 PARAPHASING:

Two techniques for Paraphrasing

+ tell-a-friend method

+ chunking method

Tell-a-friend Methods: focus on the meaning of the passage and find a completely new way to explain it.
Original: Leadership by birth order apparently holds for both genders. Studies have found that female
executives are much more likely to be firstborns than later-borns.

Paraphase: Not only firstborn men, but also firstborn women are more likely to be executives than
people who are later born

Chunking method: divide the original into phrases, or “chunks” and concentrate on explaining the
meaning of each chunk.

 SUMMARY

Orginal: Research is an important part of many assessment types. When gathering research material you
must be able to evaluate it for relevance to your topic and your focus. You will need to analyse the
material for its facts, arguments, and opinions; select material that is directly applicable to your
research, and record the publication details so that you can acknowledge your sources and include them
in your reference list (SACE BOARD of SA 2009,p.1)
