Universal Coupling
Instructions: If no indication is provided in the problem/views, assume the third angle projection
system for drawing. Consider all dimensions in mm. Any missing data may be assumed suitably.

(A) Description of device

Universal coupling (also called Universal joint, Hooke’s joint, Cardan joint) is used for
connecting shafts in many applications, where axes of shafts are inclined at an angle to each
other. It compensates angular misalignment between the shafts in any direction. It consists of a
pair of hinges located close together, oriented at 900 to each other, connected by a cross shaft.
The universal coupling suffers from one major problem i.e. even when the input drive shaft axle
rotates at a constant speed, the output drive shaft axle rotates at a variable speed, thus causing
vibration and wear. The two fork ends are assembled co-axially with respect to centre block.
The pins are assembled into the holes provided in the fork end. These pins are held in position
by means of collars and collar pins. The assembled and exploded views of a typical universal
coupling (adopted from internet) are shown in Figs.1(a) and 1(b) for bring clarity to students.
