HOT POTATO SPELLING GAME!


MATERIALS:
> A small ball or an object easy to grab, catch, and throw.
> Flashcards of the vocabulary (fantastic, February, finally, first,
Friday, friend, grandmother, graphic, Halloween, head).

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. The teacher will pick up one flashcard and will place it on the
board (e.g. the flashcard for “first”).
3. By turns, everyone will help the teacher to spell the word.
4. The teacher will have the ball and will say the first letter of the
word (e.g. f).
5. The teacher will throw the ball. The student who grabs it will say
the next letter of the word (e.g. i).
6. The student will throw the ball to a classmate. This classmate will
say the next letter of the word (e.g. r).
7. Repeat it! After saying the letter, you have to throw the ball, and
someone has to catch it.
8. After students finish spelling all the word, the teacher will write it on
the board.
9. Spell it all together!
10. You can repeat the game with different words.

Spelling Wheel

1. Students will get together in teams of 4 or 5.

2. Each team will make a circle and sit on the floor.

3. Third, they will place the wheel in the middle of the


circle.

4. Then, students will take turns to participate in the


activity.

5. Each student's turn will spin the pencil as shown below.


The tip will point the word that will be spelled.

6. The student will have 30 seconds to spell the word.

7. Next student to participate will have to perform steps 5


and 6.

Jigsaw Words

1. Divide the class in teams.

2. Give turns of participations. 2 or 3 members of the same


team will participate per round.

3. The three students will receive a strip of paper (provided in


the next page) with the same word, but each missing different
letters. The three will have to communicate in English to
complete the word, without looking at each other´s
incomplete words.

4. Decide on a time limit to complete the words. It could be 1


minute per round/word.

5. At the end the teacher can reward students who manage


to complete their words with participation points.

Spelling Race
T. Puts three lists separately on the wall behind students. The
lists have spelling words in different order each one.

Teacher divides the group by rows (up to 3 teams).

Ss choose the color of the marker with which their team will
work (options: green, black, blue, red).

The board will be divided in 3 parts, 1 for each team.

T gives the instruction to start.

The first student of each team will run to the wall to see the first
Word, then run to the board and write the number and the
Word. When the student finishes, he/she will give the marker to
the second particiant of the team, and so on.

When a team finishes to write all the words from the list, Ss
shout out “STOP”, so the others shouldn´t write anything else.

The winning team will be the one who has spelled the most
words correctly.

Broken Phone

1. Divide the class in teams. The teacher decides how many


teams he/she will form and divide the board. Each team will
be given one part of the board.

2. Teams will form rows.

3. The Last student of each row will get a strip of paper with a
word.

4. The last student of the rows will tell the word he/she reads to
the person in front of him/her.

5. Each student will tell the word to the person in front of


him/her.

6. When the first person, the one closest to the board, hears
the word, he/she will rush to the part of the board given to
his/her team and write such word.

7. Then, the first person of each team will go to the back of the
classroom and be the last person of his/her row.

8. First team to finish writing all its words shouts stop so no other
team can keep writing. The teacher counts how many words
each team got right to see who wins.

Teacher’s guide:

- Each student (player 1 and player 2) will have a chart with letters
and numbers in the front part of the paper. (charts are provided

- On the back of the paper they will have lines where they will write
the words.
- Students will choose a random word from the options.*
- A player will spell the choosen word to the opposite player for
them to mark with a dot the letters according to the order. Each
