GAY LUSSAC’S LAW

-it states that the pressure of the gas is directly proportional to temperature at constant
volume.

P1/T1 = P2/T2

Sample Problem:
Determine the pressure change when a constant volume of gas at 1.00 atm is
heated from 200C to 300C.
Given:
P1 = 1.00 atm
T1 = 200C = 293 K
T2 = 300C = 303 K
P2=?
Solution:
P2 = P1T2/T1
= 1.00 atm (303 K)
293 K
P2 = 1.03 atm Conclusion: The Pressure increases because the
Temperature increases also.
Solve the problem in 1 whole sheet of paper.
1. Given:
P1 = 2.00 atm
T1 = 400C
T2 = 1500C
P2=?

COMBINED GAS LAW

Expresses the relationship between the pressure, volume, and absolute temperature of
a fixed amount of gas. It combines the 3 laws: Boyle’s Law, Charles’ Law, and Gay-
Lussac’s Law.

P1V1/T1 = P2V2/T2

Sample Problem.
2.0 liter of gas at 35OC and 0.833 atm is brought to standard temperature and
pressure (STP). What is the new volume(V2) of the gas?

1.Given: P1 = 0.833 atm

T1 = 350C = 308 K
T2 = 00C = 273 K
P2 = 1.00 atm
V1 = 2.0 L
V2 = ?

Solution:
V2 = P1V1T2
P2T1
= 0.833 atm ( 2.0 L) ( 273 K)
1.0 atm (308 K)
= 454.818 L
308
V2 = 1.48 L

Solve the problem in 1 whole sheet of paper.

1.Given: P1 = 2.5 atm

T1 = 200C
T2 = 100C
P2 = 1.8.00 atm
V1 = 5.0 L
V2 = ?
