Theory Of Operation

The Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS) is an electrical shunt with a microprocessor that is mounted in-line
with the negative Battery Cable. The IBS monitors the current flow and voltage. The IBS also has a built
in thermistor that calculates the Battery temperature. The microprocessor uses this data to calculate
Battery state of charge, Battery internal resistance, charge received, charge delivered, and time in
service. This information is reported through a LIN BUS circuit to the Body Control Module (BCM). The
BCM broadcasts the information to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) over the CAN BUS.

When Monitored

This diagnostic runs continuously when the following conditions are met:

The ignition is on for greater than five seconds.

The battery voltage is between 10.0 and 16.0 volts.

Set Condition

The Body Control Module (BCM) does not receive LIN Bus messages from the Intelligent Battery
Sensor (IBS) for greater than 180 milliseconds.

Default Action

Functionality related to the IBS will not update.

Possible Causes

FUSED B(+) CIRCUIT OPEN OR SHORTED TO GROUND

GROUND CIRCUIT OPEN

LIN BUS CIRCUIT OPEN

INTELLIGENT BATTERY SENSOR (IBS)

Diagnostic Test

NOTE: Some procedures may require a OEM scan tool

and/or OEM software to complete diagnosis or repair.

For complete wiring diagram refer to:

1. CHECK FOR AN ACTIVE DTC

NOTE: Visually inspect the negative battery cable

connection to the Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS) for any
damage or corrosion. Repair as necessary.

1. Turn the ignition on.

2. With the scan tool, read DTCs.

Does the scan tool display this DTC as active?
Yes
1. Go To 2
No
1. Test complete. The condition or conditions that originally set this DTC are not present at this
time. Using the wiring diagrams as a guide, check all related splices and connectors for
signs of water intrusion, corrosion, pushed out or bent terminals and correct pin tension.
2. Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST .

2. CHECK THE (A916) FUSED B(+) CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN

1. Turn the ignition off.

2. Disconnect the IBS harness connector.

3. Using a 12-volt test light connected to ground, check the (A916) Fused B(+) circuit.
Does the test light illuminate brightly?
Yes
1. Go To 3
No
1. Repair the open or short in the (A916) Fused B(+) circuit.
2. Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST .

3. CHECK THE VOLTAGE OF THE (D401) LIN BUS CIRCUIT

1. Turn the ignition on.

2. Measure the voltage between ground and the (D401) LIN Bus circuit in the IBS harness
connector.
Is the voltage above 5.0 volts?
Yes
1. Replace the Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS) in accordance with the Service Information.
Refer to SENSOR, INTELLIGENT BATTERY (IBS), REMOVAL .
2. Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST .
No
1. Go To 4

4. CHECK THE (D401) LIN BUS CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN

1. Turn the ignition off.

2. Disconnect the BCM E harness connector.

3. Measure the resistance of the (D401) LIN Bus circuit.

Is the resistance below 5.0 Ohms?
Yes
1. Replace the Body Control Module (BCM) in accordance with the Service Information. Refer
to MODULE, BODY CONTROL, REMOVAL .
2. Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST .
No
1. Repair the open in the (D401) LIN Bus circuit.
