1. What is a Coast?
A coast is a place where the land meets the ocean and sea.
World's largest cities are on the coast. There are ports, hotels, and resorts all develop
near the coast.
Natural Harbours – The parts of coast acts as natural harbours so it is easy and best
place to launch boats and ships. Example – Sydney in Australia and Vancouver in
Canada
Estuaries - An estuary is where a river widens out as it reaches the sea. Estuaries are
excellent site for ports because it is sheltered from large and strong tides of sea.
Biggest ports in world are – Dublin in Ireland, Buenos Aires in Argentina
River Crossing – Villages are developed into towns and cities near rivers as they can
be easy crossed by bridges. Examples – London, Lisbon and Montreal.
Important Resources and Industries – Cities grew because valuable resources were
found near these coasts. Example – Gold were found near SFO , USA. Newcastle, AU
is developed because of coal nearby.
Holiday Resorts – Beautiful sandy beaches near coasts were main toursits attraction.
Many holiday resorts are build along the coast – Miami in Florida.
