Introduction:

Chandeleur is a traditional holiday celebrated in France, Belgium and Sweden on the 2nd of
February, in which crepes are consumed. We will explore its history and culture, as well as
other matters, in this project.

Part 2: The History of Chandeleur

Chandeleur overcame many changes in history, firstly starting as a ritual and celebration of
the crops, as well as offering pancakes to the poor. It spread throughout christianity, being
modified into what we know today, keeping the tradition of lighting candles afloat.

Part 3: how is it celebrated?

It is celebrated in the afternoon, with family or friends, in which homemade crepes are baked
and enjoyed just when the days are becoming longer.

Part 4: The Role of Crepes in Chandeleur.

Crepes in chandeleur have been theorized to represent the excess of wheat that was
harvested. Traditionally, one makes a wish when the crepe is flipped, and if it does not tear it
will become true.

Part 5: 2nd February fest around the world.

This festivity has its alterations in some countries. Candlemas is celebrated on the same
day, being a christian celebration in which candles are lit and processions take place. In
North America we find groundhog day, in which a groundhog has to crawl out of his burrow
to signify 6 more days of winter. Setsubun is celebrated in Japan, where roasted soybeans
are thrown to drive away evil spirits and invite good fortune into the household. Imbolc and
Maslenitsa are also celebrated on February 2nd.

Part 6: Fun facts.

Some curiosities about this festival include racing with pancakes, decoration of chandeliers,
traditional songs about crepes, and predicting the weather on that fateful day.

Part 7: Chandeleur and tourism in France:

Chandeleur has brought tourism to regions in France, such as Brittany. Tourists immerse in
the culture, taste traditional crepes, or even attend cooking courses. This benefits both locals
and tourists.

Part 8: representation of Chandeleur

Some films or shows in which Chandeleur has been promoted are “Midnight in Paris”, “La
vie en Rose” and “Gilmore Girls”

Part 9: The Traditional Recipe.

The recipe for making crepes just like in Chandeleur is:
- 250 grams of flour.
- 4 eggs.
- 500 ml of milk.
- 50 grams of melted butter.
- A pinch of salt.
- Sugar (optional).
- Oil or butter for greasing the pan.
Mix the flour and the salt in a bowl. Beat the eggs in a separate one, and mix it with the flour.
Gradually add the milk while stirring gently. Afterwards, add melted butter and let it rest for
30 minutes after mixing well. Heat a non-stick pan over medium-high heat. Pour ¼ cups of
batter into the pan and spread it, letting it cook for 2 minutes until the edges are golden. Flip
it over and cook the other side for 2 more minutes. Remove the crêpe from the pan and
place it on a plate.
Vanilla or almond extract enhances the flavor. Add as much chocolate or sugar as you desire
on the plate!
