1. PLANTING AND CARING OF A TREE

INTRODUCTION:
A tree is a tall plant with a trunk and branches made of wood. Trees can live
for many years. The oldest tree ever discovered is approximately 5,000 years
old. The four main parts of atree are the roots, the trunk, the branches, and
the leaves. The roots of a tree are usually under the ground. Sometimes,
roots are specialised into aerial roots, which can also provide support, as is
the case with the banyan tree. The trunk is the main body of the tree. The
trunk is covered with bark which protects it from damage. The leaves of a
tree are green most of the time, but they can come in many colours, shapes
and sizes. The leaves take in sunlight and use water and food from the roots
to make the tree grow, and to reproduce. Trees and shrubs take in water and
carbon dioxide and give out oxygen with sunlight to form sugars. This is the
opposite of what animals do in respiration. Plants also do some respiration
using oxygen the way animals do. They need oxygen as well as carbon
dioxide.
Page | 11

1.2 The best to plant a tree

Trees (and shrubs) can be planted anytime of the year that you can dig
the proper planting hole. However, there are better times than others
for multiple reasons. Suffice it to say, the more time you can put
between when you plant a tree, and the arrival of summer, the better.
That makes fall the very best time of year to relocate trees and shrubs
or plant new ones. Early spring is a popular time as well
When you plant a tree, you celebrate the earth by increasing its leafy

Page | 12
canopy. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, "One acre of
forest absorbs six tons of carbon dioxide and puts out four tons of
oxygen. This is enough to meet the annual needs of 18 people." Trees
also add beauty, increase the value of your home, provide cooling shade
and offer shelter for wildlife. Proper planting is critical to their survival
and long-term success
1.3 Watering a plant
Page | 13
When moving your plant into the planting hole, disturb the root
ball as little as possible. Lift B&B trees and shrubs by using the
rope, burlap or wire cage on the root ball. Lift potted plants by
grasping the container. Don't lift plants by the trunk, stems or
branches. Don't allow the root system to dry out before or
during planting.

Water measurements can be made using an old 1-gallon plastic

milk container. When using a hose, turn on the water at a slow
trickle and take note of the setting. Multiply that amount of time
by the number of gallons you need for your plant.

Page | 14
NINE IMPORTANT STEPS

2.1 Planning:
Right Tree at Right Place

Know your property and what space you have. Determine which areas
most effectively shade, and then select the right tree for that location.

―Right tree‖ means the species and full-grown size of the tree is best
Suited for your home and the area you have available to plant the tree
home and the area you have available to plant the tree most effectively

shade, and then select the right tree for that location.

―Right place‖ means the tree has enough space to grow to its full, mature
height, and its root system has the space it needs to grow fully without
interfering with surrounding infrastructure or underground pipes or utility
lines. Don‘t forget to plant to the west or east of your building to help
reduce energy costs and save energy.
2. 2 Dig a proper planting hole:
Once you select the prepared place and gather equipment to dig a planting
hole. When preparing any hole for planting, make it three times wider than
the current root mass but never deeper than the plant was growing
in its previous environment.
An even better guide with trees is to look for the flare of the trunk near the
soil level. Don‘t place the tree in the planting hole so deep that any part of
Page | 15

that flare is covered with soil. The truth is, even nurseries sometimes
put plants in containers too deeply. Make a habit of checking this.

2.3 Ensure root ball is 1-2” above soil:

Placing trees and shrubs in their new environment with up to 25% of the
root ball higher than the surrounding soil level. Then tapersoil up to coverall
the roots and add a generous layer of mulch above that. Newly disturbed
soil tends to settle, and shrubs and trees planted at grade can quickly settle
below grade and succumb to root rotor disease.

2.4 Loosen outside root from root ball:

Once the plant is out of its container, look at the roots. If they are densely
bound in a circular pattern or have started growing in the shape of the
container (even slightly), breakup the pattern. It‘s vitally important to stop
this pattern now. The biggest mistake you can make at this point is to place
a rootbound plant into the ground as is. Unless you break up the pattern,
you‘ve likely sentenced the plant to a slow death. At a minimum,it will
likely never establish or reach a fraction of its potential.Don‘t worry about
hurting the roots or losing soil as you break the roots apart or even cut
some away. Better to give them a fresh start than allow the constrictive
pattern to only get worse below ground. While you don‘t want to be any
rougher than necessary, do what you must to arrest the pattern.
Page | 16

2.6 Eliminate air pockets:

While you could lightly tamp or hand-pack the soil around the plant
roots to ensure good soil-to-root contact, I prefer to add a stiff
spray of water to the hole after back filling halfway. Not only does
it provide needed moisture, but the water also helps eliminate air
pockets that could otherwise result in dead roots or worse
(without compacting the soil too much). Finally, water again
gently but thoroughly once all the soil is in place.
2.7 Mulching:
Helps save water and promotes healthy root growth. Placing mulch
like wood chips around the base of your tree has many benefits,
from reducing temperature,to keeping out weeds, to protecting
from moisture extremes.
2.8 Water Properly Until Established:
The most important job you will have after planting is to keep
plants and trees well-watered until established. This can take
weeks to months, to even a year or more in some cases. But don‘t
worry. You can put this part of the process on autopilot.

The key to proper watering and establishment is slow and deep

irrigation. It‘s not practical to do that by hand. The only way to
establish trees properly through irrigation is with soaked hoses or
drip irrigation.
Page | 17

The slow and deep irrigation allows the soil around the roots to
saturate, so the roots have time to absorb the moisture, while
avoiding excess runoff.
2.9 Fertilizing:

All energy should be concentrated on root development first. Adopt the

Walk-before-you-run approach.
While all the above steps are essential, your active engagement in
monitoring newly planted trees for signs of distress over time will be the
ultimate deciding factor in your tree planting success. Make any necessary
adjustments in real-time, and you can likely reverse a potentially
downward spiral into a tree that will live a happy and very long life.

Benefits of Planting Trees

Most often we plant trees to provide shade and beautify our landscapes.
These are great benefits of planting treess.
3.1 Social Benefits
. Trees make life nicer. It has been shown that spending time among trees
and green spaces reduces the amount of stress that we carry around with
us in our daily lives.
. Hospital patients have been shown to recover from surgery more quickly
when their hospital room offered a view of trees.
. Children have been shown to retain more of the information taught in
schools if they spend some of their time outdoors in green spaces.
3.2 Communal Benefits

. Eventhough you may own the trees on your property your

neighbours may benefit from them as well.
. Through careful planning trees can be an asset to your entire
community.
. Tree lined streets have a traffic calming effect, traffic moves more
slowly and safely.

3.3 Environmental Benefits

. Trees offer many environmental benefits.
. Trees reduce the urban heat island effect through evaporative
cooling and reducing the amount of sunlight that reaches parking lots
and buildings.
. This is especially true in areas with large impervious surfaces,
such as parking lots of stores and industrial complexes.
Page | 19
. Trees give off oxygen that we need to breathe.
. Trees reduce the amount of stormwater runoff, which reduces
erosion and pollution in our waterways and may reduce the
effects of flooding.
3.4 Economic Benefits
.Well placed trees can reduce your cooling costs in the summer
by shading the south and west sides of your home. If deciduous
trees are used they will allow the sun to pass through and warm
your home in the winter.

.Evergreen trees on the north side of your home and shrubs

around the foundation of your home can act as a windbreak to
reduce the cooling effects of winter winds.

.The value of a well landscaped home with mature healthy trees

can be as much as 10% higher than a similar home with no or
little landscaping. (Topping will reduce the value of your trees)

COMMUNITY SERVICE
Page | 21 4.1 Tree planting rules
The future health of a tree is dependent on proper care at planting time.
The following 10 rules sum up the important steps in tree planting.
> Rule 1
Select the right tree for the site. It is important to match your planting
site and its conditions with a tree species' shade, moisture, and soil
preferences.
> Rule 2
Provide good pre-planting care. Keep trees shaded, cool, and moist
before planting. Be gentle when handling the root ball.
> Rule 3
Remove all labels, wires, etc. from the tree's stem.
> Rule 4
Dig a shallow hole, as wide as possible. The hole should be at least 3X
the root ball diameter, bowl-shaped, and as deep as the root ball is high
or 1- 2" shallower. The root ball should be placed on undisturbed soil,
with the root collar at or just above the level of the surrounding soil. On
a poorly- drained, compacted, or wet site, leave at least 1/3 of the root
ball above grade and mound backfill up to the root collar.
> Rule 5
Remove burlap, pots, wire baskets, etc. from the root ball. Removing
these materials with the root ball in the hole minimizes root system
disturbance. Wire baskets can be cut and pulled away in pieces. If you
can't remove burlap because the ball is loose, at least slit and peel it
back below the soil surface.
> Rule 6
Backfill with native soil--no amendments. Don't mix in organic
Page | 22
matter, fertilizer, sand, etc. Only add organic matter like peat
moss (up to 25% of soil volume mixed in thoroughly) if you have
a very poor soil (clay sub- soil, rock).
> Rule 7
Do not fertilize for 1-2 years or cutback crown. Fertilizer at
planting time stimulates root rots. Prune dead, broken, or poorly
placed branches or double leaders. Don't cutback healthy, live
branches to reduce the crown.
Rule 8
Water the entire root zone about once a week for the first year
or two. Do not water-log soil. Most of the tree's roots are within
the top 6- 12" of the soil, so apply water at a slow rate to the soil
surface--don't inject it with a water lance.
> Rule 9
Mulch. The most important thing you can do for any tree, next to
watering, is applying an organic matter mulch (chips, clippings,
bark, etc.) at a 2-4" depth overmuch of the tree's root zone. Start
with a circle of mulch 3X root ball diameter and extend it as the
tree grows. The wider the area the better. This reduces
compaction, keeps mowers away, eliminates grass
competition, and keeps the soil cooler and moister.
>Rule 10
Wrap and stake only if necessary. Only wrap a tree's stem if sun
hits its trunk in winter. Overlap paper wrap from the bottom up.
Leave wrap on only in the winter for 1 or 2 seasons. Stake a tree
if it is large and will catch wind, or if it is very small and might be
trampled. Stake loosely, using carpet strips, canvas straps, etc.,
and remove stakes after 1-2 years.

CHAPTER 5
Activities Conducted
5.1 Clean up a local park
A park that is clean and well-maintained offers a safe and
enjoyable place for people to visit for hiking, Picnicking, sporting
Page | 28
activities, or just relaxing. Keeping parks clean can be every
visitor‘s job, which helps contribute to a more welcoming
park atmosphere.

5.2 Planting flowers in public area

Planting flowers is very important in establishing natural beauty

in today‘sworld. Most people can never understand the
importance because of their busy schedule but flowers are a
great source of food to insects and birds indirectly it affects
humans as well because flowers can be used as medicines too.

Problems faced during planting flowers. No one was bothered by

how the area looked; they were so busy in their work that they
did not even notice the newly planted flowers, few of them were
destroyed within hours.

5.3 My experience
The place was ugly before the flowers were planted. Small things can
change the look of an area. More greenery there is the breath-taking
Page | 29 location feels. Planting a few flowers helps the place keep cleaner, as
noone wants to destroy a beautiful looking area. No one spit or throw
garbage near a beautiful flowered plant.
CHAPTER 6
Page | 30 CONCLUSION

I had definitely learned how to be more patient and be

more productive in community service. The journey from the right
beginning that is deciding how can I help the community / society to be
a better place, what activities will be well suited to my surrounding
keep all the facts in mind I figured out few activities Plantation in public
parks, Cleaning up local parks.
Each activity had its challenges and impressive outcome. The
satisfaction the activity provided me was at a different level. Helping
out society truly set a different mind-set. The day I started the project,
it changed my view towards society. Seeing the park clean and tidy
after I finished my work gave me a great feeling. I planted flowery
plants which gave the public park a different look.

I am looking forward to helping society in as many ways as possible. As

we know small changes make a huge difference. I will even promote the
idea of community service as a general responsibility for all.
