EET 3209: WORKSHOP PRACTICE


DATE: JANUARY 2022 TIME: 2 HOURS

INSTRUCTIONS:
This paper consists of five questions
Answer question one and any other two questions.

QUESTION ONE (30 MARKS)


a) (i) State any two safety rules applied in an engineering workshop
(ii) Analyse the aims of Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 as applied to workshop safety
(iii) List any two causes of accidents in the workshop (6 marks)
b) (i) State the main reasons for marking-out engineering components before working on them
(ii) Under what circumstance would it be appropriate to use a folding machine rather than a
vice when bending metal sheet (5 marks)
c) The following are some of the tools used in the workshop. Give the purpose of each of them
(4 marks)
i. Hand drill
ii. Chisel
iii. Engineer’s file

d) (i) Distinguish between electrical symbols and accessories and state their main uses in
electrical design work

(ii) State two advantages of a miniature circuit breaker over cartridge fuse as applied in over
current protection

(iii) Draw a complete wiring circuit diagram of two lighting points controlled independently
from two positions using one gang two-ways 5A single pole switches connected through a
30A junction box

e) Explain the important of earthing an electrical installation

Explain the main differences between inspection and testing of a newly completed electrical
installation giving appropriate examples (6 marks)

QUESTION TWO (15 MARKS)

a) Distinguish between the I.E.E. regulations and workshop safety rules

State any TWO responsibilities of employers to ensure health and safety in their
organizations (4 marks)

b) Explain the applications of following electric portable tools and give the advantages of each
over mechanical hand tools: (6 marks)

(i) Band saw

(ii) Grinder

c) With reference to bench marking -out of engineering components discuss the importance of
the following functions: (5 marks)

(i) Datum

(ii) Co-ordinates

QUESTION THREE (15 MARKS)


a) Draw the following basic mechanical hand tools and state their functions:
i. Engineer’s flat file
ii. Scriber
iii. Hacksaw
b) Distinguish between the following method of joining sheet metal parts:
(i) Mechanical fastening and adhesive bonding
(ii) Welding and brazing (4 marks)

c) Explain how electrical cable joints are effectively soldered and state any TWO I.E.E.
regulations that are observed (5 marks)

QUESTION FOUR (15 MARKS)


a) (i) State any TWO factors that determine the choice of wiring systems
(ii) With reference to electrical accessories state the application of the following:
i. Lamp holders
ii. Metallic switches
iii. 13A switched socket-outlet (5 marks)
b) (i) Draw a complete wiring circuit diagram of parallel and series lighting system controlled
independently from three position through intermediate switching system and mini-trunking
systems
(ii) State, in sequence, the tests which should be carried out in (i) (10 marks)

QUESTION FIVE (15 MARKS)


a) With the aid of labeled diagrams explain the principles of operation of the following
overcurrent protection devices: (6 marks)
a. Cartridge fuse
b. Thermal-magnetic controlled miniature circuit breaker
b) Draw a suitable diagram of Protective Multiple Earthing systems and state any TWO
conditions of this system that are observed to make them effective (4 marks)
c) With the aid of a labeled circuit diagram explain the operation of a single-stroke electric bell
(5 marks)
