CHAPTER 1

Introduction

Working is when an individual is able to perform a task and gets

compensated for it. A working student is someone who supports themselves and

strives hard to attain certain things in life like education and basic needs. There

are also various forms of working students; they could be crew workers from a

fast-food chain, an online seller that sells clothes, or part-time babysitters.

Working students suffer sleep deprivation and cannot be able to live the lifestyle

of a normal student, since they need to work hard in order for them to achieve a

milestone for themselves. Being a working student is a challenge, doing your

best in academics and work requires a lot of energy. Although there are various

reasons why a person chooses to work while studying, surely, we can't deny that

one of the reasons behind it is financial problems. Other than that, being a

working student causes them stress and having lessened time with their family

and their selves. Despite the circumstances that a working student may

encounter, still there are capable students that can work and study at the same

time.

Many students are capable of working and keeping their grades balanced.

There are many potential jobs that would work for their financial needs and their

overall performance in school, and most of the students work for their living and

their tuition. Moreover, this will also affect the student’s lifestyle as long as he or

1
she continues to be involved in a part-time job and any other working pattern.

According to surveys conducted by the Organization for Economic Co-operation

and Development (OECD, 2012), an average number of students are employed.

The Netherlands leads the world followed by Australia and Italy ranks last on the

list. Students who study internationally will struggle because of the new

environmental atmosphere in their surroundings, because of this students will get

confused or get into trouble if this is still new to them and they are not used to it

(Sawir, et al. 2008). International students pressured by finances has been a

problem for them to face, especially when they are the only ones to pay tuition

because of no financial aid to support them (Fangfang Gao, 2008).

In the Philippines, student employment is a highly widespread practice. It

is not surprising to discover working students in a classroom, especially in

universities and even among senior high school students, given that a sizeable

fraction of the student population works part-time. In addition to typical positions

like student assistants, they find employment in a number of businesses,

primarily in the food service, sales, and entertainment sectors. Many college

students attempt to balance employment and a lot of problems arise for them as

a result of their inability to afford an education. The challenges and difficulties

faced by part-time working students who strive to balance their studies and part-

time employment include time management issues, poor academic performance,

health issues, and personal and social problems. The distinction between

students who are employed is still on the rise, particularly in the Philippines.

Furthermore, According to the Commission on Higher Education (CHED, 2010)

2
estimates that roughly 216,000 students in the nation are currently balancing

employment and study. The percentage represents around 8% of all college

students. Some pupils choose careers in which they are really interested. Being

a working student can be stressful and distracting from one's studies, but it also

has benefits.

Being a working student may seem beneficial to most people, but there

are actually problems working students encounter. Students should spend their

time learning, handling class responsibilities, and achieving milestones in life, but

that can’t be ignored some students don’t have what they need to live a normal

student lifestyle. Today, normalizing the idea of students working, and think that

it’s for the better, as working would mean learning to be responsible financially

and be independent from parents. However, there are a few problems students

have to deal with while working: they may be lacking sleep, cannot keep up with

their peers, have no time to be social and participate in other activities at school,

and it may also be stressful as it is not easy to be a student and an employee all

at once.

According to responses from working students in Mindanao, working

while enrolled in school had an impact on their emotional as well as physical

health, according to a study by Balacuit and Lopio from Northern Mindanao

State University in 2022. Student No. 5 mentioned that sometimes they have

headaches thinking about their studies while at the same time dealing with

customers. Student No. 8 also stated that working as a student affected their

3
studies and developed an unstable lifestyle; they said, "Once I finish school for

the day, I have to go to work after, and when I’m done with work, I go to school."

"I'm so tired and sleepy." Because of that, they have trouble keeping up with their

studies and performing the basic necessities of life; they can’t even socialize.

Another student also said that they had no choice but to deal with these kinds of

problems (that working students encounter) as they were financially unstable and

had parents who were in medical need, so they applied for a job to pursue their

college education.

Purpose of the Study

This phenomenological, qualitative study aims to understand the lived

experiences of the selected senior high school students. In this study, the

researchers want to gather information from the participants about their struggles

as senior high school working students, as well as the opportunities they get as

working students. Knowing their motives for becoming working students is one of

the reasons why the researchers conducted this study. This study attempts to

identify the challenges and the advantages of the senior high school working

students in order to completely comprehend and assist others in learning about

the lived experiences of the selected senior high school working students. The

researchers are confident that the following will benefit from this study: teachers,

students, parents, and future researchers.

4
Future researchers, parents, teachers, and kids will all gain from this

study, the researcher is certain.

Teacher: This study will provide the teacher with knowledge that will help

them respect their students.

Student. Since this research will clarify any queries that students may

have about working students, they can benefit from it.

Parents. Parents will benefit from this research because they will be

aware of the experiences their children have had in favor of it.

Future Researchers. Future researchers will benefit from this study since

it will act as a foundation for subsequent research.

Research Objectives

This study seeks to understand the life experiences of working students. It

specifically aims:

• To explore the lived experiences of the selected senior high school

working students;

5
• To determine the challenges of the selected senior high school working

students; and

• To draw out insight about the lived experiences of the selected senior

high school working students.

This chapter focuses on ideas, approaches, theories, that serves as the

foundation for evaluating the study's worth given that it's pertinent to and is

similar to the current study.

Experiences of Working Students

According to Graham Bradley (2006). Increasing numbers of full ‐time

university students mix their studies with paid employment. The current research

examined the nature, extent, and correlates of paid work amongst a sample of

246 university students. Approximately 85% of the sample reported having a paid

job during the semester, a figure that exceeds that found in previous studies.

Five propositions regarding the relationship between work participation and

academic performance were tested, and none was found to adequately account

for the relationships observed. Rather, Grade Point Averages were relatively high

amongst two groups of students: those who did not work, and those working

more than 20 hours per week. Future research should explore the strategies

through which students who work long hours manage to perform well

academically.

According to the College Board (2007) that students who work possess

better quality management of skills than unemployed students. Furthermore,

6
students who are employed teach them to be responsible and can also make

their learning in school strengthen. All students are permitted to work a maximum

of 20 hours per week throughout the academic year (Bates, 2023). Their

academic success will be impacted or even decreased if they work more than 15

to 20 hours each week. Hence, it can also cause them to stop attending. Working

long limits the opportunity to build friendships and explore interests that makes

enhancement in intellectual and emotional growth. One of the most significant

disadvantages of working while studying is the possibility of experiencing stress

and exhaustion (Dowd, 2019). According to Koropets, Fedorova, and Kacane

(2019), combining education and work can burn out a student. Students who feel

exhaustion very often may feel less motivated and may lose their potential while

settling in an unhealthy and stressful lifestyle.

According to Cazan and Draghici (2022), every aspect of a person's life is

impacted by stress and burnout, and the rising number of students who are also

working raises some questions about how they will participate in their academic

work and complete their degrees. Students are the population most at risk of

psychological distress and psychological illnesses like anxiety, depression, and

panic disorder, making student stress and burnout significant health concerns on

a global scale. Studies have revealed that the stress created by balancing the

demands of employment and academic life could potentially contribute to

exhaustion or burnout, which is why burnout among employed students is

significantly higher.

7
According to Disabato, et al. (2016) Self-fulfillment, also known as self-

realization or self-actualization, is the combination of the hopes we have for our

life as well as the plan we construct for reaching them. This is self-examination,

or the process of reflecting on your own behaviors, feelings, and the motivations

behind them. According to Frontiers in Psychology (2018) attempts to quantify

the factors that lead to a fulfilling life, such as the ability to pursue one's own

goals, taking advantage of opportunities, and having the courage to do what one

feels is most important in life. The researchers, people derive fulfillment from

many things, but three factors rise to the top. They call these factors: "unfolded

self and life," "worthwhile life," and "positive impact and legacy."

According to Doris Baumann (2022), Fulfillment is an internal sense of

wholeness, in which we find value in recognizing our personal impact on the

world. It is essential for our mental health and increases as we age; with each

year we gain more knowledge, life experience, and expertise that can be shared.

According to Dr. Barbera (2021), Fulfillment is the process of living a valued life,

where one pursues things that matter to them or are passionate about. It involves

choosing actions that move a person towards what they value and achieving

goals guided by those values. Living a life with integrity towards ourselves and

one that's consistent with our values leads to a more fulfilled life. Happiness is

more externally driven, leaving us at the mercy of outside forces.

Challenges of the Working Students

8
This study is also to determine the experiences of working students in

their involvement in being employed in work and its effects on their daily life.

According to the description of Psychological Well-Being of Working Student in

Universitas Muhammadiyah Kalimantan Timur (2019) that students who often

work causes them to be easily stressed, which also may affect student’s mental

health and may decrease their academic achievements, it is because of lack of

rest time, hard time managing feelings and emotions, and limited time to do their

school activities. Furthermore, according to the National library of medicine

(2020), the main cause of students’ anxiety is because of their academic

workloads and lack of engagement in social activities. Which may be due to

work.

According to Filwebasia (2018) there are five common problems that

working students face; the majority of them will feel worn out and preoccupied.

Working students also prefer to put in extra hours at work rather than participate

in school activities. They also experience sleep deprivation and pressure, which

can cause other health problems. According to the website of Study Mode

Research (2018), shows that studying is an important part of life, but it can be

expensive and students often have to work and earn money on their own.

Working and studying at the same time can be difficult, as it consumes a lot of

time and energy. This can lead to students not being fully concentrated on their

studies, getting bad marks, and not passing important exams. Additionally,

students are highly exposed to stress due to the duties they have to execute at

9
work and in classes. This can lead to students being distracted from classes and

not being prepared for them.

According to Taylor (2022), the majority of students anticipate working

hard both now and in the future, yet their backgrounds may have an impact on

how much and how certain returns will be. Students are future-focused, and

taking part in term-time employment is considered preparation for a career after

graduation. The degree of conflict is influenced by the way that each student

approaches their job and studies, by how they view time and value, and by how

they were raised and have access to resources. According to Simplilearn (2023).

Students who properly manage their time develop greater confidence,

organization, and learning capacity. High school students need to be particularly

adept at time management since they have a greater number of topics, tests,

assignments, and extracurricular activities to manage.

According to Sibiu and Romania (2017) working students experiences

many challenges, they balance school, work, extracurricular activities, and

personal life. With these tremendous things that they encounter, it could lead to

stress, since balancing time is difficult and stressful for they have many things to

do. Also, experts agree that students who work for more than 15 hours per week

are most likely to experience a decrease in academic performance. According to

Fotini Polychroni (2022) stress is caused by the interference between working

and studying, that could lead to academic burnout. Working students

experiences academic burnout, this is considered as the result of long-term

10
academic pressures and stress, energy consumption, and a gradual decrease of

interest in academic activities due to work overload and extra activities or job.

According to Halimah Mohd Yusof (2019), poor management of stress can

affect students’ psychological well-being, such as anxiety and depression. Stress

does not only affect mental health but also their academic performances just like

the lack of revision time, difficulty in understanding the lessons, unable to answer

lecturer's questions, the anticipation in waiting for examination. In other words,

higher workload leads to higher stress and is affecting the student’s

psychological well-being. According to the website of MOL Learn Develop Excel

(2023) working and studying is tough or a challenging experience. It is difficult to

maintain motivation since there will be constant distractions and high demand for

constant energy and concentration. Their time is also limited since they need to

work and study at the same time.

Coping Mechanisms of the Working Students

According to UNITAR International (2022), Time management is essential

for students who are employed. It is important to set realistic deadlines and

prioritize education first. It is also important to maintain lines of communication

with teachers and mentors and to discuss any problems with someone who can

offer solutions. Working students should also make time to spend with their loved

ones to provide rest and renewal time. That will boost their mood and help them

balance their work and study more successfully.

11
According to Herzing University (2021) positivity is a mindset, it is a simple

idea that is not easy to do but can be practiced. Doing what works and what is

the best for you is a good thing to unleash your full potential. Learn to ignore the

negative people to protect your inner peace and to be more positive, since there

will be a bright future ahead of you. Learn to manage your time since being a

working student is challenging.

According from the Jesuit Conference of Asia Pacific (2021), our actions

reflects our intentions and our hope. Faith and hope gives us power to do good

things even if the situation is hard. We should never surrender despite the

hardships, continue to believe in your self and fight for your dreams to achieve it.

Change yourself first because success always starts from you.

According to Christine Paul Cardenas (2021). Everything starts with a

positive mindset. It’s a simple idea but it’s not always easy to put it into practice.

Optimism is contagious so you must motivate yourself and surround yourself with

positive people. Dont’t pay attention to naysayers and gossipers but focus on

those that have your best interests at heart. Stay away from unnecessary drama.

Focus on your own life and on what matters. Your own life is busy, to begin with,

so don’t waste extra time on things that take away your focus According to Caitlin

Clark (2022), recognizing the inherent beauty in life's ordinary moments might

lead to a more fulfilling lifestyle. A fourth essential avenue to discovering

meaning in life is experiential appreciation small things, or valuing experiences.

The findings support the initial hypothesis that appreciating small things can lead

to a more fulfilling existence.

12
According to Astudillo, Martos, et. al.. (2019) A person's capacity to

balance events in their lives is referred to as time management. It has a

tremendous impact on the lives of students, particularly those who work. They

labor for financial reasons and sometimes lack the supervision of parents and

teachers. Working students do not have enough time to study and devote the

majority of their time to work. According to Jimbo Antipolo (2022) time

management is done to uncover person’s efficacy and influence on their job;

nevertheless, we can find very limited literature addressing time management.

Every working student should investigate their time management to improve their

performance both at work and in academics. With this being said it is clearly

stated that managing your time is effective in improving your performance in work

and in school.

According to Esmari Pool (2022) one of the disadvantages to studying and

working at the same time is the lack of motivation to do or finish the pile of study

materials. This can be prevent when a person will never surrender in their life, by

motivating your self to never surrender and creating small goals to rewarding

yourself once it is achieved. According to Pao Loanzon (2020) schoolworks and

work isn't an easy thing to do. Putting them together can overwhelm almost

anyone. If you’re not used to working and studying at the same time, take your

time getting used to your new responsibilities also to be realistic with what you

can handle and to never give up despite the challenges that you may encounter.

According to Alison Sherwood (2022) positive thinking is an optimistic

attitude that practices us to focusing on the good in any given situation. This

13
simply means that you approach the good and the bad with the expectations that

everything will go well. Having this attitude will make you have better stress

management, less depression, clearer thinking, and better mood. According to

Julie Corliss (2020) staying positive during difficult times is hard but it can give

you a new perspective in life. We should focus on the good things in our life and

prevent thinking about the bad or the negativities that we have encountered. You

can develop this mindset by being more mindful, practicing gratitude, and sharing

kindness.

According to Mike Robbins (2021). Being thankful for the things around us

helps us recognize the good things that happen in our life and makes us feel

happier and more energized. It enables people to experience joy, fortify their

bonds with others, and increase their sense of gratitude for life. Additionally, it

promotes positivity, reduces negativity, and even lessens depression in certain

people. According to the website of Czech universities (2019), working at the

same leads to challenges, annoyance, and tiring. But there could be ways to

overcome it and it’s not impossible to manage to work and study simultaneously,

and maintain a fun, and great study and working life. Also think about cheering

yourself up by being happy about achieving something that you made while

working hard.

Insights of the Working Students

14
In this study by the Indeed Editorial Team (2021), some students may

need to work while pursuing their degree due to financial reasons, while others

may prefer employment because of the practical industry training and skill

development they may gain outside of their studies.

Many students may decide to look for employment while they're going to

school because of the networking opportunities workplaces can provide.

Networking can allow students to meet each other, create connections and

develop professional relationships or friendships that could benefit them as they

seek career opportunities in the future. One valuable aspect of working while

going to school is the professional experience you earn while simultaneously

pursuing your degree. In addition to assists you in creating effective time

management strategies so you can succeed in both your academic and

professional efforts, balancing several goals can help you balance work and

school while retaining your grades.

According to Chrissia Lynelle Lumugdan (2022) that there are various

benefits of being a working student. Earning money is one of the most evident

benefits of all the advantages a working student may have. They also get to have

an early experience that may be useful to them in the future. It also creates

connections to different people that can help them in the future as they look into

job prospects. Being smart about money is one of the advantages a working

student may have, they get to know about budgeting and establishing good

money management habits.

15
Theoretical Lens

In this section, this study is anchored on two different theories that would

support this study. The theory of Watts and Pickering (2000) argued that abilities

developed at the job are transferrable, and students who have a job are more

marketable owing to their development of organizational and time management

skills. Also, it was claimed that working pupils improved their intrapersonal and

interpersonal skills. This theory argues that students who are employed develop

skills at the job, and students also will learn time management and organizational

skills that will make them focus on their desirable achievements. However, it can

also give the working students pressures on their academic side, which may also

make them lose track of their studies while working. (Abenoja, Accion et at.,

2019)

On the other hand, the theory of employability theory by Knight and Yorke

in 2004 as cited by the website of Bartleby (2020) claims that employability is the

result of one's education, successes, and comprehension of personal talents

necessary to succeed in employment in their desired career. This theory

addresses that employability makes a person gain experience, as a result, it will

give them success and may also help them to attain their desired jobs.

Both these theories, the theory of Watts and Pickering, and the

employability theory are connected in this study because working students will

16
gain experiences when working, especially that those things will help them attain

their dream jobs.

CHAPTER 2

Method

This chapter is composed of the research design, participants, roles of the

researcher, ethical considerations, data collection, data analysis, and research

instrument.

Research Design

This study will use a qualitative design that observes a phenomenological

approach. Qualitative method uses a non-numerical data, to comprehend the

people's view, experiences, attitude, behavior, and interactions (Pathak, 2013).

17
Phenomenological research is a qualitative research approach that seeks to

understand and describe the universal essence of a phenomenon. In other

words, phenomenological research investigates lived experiences to gain a

better understanding of how people interpret those experiences (Delve and

Limpaecher, 2022). Phenomenological research can help us understand what it's

like to go through a particular situation or life event. Your research can get to the

heart of what it was truly like by describing the stories of people who lived

through a particular experience and their perceptions of it. The primary goals of

phenomenological research are to seek reality from people's narratives of their

experiences and feelings, as well as to produce detailed descriptions of the

phenomenon.

Participants and Sampling

In determining the participants, the researcher will use the purposive

sampling method. Purposive sampling is also called as a subjective sampling

and is a non-probability sampling, in which researchers pick individuals take part

on the research as a participant. This method requires the researcher to have

prior knowledge about the purpose of their studies so they can choose the right

participants for the research (Jordan, 2021). The participants of this study are

individuals who are working students specifically the Senior High schools. There

will be ten (10) purposively chosen individuals who work so hard to achieve their

goals in life. The researchers conducted a study to understand the difficulties

faced by working students and their feelings. They wanted to pay attention to

18
working students, as not all working students are helped by the government. The

study will involve interviews with real working students about their time

management and work habits. The researcher will identified from a real working

student about how they manage their time for school and work.

Research Instrument

In this study, 10 participants who are working students will be gathered to

participate in an interview. A semi-structured Interview is a qualitative data

collection tool in which the interviewer does not strictly adhere to a

predetermined set of questions. Instead of a straight question-and-response

approach, they will offer more open-ended questions, allowing for a conversation

with the interviewer. (Anonymous, 2020). By choosing a semi-structured

interview it is by combining the component of both structured and unstructured

interviews; will give the researchers the best of both worlds by gathering

comparable and trustworthy data and the ability to give follow-up questions.

Semi-structured interviews will provide us with better detail. This will also allow

the interviewers to learn from the participants’ answers and know the reasons

behind all those answers; they will allow the participants to answer freely,

especially when it comes to difficult and sensitive topics. There will be a

questionnaire as a guide for the interviewers. The participants will be asked

questions from the questionnaire. The participants will be encouraged to be more

focused on the questions and will be answering them properly. The interviewers

will encourage the participants to make the dialogue undergo deeper knowledge
19
and clear information through easy and straightforward questions to collect better

data.

Role of the Researcher

The primary role of a researcher is to provide the benefits and drawbacks

of a student balancing their studies and work. This study concluded that the

participants were happy and had good time management skills. They also

improve their personal lives and grow in responsibility. The study sought to learn

about and comprehend the opportunities and challenges faced by working

students. Similarly, this study examined into what motivated students to work and

how the job affected them. The researcher performed the roles of interviewer,

recorder, writer, and data analyst. The researcher sincerely feel that acquiring

the necessary information allowed us to arrive at the critical facts required for the

study. As a result, this study recognized the need of achieving proper study

concentration. Additionally, the researcher recorded and monitored all the

information that was provided during all the interviews. All the data will be

combined and generalized. Obtained. The ability of the researchers to copy and

record what the participants what participants did in light the study's goals. In the

end, we shall categorize the acquired material and arrange it in the proper

evaluation sequence, as well as roughly state what the study's results show.

Ethical Considerations

20
Proper use of ethics as the responsibility of the researchers will be taken

into account, not only for the sake of the research but also for the participants.

This is to ensure that the research will not violate the rights and privacy of the

subjects, and avoid misuse of information. Handling of information, gathered from

both reliable sources and the participants is set as a priority, in ensuring that this

research maintains its integrity in conducting the study. Through Informed

Consent, the participants will be informed of what the research is all about, its

goals, and more importantly, how it will benefit them. The method in which the

information and data are gathered will be done with caution and care, in order to

not compromise the participants' personal valuable information and the research

as a whole. Providing that the participants agree to join the interviews and group

discussions, the measure of protecting the anonymity of the participants involved

is taken seriously without question. Given that this study examines the threat

posed by information exploitation, it makes sense to employ the aforementioned

measure as a tool to prevent any misuse of information.

Data Collection

The researchers will be using the face-to-face individual interview for the

first five participants to gather data. According to Kimberly Houston (2022),

"Interviews are one of the most common qualitative data collection methods, and

they're a great approach when you need to gather highly personalized

information." The focus group discussion will also be utilized in gathering data

21
from another set of five participants, it will gather participants with similar traits

and experiences to come up with a conclusion (George, 2023). Hence, a series

of questions and issues to be discussed precede the actual discussion. A method

of interviewing gives the researcher the opportunity to ask questions of their

participants. This method also allowed the researcher to read non-verbal

communication and reactions, which are necessary for data analysis. The

interviewing process needed to be recorded, but with the permission of the

participants, and later transcribed. A non-judgmental attitude of the researcher

towards the participants is crucial to building rapport between the researcher and

participant, as it encourages some participants. The atmosphere while

interviewing the participant needs to be comfortable so that the participant can

talk freely and openly during the interview. Asking the participants where they

want to be interviewed is a good idea as well.

Data Analysis

Qualitative data analysis can be observed and recorded. Observations

from interviews and focus group discussions are the methods used to acquire

information. Examining, classifying, analyzing, testing, and recombining data is

the aim of data analysis, which aims to find patterns, identify explanations and

time series, create conclusions, and develop theories. First, use codes to analyze

the data that is being gathered. The researchers will organize the database on

categories and themes. Once thematic analysis is done, the trust can be trusted.

22
This method will help the researchers to improve the study’s validity. As for

validity, we will use the triangulation method to better the validity and credibility of

this study in order for researchers to trust the acquired data. By this, the study

will be evaluated and examined along with the data that was collected through

interviews. In data analysis, we will use quotations to highlight important parts of

this research.

CHAPTER 3

Results and Discussions

This chapter presents the results, discussion, and personal insights that

the researchers have gathered through the process of conducting the study

"Lived Experiences of the Selected Senior Highschool Working Students".

Scholarly works and findings back up the study’s findings, indicating that the

evidence is thoroughly analyzed. In the qualitative part of the study, the main

instrument used in this study is nine (9) open-ended questions that determined

the participants lived experiences as working students. 1. What are your

experiences as working student?, 1.1 What are your reason to become a working

students?, 1.2 Do you find it hard becoming a working student? Explain, 2. What

23
are your reason to become a working students?, 2.1 What are the effects of

challenges that you have encountered?, 2.2 How did you cope up with that

struggles as working student?, 3. What are your perceptions of being a working

student?, 3.1 What are your suggestions for students who are working while

studying?, 3.2 Do you encourage other students to be a working student?

Explain

The Lived Experiences of The Selected Senior Highschool Working

Students

THEME 1: EXHAUSTED

According to Dowd (2019), one of the most signicant disadvantages of

being a working student is experiencing exhaustion or being exhausted. Due to

this the person will most likely neglect their health status, and could end up

getting sick that will cause you to missed school and work that will have

detrimental consequences.

According to Koropets, Fedorova, and Kacane (2019), combining

education and work can burn out a student. Students who feel exhaustion very

often may feel less motivated and may lose their potential while settling in an

unhealthy and stressful lifestyle.

According to Cazan and Draghici (2022), every aspect of a person's life is

impacted by stress and burnout, and the rising number of students who are also

working raises some questions about how they will participate in their academic

24
work and complete their degrees.

"Kapoy. Kuan, kanang unsa na? Mag tunga-tunga ka sa imong time ba. Mura jud

ug mag study ba. Pang gabie, karon rapud to na tuig oy..." (P3, IDI, L1-13)

“Exhausting since my time is limited, I do not really study at night, but it was just

an experienced this year..."

"kapoy, pero ano lang kaning ginakaya lang" (P2, IDI, L2-4)

“Exhausting but still always trying.."

"Kaning kapoy man pero kaya raman gihapon laban lang gihapon, laban lang

perminti dili padala sa kakapoy.’’ (P2, IDI, L22-29)

"Even though I'm tired, but I can still fight, just fight, let me not give in to fatigue.''

"Kapoy. Wala koy mahuna-hunaan. Tamad na mo sulod sa skwela kay kapoy."

(P3, IDI, L1-6)

"I'm tired. I can't think of anything. You're lazy in school because you're tired."

THEME 2: TOUGH

25
According to the website of MOL Learn Develop Excel (2023) working and

studying is tough or a challenging experience. It is difficult to maintain motivation

since there will be constant distractions and high demand for constant energy

and concentration. Their time is also limited since they need to work and study at

the same time.

"As I working student especially is not easy. Working per day while balancing my

studies is destroying my mind. Uhm, studying at the same time working is very

hard..." (P5, IDI, L11-14)

‘’Hard gihapon, kay kanang kapoy ana, like lisod kay kanang gikan paka sa

skwelahan kapoy na daan , kapoy na unya pag uli nimog balay trabaho nasad ,

nya naa pay mga assignment , naa pay mga buluhaton unya dugay maka tulog.."

(P2, IDI, L1-14)

“It is hard, since it is tiring like from school you can feel exhaustion then when

you arrived at home there are some errands to do, then there are assignments

and other tasks that resulted me to sleeping late.."

“Lisod mag manage og time and dapat mag multitask ka at the same time..." (P6,

FGD, L1-4)

26
“It is hard to manage time and mostly we need to multitask.."

THEME 3: FULFILLING

According to Chrissia Lynelle Lumugdan (2022) that there are various

benefits of being a working student. Earning money is one of the most evident

benefits of all the advantages a working student may have. They also get to have

an early experience that may be useful to them in the future. It also creates

connections to different people that can help them in the future as they look into

job prospects. Being smart about money is one of the advantages a working

student may have, they get to know about budgeting and establishing good

money management habits.

Barbera (2021), Fulfillment is the process of living a

valued life, where one pursues things that matter to them or are passionate

about. It involves choosing actions that move a person towards what they value

and achieving goals guided by those values. Living a life with integrity towards

ourselves and one that's consistent with our values leads to a more fulfilled life.

Happiness is more externally driven, leaving us at the mercy of outside forces.

27
"As a working student it is quite fulfilling because I'm able to buy or provide

anything to my family.” (P7, FGD, L1-6)

"Para saakoa lisod nga fulfilling, kay tungod lisod siya sa paraan nga ikaw ang

naga supporta saimohang sarili ikaw mo hatag saimong kaugalingong

kinahangla fulfilling siya..." (P9, FGD, L1-12)

“For me it is hard but at the same time fulfilling, since it is hard in a way that you

are the one who supports yourself financially..."

"To provide for myself for my needs like for school, food, and clothes." (P5,IDI,

L8-13)

"Para makatabang ko saakong pamilya og saakong kaugalingon." (P10, FGD,

L1-6)

"To help my family and myself."

The Challenges of The Selected Senior Highschool Working Students

THEME 1: TIME MANAGEMENT

According to Simplilearn (2023). Students who properly manage their time

develop greater confidence, organization, and learning capacity. High school

students need to be particularly adept at time management since they have a

greater number of topics, tests, assignments, and extracurricular activities to

manage.

According to Astudillo, Martos, et. al.. (2019) A person's capacity to

balance events in their lives is referred to as time management. It has a

tremendous impact on the lives of students, particularly those who work. They

28
labor for financial reasons and sometimes lack the supervision of parents and

teachers. Working students do not have enough time to study and devote the

majority of their time to work.

According to Jimbo Antipolo (2022) time management is done to uncover

person’s efficacy and influence on their job; nevertheless, we can find very

limited literature addressing time management. Every working student should

investigate their time management to improve their performance both at work

and in academics. With this being said it is clearly stated that managing your time

is effective in improving your performance in work and in school.

"Proper time management since if naa kay proper time management is ma Kuan

ma kanang pwede ka mag length ug time sa in ani na task or ani na butang then

pwede pud nimo siya like ma control or ma manage imohang oras.” (P7, FGD,

L4-16)

"Proper time management since if you have it, you can manage and control your

time and finish your tasks."

"Kanang split jud akoang time ana kung mag ma mag kung instead na kanang

mag study lang kog akoa lang mag ma dapat akoang buhaton ana magstudy xad

akaoang studyhan tudloan nako akong pinsan.” (P6, FGD, L13-25)

"My time will be split since instead of studying on my own, I still need to teach my

cousin."

"Then, kanang like naay time na dili gani ka sayo og mata, Like maka mata ko

alas 7(Morning). Kay matulog man ko alas 12(Midnight) mao maka mata ko alas

29
7(Morning), then pag naa akoang amo kay masuko siya, Kay kailangan gyud na

3 AM mata naka." (P1, IDI, L3-22)

"Then, like there are times when you don't even wake up early, like I can wake up

at 7 (Morning). Because I sleep at 12 (Midnight) so I can wake up at 7 (Morning),

then when I have my boss because He'll be angry, because it's really 3 AM."

(P2, IDI, L1-32)

''It's still hard, because it's tiring, it's like it's hard because you're already tired

from school, you're tired when you go home to work, you still have assignments,

you still have tasks to do, and then it takes a long time to sleep, then in the

morning You woke up early because you still have two children to take care of,

especially yesterday because it rained, I was practicing volleyball and it was very

hot. them."

"kailangan jud nimo I balance ang duha. Sa grades nimo at the same time sa

performance nimo sa gigs. Dili ka maka practice og tarong." (P4, IDI, L10-22)

"You have to balance the two. With your grades at the same time with your

performance in gigs. You can't practice properly."

THEME 2: STRESS DUE TO PAPERWORKS

30
According to the description of Psychological Well-Being of Working

Student in Universitas Muhammadiyah Kalimantan Timur (2019) that students

who often work causes them to be easily stressed, which also may affect

student’s mental health and may decrease their academic achievements, it is

because of lack of rest time, hard time managing feelings and emotions, and

limited time to do their school activities.

According to Fotini Polychroni (2022), stress is caused by the interference

between working and studying which could lead to academic burnout. Working

student experiences academic burnout, this is considered the result of long-term

academic pressures and stress, energy consumption, and a gradual decrease of

interest in academic activities due to work overload and extra activities or job.

"Sa akoa kay murag malimitahan nako ang time for my studies since mahati ang

akoang attention sa work ug saakoang academics.” (P7, FGD, L2-8)

"For me my time is limited for my studies since my time and attention will be split

in half for my work and academics."

31
"For me, experiences of anxiety because each day I always think that instead of

working I should be at school that’s why time management should be there to

balance." (P5, IDI, L1-12)

"Effect ani sakung life is maguba jud imung mental health pero laban lang japun

Kay kinahanglan." (P10, FGD, L1-7)

"The effect of being a working student in my life is that it made my mental health

damaged but still I am striving since it is needed."

THEME 3: STAYING POSITIVE

According to Christine Paul Cardenas (2021). Everything starts with a

positive mindset. It’s a simple idea but it’s not always easy to put it into practice.

Optimism is contagious so you must motivate yourself and surround yourself with

positive people. Dont’t pay attention to naysayers and gossipers but focus on

those that have your best interests at heart. Stay away from unnecessary drama.

Focus on your own life and on what matters. Your own life is busy, to begin with,

so don’t waste extra time on things that take away your focus.

According to Alison Sherwood (2022) positive thinking is an optimistic

attitude that practices us to focusing on the good in any given situation. This

simply means that you approach the good and the bad with the expectations that

everything will go well. Having this attitude will make you have better stress

management, less depression, clearer thinking, and better mood.

According to Julie Corliss (2020) staying positive during difficult times is

hard but it can give you a new perspective in life. We should focus on the good

32
things in our life and prevent thinking about the bad or the negativities that we

have encountered. You can develop this mindset by being more mindful,

practicing gratitude, and sharing kindness.

"Kuan kaning always positive lang niya praise kay God..." (P10, FGD, L1-4)

"Stay positive always and praise God…"

"Akoang ginahunahuna nga nga ana ko malampasan nako ning problemaha

kanang in ana mao to start mn gihapon ko bahalag kapoy na.” (P8, FGD, L4-12)

"I always think that I will get through all of the challenges in my life, then I will

start again even though it is exhausting..."

"Ano lang kanang like positive lang jud always, laban lang jud perminte.." (P2,

IDI, L4-7)

"Stay positive always, and always be strong..."

"For me, by hanging out with friends. To not be affected too much like to never

give up and think positively because all of this is for myself." (P5, IDI, L1-12)

"Akoang inspiration kay akoang family and kanang gusto xad nako ma achieve

ang dream." (P6, FGD, L5-11)

"My inspiration is my family and also I want to achieve my dreams."

Insights About The Lived Experiences of The Selected Senior High School

Working Students

THEME 1: BE STRONG

33
According to Herzing University (2021) positivity is a mindset, it is a simple

idea that is not easy to do but can be practiced. Doing what works and what is

the best for you is a good thing to unleash your full potential. Learn to ignore the

negative people to protect your inner peace and to be more positive, since there

will be a bright future ahead of you. Learn to manage your time since being a

working student is challenging.

According to the website of Czech universities (2019), working at the

same leads to challenges, annoyance, and tiring. But there could be ways to

overcome it and it’s not impossible to manage to work and study simultaneously,

and maintain a fun, and great study and working life. And also think about

cheering yourself up by being happy about achieving something that you made

while working hard.

"Pait gyud ang kinabuhi kung dili ka maningkamot." (P8, FGD, L2-4)

"Life is hard if you do not work hard"

"Maningkamot jud ka. Kay being working student dili jud siya sayon dapat

maningkamot jud ka para maka lampos ka..." (P4, IDI, L1-8)

"To strive hard, since being a working student is not easy we need to be strong to

succeed..."

"I have to encourage myself to think strong and to never give up despite of

everything I’ve encountered." (P5, IDI, L12-20)

"Like kaning naging independent ko. Kanang dili nako mingawon sailaha." (P1,

IDI, L1-6)

"I became an independent person, I do not really miss them now."

34
THEME 2: NEVER SURRENDER

According from the Jesuit Conference of Asia Pacific (2021), our actions

reflects our intentions and our hope. Faith and hope gives us power to do good

things even if the situation is hard. We should never surrender despite the

hardships, continue to believe in your self and fight for your dreams to achieve it.

Change yourself first because success always starts from you.

According to Pao Loanzon (2020) schoolworks and work isn't an easy

thing to do. Putting them together can overwhelm almost anyone. If you’re not

used to working and studying at the same time, take your time getting used to

your new responsibilities also to be realistic with what you can handle and to

never give up despite the challenges that you may encounter.

‘’Ano lang ang lesson na akong na ano kay kanang kay dili jud dayon mo give up

sa ano kay kung mo give up ka dayon kay kanang murag kapoyon ka dayon.."

(P2, IDI, L1-9)

"The lesson that I have gained is that you never give up since if you give up that

easily it can make you feel exhausted..."

35
"No matter what happen, what challenges dapat I push lang gyud nimo." (P4, IDI,

L1-6)

"No matter what happens or what challenges you may encounter you should

always encourage yourself..."

"Trust myself because I no one can do that for me but myself." (P5, IDI, L3-8)

THEME 3: BEING APPRECIATABLE

According to Caitlin Clark (2022), recognizing the inherent beauty in life's

ordinary moments might lead to a more fulfilling lifestyle. A fourth essential

avenue to discovering meaning in life is experiential appreciation small things, or

valuing experiences. The findings support the initial hypothesis that appreciating

small things can lead to a more fulfilling existence.

According to Mike Robbins (2021). Being thankful for the things around us

helps us recognize the good things that happen in our life and makes us feel

happier and more energized. It enables people to experience joy, fortify their

bonds with others, and increase their sense of gratitude for life. Additionally, it

promotes positivity, reduces negativity, and even lessens depression in certain

people.

"Be appreciatable tapos being contented kabalo makuntinto sa kinabuhi kay diri

nato makuha tanan butang na atoang gusto....." (P9, FGD, L1-8)

"Be appreciatable and contented, learn to be contented in our life because we

can not have everything that we want..."

36
"Appreciate ang mga gagmay na butang.” (P10, FGD, L1-12)

"Appreciate the small things in life."

"Siguro being great full and contented since kanang ma dali nalang saakoa ma

value ang mga things." (P7, FGD, L1-7)

"Being grateful and contented since it makes it easy for me to value small things."

CHAPTER 4

Conclusions and Recommendations

In this chapter the conclusions derived from the findings of this study on

the lived experiences of the selected senior high school working students. The

conclusions were based on the purpose, research questions and results of the

study. The implications of these findings and the resultant recommendations will

also be explained. Recommendations were based on the conclusions and

purposes of the study.

37
CONCLUSIONS

The following conclusion were based on the in-depth analysis of the

results of the study:

This study highlights the experiences of senior high school working

students, in regard to the challenges and stress they encounter. The participants

of this study deal with challenges, and according to them, it’s really exhausting

and hard to become a working student. They also give us their major reason why

they chose to work, along the lines of financial problems, to provide needs, and

also for their school requirements and projects. Especially since they also need

money and also to help their family. However, those things would also lead them

to be stressed and can have mental problems. Thus, this would also give them

an opportunity to gain experience that can benefit them.

In addition, as what is mentioned, working students can experience

positive, and negative effects and health issues. That should be a concern to all

students who acquired work, and doing part-time jobs while being on the line of

studying is already an effect of their lifestyle. Having a hard time making money

is a hard task for them, and dealing with challenges can also determine whether

those things will help them or not. As we continue determining their experiences,

we came to the conclusion that they also encounter low grades, anxiety, and

tiredness, which are common experiences that a working student would come

across. However, they can overcome those things by giving themselves time to

38
be free from those responsibilities by doing coping mechanisms, such as hanging

with friends, doing social activities, and more. Which can build courage and

confidence to continue working. And at the same time, will improve their selves

more.

Lastly, the insights of this study show that the participants also learned to

always be positive and to stay strong, thus maintaining their motivation to

continue working, including those values they mentioned, which are to be content

with what they have. However, most of them also discourage other students from

working, especially because it’s hard. Due to the fact that managing time and

effort to combine work and study is not easy, learning about their experiences

gives us information that will also make us aware of and understand them.

RECOMMENDATIONS

The researchers make the following recommendations for Teachers,

Students, Parents, and Future Researchers.

Teachers

The following recommendations are made:

 Teachers should understand students’ struggles to help them maintain

academic standing.

 The teachers should understand the situation of their students.

 The teachers must lessen their expectations to their students.

39
 Communicate always with students and parents

Students

The following recommendations are made:

 Students need to be aware that not every student has the same financial

situation. They ought to be perceptive enough to recognize each student's

difficulties.

 Respect your co-students knowing that they’re a working student.

 Always treat your co-students with kindness and respect.

 Always trust the process and life struggles

Parents

The following recommendations are made:

 Parents should be aware of the difficulties faced by students who are

employed because maintaining adequate academic performance is

difficult, particularly if the students are responsible for all household costs.

 Try your best to understand the behavior of your child.

 Support your child in any cost and do not pressure your child to achieve

high grades in their study.

 As much as possible communicate and help your child.

40
Future Researchers

The Following recommendations are made:

 Future researchers should get ideas from other research that are related

to their study to gather more knowledge about the topic to strengthen their

study.

 Provide more studies that will support your research
