FREAHILD

Hello! In this guide I’ll be painting Frea-

hild from the Spreading War expan-
sion to The Lord of the Rings: Journeys
in Middle-earth!

As usual I’ve primed the miniature in

black followed with some grey and
white zenithal highlights applied from
above:

I’ve also applied some basing paste I’m beginning by painting the eyes using Nacar (any off white would do)
and cork rocks: then painting the surrounding area with some Black:

I’m now providing the skin with a

And here I’ve placed the pupils: dark base tone using Burnt Sienna
Umber:
Next I’m painting the hair simply us-
ing Wyldwood:

I’m then creating a skin tone gradi-

ent by mixing some Pink Flesh and
Golden Flesh into the Burnt Sienna
Umber:

I’m then using this gradient to high-

light the skin:
I’m aiming to stretch out the shadow to mid tones, but not hold back on Here I’m adding some Primary Red
some sharp, bright highlights: to create a lip tone:

And I’m adding Vanilla White to cre-

ate a highlight tone for the lower
lip:
I’m also using Vanilla White to in-
crease the value of the general skin
highlights:

I’ve now chosen to glaze some

Orange into the mid tones to add
some richness:

And I’m freely alternating between

adjusting the highlights and in-
creasing the levels of orange:
Moving on to the cloak, I’m using a
I’m first mixing my Black Forest
mix of Black Forest Green and Abys- And I’m now adding some of this to
Green and Abyssal Blue (roughly
sal Blue for the shadows, and Field the Field Gray to create a mid tone:
equally):
Gray for the highlights.
I’m then using the gradeint to block in the values, starting with the shad-

ow tone:

As usual, we may need to apply a

coverage:

It’s then a question of refining I also find using a series of short,

the transitions using intermediate horizontal strokes helps create a
tones: more pleasing look:
Finally, I’ve decided to add some
Birch to the Field Gray for my bright-
est highlights:
Here I decided to stray from the
character art, and paint the legs in
the same way to help break up the
areas of brown:

For all of the leather areas I’m go-

ing to freely mix some Wyldwood
and Skeleton Horde on the model:

I’m roughly placing the Wyldwood

more into the areas of shadow,
then wet blending in some Skele-
ton Horde for the rest:
I’m also using this for the wooden
parts of the shield:

To create a little variety I then de-

cided to tint the padded tunic using
Darkoath Flesh, producing a slight-
ly more orangy tone:
And I’m now applying some ultra
matte varnish to take the shine off
the Contrast Colour:

Next I’m creating a simple gradi- And I’m using this to paint the
ent using Abyssal Blue and White metallic parts of the shield, NMM
Sands: style...
I’m also using this for the short
sword:

As well as the buckles on the tunic:

This is a very simple colour combination but works well for quick NMM
effects like this:
To create some further contrast of This looks quite attractive when
colour temperature I’ve decided to placed into some of the shadows
apply some thinned Orange Leath- such as here on the underside of
er: the shield rim:

And I’m continuing to add some

additional glinting highlights (up to
pure White Sands):
I’m now returning to the leather,
I’m applying this mainly to the belt
where I’m using Iroko to add some
using a series of short strokes:
cracked texture and highlights:

We can also add some White Sands

to create some brighter points:
Here I’m adding some Iroko to
And I’m now brushing over some
I added one or two highlights else- the Burnt Sienna Umber to create
Skeleton Horde to help integrate
where, too: a slightly darker tone to pick out
things a little:
some of the grain on the shield:

And here I’m adding a few final highlights to the padded tunic, once again
using Iroko:
I’m now painting the cork rocks in grey, providing a dry brush of White Sands, and providing a wash of Agrax
Earthshade:

And I’m adding a few final highlights

I’m then glueing down some grass tufts and a few leaves:
to the metal parts of the shield:
And this completes Freahild!
