Board of Executives Meeting Discussion

In our Friday afternoon lesson we will have a Board meeting discussion. The following roles
are:
1. You are the Human Resource Manager who values the rights to protect employees
and is committed to the well being of staff. (Sacha)
2. You have been the CEO of the company for 20 years and have a more autocratic
leadership style. You are a decisive decision maker, with profits as your underlying
objective. You can be change adverse.Your shareholders want you to be a better
communicator (listener!) to help move the company forward with AI trends. (Emilie)
3. CSR Manager who oversees the company's social responsibility objectives (ELENA)
4. Chief Technology officer who wants to implement AI within the company and insists
on the reliability and objectivity of AI (Nafis)

Scenario:

You have received an email with the subject line: Hiring Decisions with AI

We are considering implementing an AI system to assist in the hiring process.

Sometimes we receive up to 200 applications during our recruitment process. We
can purchase an AI tool that will analyse resumes, conduct online assessments, and
use predictive algorithms to shortlist candidates for job interviews. We will have a
discussion on whether the AI system will help remove biases and ensure a fair
evaluation based on skills and qualifications.

Shareholders meeting:

The idea was discussed at our shareholder meeting and we have been tasked with
preparing a report considering the perspectives of each Department manager before
making a decision. The shareholders believe the AI system unintentionally exhibits
biases in its decision-making process. It can disproportionately favour candidates
from certain demographics while excluding qualified individuals from
underrepresented groups. The shareholders want us to reassure them that there will
be fairness in an AI-driven hiring process.

We will meet Friday afternoon at 3:30 to discuss. Please be prepared to give a short
speech (1-3min) to share your perspective whilst also considering the counter
argument. End with a recommendation and limitation. After listening to each of the
speeches, we will open the floor for questions and further discussion before voting
on a final decision.
To prepare:

1. Read topic 5.9 to understand and use the vocabulary associated with MI
2. Use AI to help you understand your perspective and possible arguments for
and against.
3. Create a speech “in your own words” to communicate your perspective (1-3
mins) mentioning a counter argument, recommendation and limitations)
4. Be prepared for the debate by researching the other perspectives. This will
make for a richer debate.
