HWU OPERATIONS MANUAL
The Joeny Hydraulic Work-over (HWO) units are self-contained, portable, running and
pulling systems that provide an economical means of performing routine well maintenance for
land, inland waters and offshore installations.
Our HWO units are designed to be rigged up quickly and can be mounted on any of the
wellheads, allowing push/pull forces to be transmitted through the structure to the wellhead. All
the components are compact and unitized to minimize rig-up time.
Basically, Hydraulic Workover Operation (HWO) activities have been arbitrarily broken
down and listed under simple sections with contingencies out of the basic operations generally
outlined for clarity to crew members and other users of this manual. Crew members here refer
to all personnel involved in the HWO operations as attached to the unit which must include:
The Supervisor
The basket crew (Jack Operator, the Counter balance operator and the tong operator),
Senior field Engineer & Field Engineers
Deck coordinator
Maintenance team (Mechanic and Electrician)
Pumping Crew (Pump Operator and Assistant Pump Operator)
Lifting Crew (Crane operator, crane mate and forklift operator)
Barge-master & assistant (Swamp operations)
QHSE Officer/Clerk and SSEs as may be defined in the Company’s “SHORT SERVICE
EMPLOYEE (SSE) & POB MANAGEMENT PROCESS PROCEDURE” – (HSE- TOS-
SMP- SOP-031)
All operations considered in this manual are on initially dead wells, live wells that must
be confirmed killed prior to operations and all other well intervention operations that restore or
optimize productions.

HWU OPERATIONS MANUAL
Detailed work-over program as provided are studied by the Rig Manager with his/her team
ensuring that all steps are well understood
Identify the environment based on Onshore or Offshore
The team review the stages, identifying all the equipment needed to deliver the wells
Any concerns (both safety & otherwise) raised by the team are referred to the GM Operations
& such are discussed with the client for proper clarification
During workover operations, it becomes necessary at times to perform rig work, such as
fishing or others, that requires rig equipment to be operated near the designed limit. If this
limit is exceeded, then the equipment is likely to fail thus causing financial loss and delays in
the workover operations. It is common practice to review the HWOP equipment
specifications in order to operate within its capabilities and limitations.
♦ HWU equipment
♦ Power Packs
♦ BOP equipment
♦ Safety Equipment
Important information about a HWU is the depth limitation or capacity. Every piece of
equipment has a maximum operating limit before failure occurs. In the case of the HWU depth
limitation, it is based on the load the Hydraulic Jack can sustain during operations. The limit is
calculated based on the drill pipe size (and weight) to be run, additional equipment on the drill
pipe, and the amount of over-pull which might be needed.

Prior to mud mixing, the correct PPEs must be worn & the agitator switched on even as the
Mud engineer provide the details of the mixing with regards to weight as calculated.
The chemicals are mixed in the flow-back tank in proper supervision of the Mud Engineer
The properly mixed chemicals are circulated in closed circuit system & is made up to required
volume
As the weight and volume needed is achieved, the mud (brine) is circulated for proper mixing
The mud is then passed thru Filtration unit for proper filtering of any cakes
On achieving proper mixing & filtering, the fluid is kept in circulation awaiting well kill

Prior to tubular run, the specification data sheet should be provided & followed with the
detailed knowledge of Make-up & Break-out torques. The bundled tubulars are racked & tallied
based on operations & pre-determined depth. Some of the BHAs like the drill bit with minimal

All the valves leading to the Degasser passing by the choke (downstream valves) have to be
in open positions.
Beside these valves, all other valves have to be in closed position.
If there is any kick indication, stop tripping immediately, stop F/U w/trip tank and flow check &
record pit volume.
Install the FOSV in open position and close the valve once is installed (Jack operator/basket
crew)
Open choke line valve at BOP stack (HCR valve) (SFE)
Make up circulating head on string then open the FOSV (Jack operator/basket crew)
Continue reading and recording pressures in intervals. Don’t allow SICP to exceed MAASP.
The senior field Engineer on board has the sole responsibility to read and record pressures,
time and report situation to DSV/TP
Decision to start killing procedures or to strip back to the bottom depends on situation.
Reduce the annular pressure and start stripping the string to the bottom
Run back in hole controlling the volumes, if any anomalies are noticed then proceed to the
stripping. Once on bottom, circulate annular volume and evaluate the situation.
If the Clients decides that we use hard shut-in then the following needs to be followed:
If there is any kick indication, stop tripping immediately and flow check
Install the FOSV in open position and close the valve once is installed (Jack operator/basket
crew)
Do not allow Shut-In Casing Pressure to exceed Maximum Allowable Annular Surface
Pressure (MAASP).
Close the blind Ram. Do not close Annular against open hole.
Read and record the SICP. SIDPP cannot be read since no pipe in hole.
Do not allow the SICP to exceed Maximum Allowable Surface Pressure. Call DSV/TP.

Stripping Calculations
SICP = Known from shut-in & read from the Casing Pressure Gauge on Choke remote panel
Influx Volume = Initial Pit Gain & read from the Trip Tank before shutting in (V inf)
NB: Convenient values for PSTEP is between 50 – 150psi based on the scale
division available on the pressure gauge
Influx Volume (bbl) is obtained as Initial Pit Gain from the Trip Tank
NB: Top of Gas Kick (ft.) = Hole TD – Kick Height (Before migration)
Determine the Volume of Mud in the Open Hole/Drill collar Annulus (VSTEP) or
Mud Increment corresponding to the Hydrostatic of the PSTEP
Allowance for loss of Hydrostatic as the influx rises from below the bit to
around the drill collars/ Safety Factor (PSF)
