Practicing the Engineering

Design Process
Hobby Organizer
Review the Engineering Design Process
Engineers must understand the problem they need to solve as well
as the criteria and constraints that they must meet.

They use a design brief to identify the problem, the expectations,

and the constraints. A design brief is needed to complete the first
step,

Define the problem of the design process. After the problem is

defined, the engineer can continue with the design process knowing
that they may have to go back to the beginning and redefine the
problem at any point during the process.

Choose 1 to Prototype
1. Hobby Organizer
You will design an organizer for your favorite hobby. Maybe you like to shop, and you
need an organizer for your purse; maybe you like to play football, and you need an
organizer to carry your equipment and ball; maybe you like to play video games, and you
need an organizer for your games; or maybe you like to collect jewelry, and you need an
organizer for your jewelry.

Step 1: Define the Problem

What do you want to design? The object that I will design a organizer
Hobby Organizer for is books.

Who will it be for? (Adult or child) Child (me:))

What is the PURPOSE of your project? The purpose of the book organization
**This is also called the “problem”** will be to keep my books looking
organized.

Step 2: Generate Concepts

L:10in
What are the dimensions (measurements) W:9in
of your project?
D:6in
What materials would/could you use? I could use cardboard for the durability,
and paint for color

How much weight must it hold? 10.1 Pounds

Any other information?? The book organization will be a drawer

with a clear screen

During this step you may need to use the internet, look at books, or measure
existing products.

Step 3: Design a Solution

The next step is to Develop a Solution. Sketch three

different ideas and annotate (put notes on) your sketch
where appropriate. Overall dimensions are important
to include on your sketches.

Insert an image (or 3 images) of your sketches on the

next slide.

Step 3: Design a Solution

Step 3: Design a Solution
Use a decision matrix to decide which of the 3 designs you will develop
further. Watch this video to learn how to use the Decision Matrix.
Step 3: Design a Solution
Use a decision matrix to decide which of the 3 designs you will develop
further. Using a decision matrix helps you to evaluate whether you have met
the criteria with each of your designs and which design best meets the goal.

Step 4: Build and Test

Using your winning design from the last slide,
digitally build your project.

You use do this 1 of 2 ways:

1. Use Shapes in Google Slides ---->
2. Use tinkercad.com for a 3D design if you
know how

Step 4: Build and Test

Insert your DESIGN here using shapes OR a screenshot of your TinkerCad Design.
Step 5 & 6: Evaluate & Present Solution
What was the most difficult part of the To think of more then 2 ideas
design process? Why?

Why did you choose the solution you because it is the easiest to make
did?
What personality traits do you do you I would be a good partner, because I
think would make you a good partner would stay on task.
to work with? Why?
