1.0. SCOPE

1.1. This document describes the application of the Hydrostatic Pressure Testing at shop &
sites for 20” & 24” Spool.

2.1. REFERENCE DOCUMENTS

 ASME Section VIII Div.1

 ASME B 31.3
 Client Specification

3.0. DEFINITION

3.1. TEST PRESSURE- The actual pressure at which the test is to be carried out as per client
requirement.
3.2. QI- Quality Inspector

4.0. PROCEDURE
4.1. Responsibilities
4.1.1. The concerned Workshop Forman is responsible for the preparation of the test items for
Pressure Testing.
4.1.2. The designated Quality inspector (QI) is responsible for witnessing the items being tested.
QM is responsible to arrange visit AI/TPI/Client to witness the Hydrostatic Testing if
necessary.
4.1.3. The Workshop In charge is responsible to ensure that, only essential personnel are
present in the work area during the test. The work area shall be suitably cordoned or
isolated such that unrelated personnel do not stray into it.
4.1.4. The designated QI is responsible to verify that the pipe spools are free of damage and
other imperfections.
4.1.5. The designated QI after completing the inspection, releasing the item for Pressure
Testing.
4.1.6. Safety Officer shall check violation of any safety requirements in the test area.

4.2. Personnel Qualification

Personnel conducting the test and recording test results shall be suitably qualified in
terms of experience and training to properly conduct the test and records results.

4.3. Equipment

4.3.1. The Test equipment shall be in accordance with the applicable Client’s Specification and
shall be adequate to provide necessary Test Pressure at a safe rate of increases.
4.3.2. All components of the test system shall be rated to perform satisfactory at minimum test
pressure.
4.3.3. A temperature measuring device shall be used to measure the metal temperature during
the test and which shall be entered in the report.
4.3.4. A small liquid relief valve set to 1-1/3 times the test pressure is recommended for the
pressures test system.

4.4. Preparation for Pressure test

4.4.1. Vent shall be provided at one of the end connections to purge possible air pockets while
spool is filling.
4.4.2. The QI shall verify that all the connections are accepted before taking up the item for the
test.
4.4.3. Pressure gauge shall be graduated over a range of about double the intended maximum
test pressure, but in no case shall the range be less than 1.5 times and nor more than 4
times the test pressure.
4.4.4. The pressure gauge used in the test system shall be positioned such that it visible to the
operator during the test and the pressure achieved can be read off easily.
4.4.5. The quality of test fluid (potable water) shall be maximum 30ppm of Chloride
4.4.6. The temperature of the test fluid shall be checked. It is recommended, that the metal
temperature during test be maintained at least 30ºF(17°C) above minimum design metal
temperature but need not exceed 120ºF(49°C).
4.4.7. It is also described that the steel temperature should not be too close to atmospheric dew
point so that the results may not be hampered by condensation of moisture from the
atmosphere. Wherever possible, steps shall be taken to ensure that the items are
provided with an adequate cover such that the metal temperature does not rise
significantly.
4.4.8. The test pressure for Hydrostatic Test shall be communicated to the persons conducting
the test by their respective discipline supervisor who references the same from the
applicable reference document and drawings.

4.5. Filling with test fluid

4.5.1. The test fluid is usually filled from the one end of the spool, progressing towards the vents
on completion. The rate of flow should be such that it does not cause excessive bubbles
which may be entrapped in recesses.
4.5.2. The vents shall be closed after filling the vessel completely and ensuring that no air is left
entrapped within the test system.

4.6. Testing
4.6.1. After filling the test system with fluid, the pressure is gradually increased. The test
pressure is determined from the fabrication General Arrangement Drawing (approved for
construction issue). In cases where this is not available the test pressure shall be verified
from equipment data sheets or Client instruction or other equivalent documentation by
the QI and communicated to the discipline supervisor as applicable. The pressure is
increased to around 25-50% of the test pressure. The connections are then checked for
leak tightness.
4.6.2. If leaks are observed, the system is de-pressurized and the leaking points attended
suitable (by tightening or by replacing gaskets if necessary).
4.6.3. After confirming that there is no leak, the pressure is gradually increased to the test
pressure. The QI shall record the start time of the test.
4.6.4. The test pressure shall be held at this point to verify that it is stabilized. If the client has
specified a minimum holding time, this shall be maintained. The start of such holding
period shall commence from the time that stabilization has been achieved. The pressure
shall be maintained for minimum 15 minutes.
4.6.5. After the holding time is elapsed, the pressure is reduced (by bleeding the test system) to
the inspection test pressure. At this point, the QI shall inspect the vessel to detect leaks.
All joints and connections shall be checked visually.
4.6.6. If leaks are detected at flanges/connection, the pressure shall be reduced to 0(zero), the
concerned flanges/connections are tightened and retested.
4.6.7. If leaks are detected at weld/permanent connection, the test item is considered to be
failed in the test and suitable repairs shall be undertaken in accordance with approved
repair procedures.
4.6.8. If there is leak observed outside the test system (such as at a pump connection or outlet
valve) and it is conclusively verified that no leaks are present on the test item, the
pressure may be increased as necessary before or during the holding time to verify to
ensure that pressure during the holding time and/or the inspection time does not become
less than the specified.
4.6.9. Test temperature and pressure will be recorded through a chart recorder.
4.6.10. After completing the test, the test fluid shall be drained off from the test system and the
system shall be cleaned and isolated. While draining, care shall be exercised to ensure
that adequate venting is incorporated to prevent back-pressure.
4.6.11. After the system has been drained off, overall dimensions shall be checked.
4.6.12. Inspects the parts using applicable initial acceptance standards.
4.6.13. After the completion of the test, the QI shall prepare the Hydrostatic Test Report.
4.6.14. If the test is satisfactory, the QI shall prepare the Hydrostatic Test Report as per paragraph
4.7 of this Procedure.

4.6.15. After completing the test, the test fluid shall be drained off from the test system and the
system shall be cleaned and isolated if called for by the Client’s Specification. While
draining, care shall be exercised to ensure that adequate venting is incorporated to
prevent back-pressure.

4.7. Reporting
4.7.1. Other formats as may be approved or specified in Contractual Specification may be used
as alternatives but as a minimum, the following items shall appear.
 Any special treatment imparted on the test fluid
 Calibration reference of the pressure indicating gauges
 Date and time of the test
 MAWP (Maximum Allowable Working Pressure– designed)
 Provision for acceptance endorsement by QI and the AI/TPI/Client
 Test Pressure
 Test temperature of fluid
 Test temperature of metal

5.0. RECORDS
The Pressure Test reports shall form part of the final project quality documentation.

6.0. REPORTING FORMAT
