WINTER HOMEWORK FOR CLASS XI


SESSION 2020-2021

ENGLISH:
A) Read ―A Marriage Proposal‖, a one-act play by Anton Chekov.
1. Write the play in the form of a short story giving it a different ending.
2. Do you find any similarities in how marriages are arranged in the play and in your
own culture? Mention a few things which are common to both.
B) Watch a sci-fi movie. Write a paragraph about how you liked the movie. Mention any two
improbable things that you think couldn‘t possibly happen in your world (200 words).
C) An idiom is a phrase or expression that typically presents a figurative, non-literal meaning
attached to the phrase. Idioms may be shared between multiple languages. The phrase "to shed
crocodile tears,"—meaning to express insincere sorrow—is also used in Urdu, Arabic, Swahili,
Persian and Chinese, among others.
Can you think of some idioms whose words convey the same meaning in English as in
Urdu/Hindi? (You may come across some in the first lesson of your English text-book)
Compile a list of such idioms and use them in sentences to bring out their meaning in the English
language.

FUNCTIONAL ENGLISH:

A) An excerpt from the novel ‗To Sir, with Love‘ is part of your Literature Reader. I am sure
you will enjoy reading this autobiographical novel by E.R. Braithwaite and be able to answer the
following questions:

1. How do you feel about the incident where the girls burn the sanitary napkin in the classroom?
Do you think the teacher responded in an appropriate manner? Give your opinion in about 200
words.

2. Do you think the relationship Mr Braithwaite shares with his students is a common one
between teachers and students? Have you ever shared a special rapport with any of your
teachers? Write a short paragraph on how it has influenced you. (200 words)

B) Write a letter to your friend Margo who lives in America, sharing your hopes and aspirations
for the New Year. As Margo, reply back with her experiences of the Covid-19 pandemic.

C) Make creative posters about any two interesting incidents/events that might take place during
your winter break (For example, it could be the announcement of a breakthrough vaccine)

PHYSICS:
1) Make a list of formulas used in differentiation and integration of simple functions.
2) Draw necessary drawings highlighting the geometrical significance of differentiation and
integration.
3) Make a list of S.I. units of fundamental and derived physical quantities along with their
dimensions.

2) Fundamentals of physics by Resnik, Halliday and Walker.

CHEMISTRY:

1: Prepare a MODERN PERIODIC TABLE on chart paper shading different blocks in different
colours.
2: Prepare a project on GREENHOUSE EFFECT.
3: Suggest strategies for overcoming

ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION.

•Serial number on 2 and 3 to be submitted on A4 size loose sheets,hand written and spiral bound.
•There must be no extravagance in decorating the project. It must be simple but professional in
letter and spirit.
•Content shall be evaluated thoroughly and not decorations.
•Submission date shall be notified separately

ZOOLOGY:
A) Prepare an assignment on Animal tissues.

1. Title Page – This is the first page which carries the following information
(i) Title / Aim
(ii) Name of the student with class and section
2. Table of contents – This page records the content of the assignment preferably with
corresponding page numbers.
3. Introduction – This provides a brief introduction about animal tissues
4. Content – This section should include the following information:
(i) Types of Animal tissues which include epithelial tissue, muscular tissue, connective tissue
and nervous tissue
(ii) To make well labeled diagrams of each tissue
(iii) To lay special emphasis on functions of various tissues with suitable examples.
5. Bibliography – On this page a list of books, source of images etc
B) To find answers of more than 10 conceptual questions related to various animal tissues.
C) Movies to watch:

ii) Future Girls: Adventures in Marine Biology
iii) Into the wild
D) Documentary to watch --------Darwin‘s Struggle: The Evolution of the Origin of Species

BOTANY:

To prepare an assignment on ―Morphology of flowering plants and their functions‖. Dear


children, in this topic you need to explain morphology of root, stem, leaves, inflorescence,
flower, fruits and seed. Description of flowering plants- one each from families Fabaceae,
Solonaceae and Liliacae.

MATHEMATICS:
SET THEORY: A thorough application of set theory is expected from students after studying the
chapter.

RELATIONS AND FUNCTIONS: Students should be able to plot functions after studying their
basic properties and should be able to recognize relations between two sets.

INFORMATION PRACTICES:

Choose any one of the Peripheral (input or output) devices from chapter No. 4 and create an
efficiently animated Power Point Presentation showing the structure and working of the chosen
device.
