA Farm House works incredibly well due to its seamless integration of
architectural elements with the nature. The house establishes a symbiotic relationship between
the external environment, the built form and the interior spaces. The farm house is surrounded
by landscape, while getting a proper view of the entry and exit of the site. The material palette of
the house is minimal, consisting of exposed brick, cement plaster and oxide flooring. Overall, the
design successfully creates a harmonious and inspiring living environment that celebrates both
reminiscence of childhood and nature.
