The Man behind Siargao’s
Discovery
Now known as one of the
top surfing destinations in the Philippines,
Siargao Island is found west of Surigao del
Norte (800 km from Manila). The history of
Siargao is relatively short from a tourism
perspective, but the region is steeped in
history.
Surfing is the main attraction in Siargao. It
all started way back in 1980 when two
foreigners, Tony Arruza and Steve Jones,
came to the island during their search for the
“perfect wave.
At that time, Siargao hadn’t become a
popular tourist distination yet. Finally, it was
in the year 1992 that Siargao hit the maps.
A famous surfing photographer named John
Callahan took pictures which featured
famous surfers John Slater, Taylor Knox,
and Kevin Davidson riding the huge waves
in Cloud 9. The story was published in a
magazine that circulated all over the world.

Siargao, a small and unassuming island off the coast
of Surigao del Norte, is one of Mindanao’s prized
destinations. Famed for its surfing spot named “Cloud
9”, the island is increasingly becoming popular to local
and foreign tourists, surfers and non-surfers alike.
Siargao Island is the biggest landmass in the island
group of the same name. The entire island group is
composed of e municipalities including Socorro,
where Bucas Grande Islands or Sohoton Cove is
located. The other eight municipalities are located in
mainland Siargao.
Surigao to Siargao
fly to Surigao City and take the
ferry to Siargao Island
from Surigao Port. This is a
considerably cheaper route than
flying directly to Siargao from
Cebu. You can fly
to Surigao Airport from
Mactan-Cebu airport, and then
catch a ferry heading to Siargao at
the Surigao Port
The travel
timbetween Siargao and Surigao is
1.5 hours for the fast ferry and 3
hours for the RoRo service.

Siargao is an island of nine municipalities in the province
of Surigao del Norte. Known as the “Surfing Capital of
the Philippines”, Siargao is mainly responsible for
introducing surfing to the country. Apart from surfing,
Siargao is also open to other activities such as cave
explorations and rock climbing.
