COURSE CODE: BIOL 151 (CELL STRUCTURE). PROGRAME: BSc. NURSING. DATE: 14TH FEBUARY,2023. ASSIGNMENT GIVE 10 DIFFERNCES AND SIMILARITIES BETWEEN EUKARYOTIC CELLS AND PROKARYOTIC CELLS. I. DIFFERENCES BETWEEN PROKARYOTIC CELLS AND EUKARYOTIC CELLS PROKAYOTIC CELLS EUKARYOTIC CELLS
Nucleus is absent but they They possess nucleus
have nucleoid region in the cell They are unicellular They are mostly multicellular Has a circular DNA Has a linear DNA arrangement arrangement Lysosomes and centrioles are Lysosomes and centrioles are absent present Endoplasmic reticulum absent Endoplasmic reticulum present Plasmids are present Plasmids are very rare to find Mitochondrion absent Mitochondrion present Ranges in size from 0.2µm- Ranges in size from 10µm- 2.0µm 100µm Golgi apparatus absent Golgi apparatus present Small ribosomes Large ribosomes No membrane bound cell Membrane bound cell organelles organelles
II. SIMILARITIES BETWEEN EUKARYOTIC AND PROKARYOTIC
CELLS 1. In both cell types, cell wall is present (with some exceptions the animal cell where cell wall is absent). 2. Both cells are enclosed by plasma membrane filled with cytoplasm. 3. In both cell types the major bio molecules are carbohydrates, proteins, nucleic acid and lipids. 4. Both cells have vacuoles for storage of food and liquids 5. Both cells have deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) as their genetic material. 6. Both cells have ribosomes involved in the protein synthesis. 7. Both cells contain vesicles 8. They possess cytoskeleton to support them 9. Metabolic pathways like glycolysis are common in both cells 10. Both cells carry on the necessary life fuctions.ie growth, excretion, Irritability etc.
