The Origin of Species

The world’s ecological system is still diverse and it can be proven through the
various creatures that moves within it. However these creatures, when being looked
closer, are also distinct to one another. Despite being the same creature, they are being
distinguished according to their species. Hence, the origin of these distinctions is
important to be discovered as it will help people to understand more how the animals of
the wild manage to survive. Hence, their evolution is very important to be tackled.
On the documentary, Carrol was narrating how the Grants were able to discover
the reason behind the evolution of the different species of flinches. On their study, the
Grants found out that flinches’ distinction varies according to their beak and size.
Apparently, these birds are in need of evolution in order to survive and adapt to their
changing environment. Aside from mating, the flinches also evolves due to the available
food in their areas. In one of the Grants’ exploration, they found out that the type of food
affects the population of the species. When vines covered the area where flinches lived,
only the flinches with smaller beaks reproduces rapidly and live since they are able to
eat the available food. Despite that, they found out that the beaks of the flinches are
becoming larger over time. Flinches only mate with flinches of the same size and beak.
Hence, they don’t interbreed. They stop breeding after forming new species. Therefore,
the geography and ecology affects and the reason behind these evolution.
The documentary is very informative and educational. It could answer several
questions out of curiosity. In fact, it could be a basis of how humans evolve over time.
Moreover, its context is not just controversial but critical as many species of birds are
dying due to the rapidly changing environment. Hence, actions should be taken as a
result of the awakening caused by the documentary. In terms of direction, the director is
knowledgeable about the documented topic since the consultants are actually experts.
Therefore, the documentary became very accurate and relevant to viewers. However, it
will be better if the other factors that affects the breeding and evolution of birds (not just
flinches) were discussed.
After watching the documentary, I found it commendable and worth sharing as
the question were answered – ecology and geography causes creatures to evolve. It
promotes respect to the changing and evolution of the other wild biological component
of the biodiversity so that they could continue to breed and increase their population to
make sure that the biodiversity in the plant will be high.
