SUMMARY
Extensive testing of SKF’s compact taper roller bearing has
proven the design’s improved performance when compared
with conventional designs incorporated into units used in
railway applications. The new compact tapered bearing unit
(CTBU) design has fewer components and also offers the
opportunity for mass and space savings. In addition, there are
the beneÞts of housing design simpliÞcations that include a
shorter axle length and limited axle bending.
The CTBU concept means that operators need to carry out
less maintenance, with an impact on overall costs. The
concept also provides higher safety and reliability. In addition
the CTBU is equipped with advanced component technologies
that allow railway operators time to react if severe bearing
