1. DESIGN

1.1 Design Flow

Establish contributors
Assign daily demand
Calculate average daily flow (ADF)

Any allowance for infiltration? (usually 15%)

Any allowance for future?

Select method to determine peak factor:-

Harmon:
Count population (in thousands)
Calculate peak factor
PWWF = ADF x infiltration x future x PF

Unit flow method:

Peak factor is 2.5
Count population
Look up attenuation factor
PWWF = ADF x infiltration x future x 2.5 (PF) x
attenuation factor

Any point sources?

Does the point source affect the peak?

1.2 Pump Station Volume

Determine pumping rate:

Calculate velocity in rising main (min 100mm NB)
If velocity is less than 0.7m/s then set pumping rate to
achieve 0.7m/s
If velocity is greater than 0.7m/s and less than 2.5m/s
then the pumping rate = PWWF
If velocity is greater than 2.5m/s then choose larger
rising main.

Determine working volume (TWl-BWL)
Set number of starts per hour (Min 2 and Max 6)
Volume = 0.9 x pumping rate (l/s) ÷ No of starts
Determine sump volume
Allow emergency storage above TWL (refer local
authority)
Allow submergence below BWL (refer pump
manufacture)
Sump volume = working volume + emergency volume +
submergence
Sump geometrics
TWL – BWL = 300mm – 400mm
Any benching at base on sump?
Controls
Have you set pump stop / start levels?
Have you set inlet / outlet and overflow levels?

1.3 Pump Selection

What type of pump?
Submersible
Above ground self priming
What type of impeller? Standard, cutter, grinder
What type of lifting mechanism? Rails, wire
Position of quick coupling. Below water level or above water
level?

1.4 Other

Have you considered access road?

Have you installed a standpipe for washing the pump?
Have you considered a lifting gantry?
Have you considered sit lighting?
Have you considered fencing?
