Content Standard Addressed: SS5H6: Describe the importance of key people, events, and
developments between 1950-1975.
b) Explain the key events and people of the Civil Rights movement: Brown v. Board of
Education (1954), Montgomery Bus Boycott, The March on Washington, Civil Rights Act,
Voting Rights Act, and civil rights activities of Thurgood Marshall, Lyndon B. Johnson, Cesar
Chavez, Rosa Parks, and Martin Luther King Jr.

The student learning goal is for students to be able to describe and explain the key events
and people that corresponds with the Civil Rights movement. Students will need to be able
to gather information and provide artifacts.

Description of Software: Flipgrid Video is a website that teachers can use to create “grids” to
help create video discussions to help students communicate with each other and the
teacher.

Lesson idea implementation:
Before I start the lesson, I will ask the students what they know about the people associated
with the Civil Rights Movement and any important events. When it’s time to start the lesson I
will give my students a K-W-L chart and they will talk to their elbow partner to complete the
chart. By allowing the students to complete the chart, I will be able to determine what the
students already know, what they want to know and then at the end of the lesson they will
write down what they learned. The students will create a video that will explain what they
learned from the BrainPOP and what they already know about the Civil Rights Movement.
Managing student learning:
This lesson manages student’s learning because they will stay engaged by talking to their
elbow partners and filling out the K-W-L chart given by me. I can also find students a fun
BrainPOP over the Civil Rights movement, and at the end of the video I will give the
students a quiz and I will give them a time to complete their Flipgrid video from what they
learned from the BrainPOP and my lesson. I will set the Flipgrid feature to be a video
discussions that will be over 2-3 questions I create.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Reflection: Be sure to mention one specific UDL principle you
are focused on in this lesson – Multiple Means of Engagement, Multiple Means of Representation,
or Multiple Means of Action & Expression.
This lesson will help students stay engaged in the current learning content because Flipgrid
and BrainPOP allows students to manage their own learning/student progress. The students
can manage their own learning because they can answer the questions in their own words
and then post it to the current discussion posts.
Reflection:
I wholeheartedly believe that this tool and lesson can help students create a meaningful and
comfortable online learning environment because the students are in control of the own
progress and learning with the help of the teacher. I look forward in seeing how
implementing this lesson and tool enhance each student’s learning of the Civil Rights
Movement.
