Read Text One. Then answer Questions 1 – 3.

1. In lines 8 – 16, identify TWO reasons why Bryson dislikes sand. (2 marks)

2. From lines 17 – 21 give TWO examples of the effects of sand. (2 marks)

3. Analyse how Bryson uses language and structure to interest and engage readers.

Read Text Two. Then answer Questions 4 – 6.

4. Name ONE famous person who has stayed at the Old Cataract Hotel. (1 mark)

5. Identify the phrase in lines 27 - 31 which describes the location of the Old Cataract Hotel.

6. Osborne attempts to engage the reader through his description of his trip to Aswan. Evaluate how
successfully this is achieved.

8. Write a newspaper article about school trips.

You could write about:

 different types of trips that the school might offer


 what the benefits are and/or what the problems could be
 your experiences (good and bad) of school trips

as well as any other ideas you might have.

spelling,punctuation and grammar.

9. Write a letter to the school governors persuading them to allow a trip to an exotic location of your
choice to take place.

You could write about:

 the destination and itinerary of the trip


 the benefits of the trip to pupils
 any problems you may encounter and the solutions you would put in place

as well as any other ideas you might have.
