COCKROACH QUEEN

Hello! In this guide I’ll be painting the Cockroach Queen narrative sculpt from Kingdom Death: Monster:

I first primed the model in black followed with some zenithal highlights. I began by dotting in the whites of
I also brought up the values for the lantern using pure white: the left eye using Vanilla White:

For the skin I’m using Pink Flesh mixed with a little Dark Prussian Blue
and a touch of Black to create a somewhat cool, desaturated tone:
Notice I’ve left some dark lining For the skin highlight tone I’m using Light Skin mixed with a little Tur-
around the eyes: quoise Blue:

I’m now adding this to the base

tone in small increments:

I don’t want to go too bright here but would like a gentle luminescence:
I’m now mixing some Purple with a litte Black, and using this for the lips:

I’m now lightening the tone with

some Vanilla White, and adding a

highlight to the lower lip:

Next I’m painting the hair using Black mixed with Dark Prussian Blue. I’ll
then be adding White and some Turquoise Blue for the highlights:
I’ve thinned the paint enough to

I’m now adding my White and Tur-

quoise Blue, and applying some We can initially use the side of the brush to more easily pick out the tex-

more thick and opaque:

I’m now focusing on individual

strands of the texture as the tone
gets lighter:
We can go pretty bright for the
lightest highlights:

I’m now just painting the hands using the same tones used for the face:

And I’ve only just noticed the lan-

tern on the ground, so I’ve given it Next I’m painting the upper arms and the left thigh with the same blue-
a quick blast of white with the air- black tone we used for the hair:

Next I’m going to mix a purple tone
And here I’ve added some White

For the fur I’ve chosen Titanium

brown-ish grey colour:
And as we get nearer to the lantern
at the front I’m thinning the paint
I’m starting at the back:
even further to create some OSL
values:

For the armour I’ve added some of

my purple tone to the blue-black
hair colour:

I’m applying this somewhat thinned in a single layer to allow some of the
underlying values to show through:
Here I’ve just painted the skull with For the weapons and chains I’m using a thinned mix of Titanium Grey and
the Titanium Grey: Dark Prussian Blue:
And once again I’ve thinned the

paint right down to create some

OSL values near the lantern:

For the cockroaches I’m using Burnt

Sienna darkened with various tones
from the palette:

I’m now painting the frames of the lanterns using a dark grey (the same
tone I used for the weapons but thicker):
Next I’m painting the panes of the I’m starting with a light mix of
lanterns using the following tones: White and Intense Yellow:

I’m then increasing the amount of

yellow towards the top:

And here I’m adding a litte of the

Orange to complete my gradient:
I’m now going to provide some OSL highlights to the fur using Buff mixed
with a little White and Yellow:

And as I get a little further from the

lantern I’m adding a hint of orange:

These tones can also be used cre- For my initial highlights on the belt
ate some OSL on the ground near I’m adding some Vanilla White to
the second lantern: the purple base tone:
I’m also highlighting the patch of
thigh by adding a little Vanilla White
to the base tone:

I’m now continuing with the highlights on the purple areas, but increasing
the amount of blue in the mix for the general “zenithal” highlights:

And for the brighter highlights I’m

also adding a little Turquoise Blue:
I’m now highlighting the armour
once again by adding Vanilla White
to the base tone:

Naturally I’m going quite a lot

brighter here as we’re rendering a
metallic surface:
We can also add some quite dense glints of the White and Yellow lantern
colour to certain points that might catch the light from the lantern:

I’m now moving onto the leg ar-

mour, where I’m starting with some
quite bold, dense OSL highlights:

And for the highlights that aren’t

produced by light from the lantern I’m once again turning the OSL
we can push the levels of blue/tur- highlights a bit more orange the

Next I’m highlighting the skull by

Grey base tone:

Moving onto the chains and weap-

ons, I’m once again adding Vanilla
White to the base tone, and freely
increasing the levels of blue to my
liking:
I want to ensure that I hit each little I freely improvised with my colours for the blades, adding a little purple in
link in the chain: places, and elswhere pushing the blues and turqoise...

Here you can see I’ve added orange

OSL glints to one side of the hang-
ing chain:
I went back and forth a bit trying different things out on the blades...

I’m now mixing some Ivory and Tur-

quoise Blue into the Titanium Grey
to provide a few non-OSL highlights
for the fur:

And here I decided to turn the cock-

roackes a bit more purple by giving
them all a coat of Druchii Violet:
In hindsight this part would have I’m now using the same tone I
been a lot easier to paint if I hadn’t mixed for the fur to highlight some
glued it down...! of the stone faces:

And here I’ve incorporated some of

the Turquoise Blue:

I’ve just noticed the skull lurking at the back here...

And we can use the same pale skin

Naturally I’m adding some yellow I’m now just adding my last few
for this one near the lantern: highlights:

And this completes the Cockroach

Queen!
