Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel has revealed that the referee admitted that he
should have awarded another penalty against Arsenal. The Gunners ended the first
leg of the Champions League quarter-final tie with a 2-2 draw at the Emirates
Stadium.
However, Tuchel and his Bayern players were left incensed after seeing their
appeals for a second penalty waved away. In the 67th minute, with Bayern leading,
Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya made a short pass to centre-back Gabriel Magalhaes,
only for the Brazilian to pick up the ball and retake the set piece.

Referee Glenn Nyberg had already blown his whistle for the game to continue before
Raya made his initial pass. Despite protests from Bayern, the official did not
point to the spot and give the German side a chance to extend their lead but was
aware of his mistake, according to Tuchel in his post-match interview.
"I think the referee did not have the courage today to give a deserved penalty in a
bit of a crazy and awkward situation," he told TNT Sports. "But he admitted on the
pitch that he saw the situation and that a quarter-final is not enough for him to
give a penalty for a kid's mistake."
"He admitted he knew about the mistake the player made and that is a bit
frustrating," Tuchel added, as reported by the Mirror. "It was from the goalkeeper,
he was whistling and the keeper passed to the central defender...I am not sure
which one it was but he touched the ball with his hand because he thought it is not
in the game, but it was in the game.
"The referee admitted it was in game and it was a handball. It was not worth
looking at the mistake which is very frustrating for our players and leaves us
angry."
TNT pundit Rio Ferdinand was left baffled by the referee's refusal to award Bayern
a second penalty, exclaiming: "It's a pen. Oh my gosh, how can that not be given? I
was so adamant that Saka's one was, I am even more for this. It's unbelievable. How
can he blow the whistle like that and not give that"
Arsenal also argued to be given a penalty after Saka was brought down by Bayern
goalkeeper Manuel Neuer. Post-match, Gunners goal scorer Trossard commented on the
incident: "On the pitch, it looked like a penalty to me. I haven't seen the replay
but for me, it looked like there was clear contact but I will have to wait until
after to see it again."
