CHAPTER I

Introduction
Artificial intelligence (AI) has been more widely used in education in recent years,
completely changing how students interact, study, and engage with academic material.
Students at all educational levels are experiencing a significant shift in their reliance on artificial
intelligence technology to assist them in their academic work from different artificial intelligence
platforms. Students heavily rely on AI-powered tools and platforms for academic support, such
as essay writing tools, plagiarism detection software, and virtual tutors, which offer instant
feedback, personalized learning experiences, and access to extensive educational resources,
this can harm their academic performance as they lack the necessary skills to tackle more
advanced challenges. According to Britannica, Artificial intelligence (AI), the ability of a digital
computer or computer-controlled robot to perform tasks commonly associated with intelligent
beings. The term is frequently applied to the project of developing systems endowed with the
intellectual processes characteristic of humans, such as the ability to reason, discover meaning,
generalize, or learn from experience. It simulates human intelligence behaviors and trains
computers to learn human behaviors such as learning, judgment, and decision-making. Artificial
Intelligence is a knowledge project that takes knowledge as the object, acquires knowledge,
analyzes, and studies the expression methods of knowledge, and employs these approaches to
achieve the effect of simulating human intellectual activities. (Zhang & Lu, 2021). Furthermore,
AI tools like chatbots and expert systems provide students with real-time support and problem-
solving assistance in a variety of academic subjects, helping them to overcome challenges and
improve their problem-solving abilities. For example, when students use chatbots to complete
homework assignments, they may not have the opportunity to develop problem-solving skills,
leading to a dependency on AI-powered solutions. (The Saint Anselm Crier, 2023). The use of
artificial intelligence (AI) tools like ChatGPT to complete school assignments and exams is
becoming increasingly common among students, with some educators expressing concern
about the impact on education and critical thinking. (Tech Business News, 2023). This research
seeks to understand perceptions by examining how students perceive and conceptualize
artificial intelligence, encompassing their awareness, attitudes, and beliefs regarding its
capabilities and limitations. The researchers will explore the usage patterns, which entail
examining the extent to which students integrate artificial intelligence technologies into their
academic and personal lives, including specific applications and frequency of use, and identify
the dependency factors. This involves exploring the various influences shaping students’
reliance on artificial intelligence, ranging from convenience and efficiency to social norms, peer
influence, and perceived benefits. This research aims to investigate how dependency on
artificial intelligence affects students’ academic performance, critical thinking skills, creativity,
and their ability to engage in self-directed learning, providing insights into the broader
implications of artificial intelligence AI integration in education.
