Hydrostatic Pressure
Testing
Rosemount Global Procedure
Abstract: This procedure specifies the process for hydrostatic pressure testing pressure transmitters,
pressure gauges, remote seal systems, guided wave radar transmitters, non-contacting radar
transmitters, and thermowells.

This test is conducted to ensure the pressure boundary of the assembly is leak tight. The hydrostatic test
pressure is applied at a level 1 to 1.5 times greater than the maximum working pressure of the
instrument. The remote seal system is applicable only if the remote seals have a pipe fitting on the
process side.
This procedure documents the global standard process. Performance specifications are not included in
this document and can be found in the Product Data Sheet or Reference Manual. The Hydrostatic testing
for Rosemount products meets the intent of the ASME B31.3 process piping and ASME B31.1 power
piping standards.
The test involves the use of very high pressure. Accordingly, the following precautions must be observed.
3.1 The pressure equipment used shall have an accuracy of +/- 1.0% of reading or better and is
calibrated at prescribed intervals.
3.2 The pressurizing fluid for hydrostatic testing shall be deionized water, a deionized water/alcohol
mixture or Novec Engineered fluid unless otherwise specified. Note: Deionized water and Novec
engineered fluid contain minimal chlorides and as such the chloride content after hydrostatic
testing is not measured. The testing practices are consistent with ASME B31.1 2018
using deionized water, high purity steam condensate, or potable water in decreasing order of
4.1 Connect product to the high-pressure plumbing. For differential (DP) models, connect the high and
low side process connections together so the pressure will be applied to both sides simultaneously.
For liquid level models, the mating ASA Lap Flange fixture must be used.
CAUTION: Be sure the flange/fixture is adequate for the test pressure used.
4.2 Begin filling the pressure plumbing and product flange/connection with water. Dry off excess
water from the product.
5.1 Testing to be performed per Rosemount Controlled Manufacturing Procedure # 60000301. For
Gage Pressure (GP) or Absolute Pressure (AP) products, apply pressure to the remote seal only. For
DP transmitters with 2 remote seals or 1 remote seal and 1 flange process connection, apply equal
pressure to both sides.
5.2 Begin filling the pressure system with water. Dry off any excess water.
5.3 Apply the pressure according to Rosemount Controlled Manufacturing Procedure.
5.4 Hold pressure for 10 minutes (minimum).
5.5 While pressure is applied, observe the product, remote and capillary for a pressure leak as
indicated by a fluid leak. Units displaying a pressure leak must be repaired and retested.
5.6 Vent pressure to 0 psig.
5.7 Remove the remote seal system from the plumbing and wipe dry with clean paper or cloth. Dry the
inside of the remote and flange (if differential transmitter with 1 remote seal) with alcohol, dry
filtered air, or nitrogen purged gas.
5.8 Visually inspect the remotes, capillary and product (does not require any disassembly of the
remote seal assembly or transmitter).
5.9 Indicate acceptance on travel card.
6. THERMOWELLS
6.1 Hydrostatic Pressure Testing is a customer specified option for Thermowells provided by
Rosemount. Thermowell model numbers with option are externally hydrostatic pressure
tested.
6.2 All
ecified on Rosemount Drawing 00114-2000. Water is to be certified
before testing to ensure that chloride content is less than 30 ppm.
7.1
option.
7.2 Testing to be performed per Rosemount Controlled Manufacturing Procedure # 90004978.
7.3 Test pressure to be held for minimum of 10 minutes.
9. ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA
There shall be no evidence of leaks, cracks, and structural damage as identified by a visual inspection.
Calibration, which may be performed subsequent to this test, will be a final test to demon strate whether
the internal pressure boundary is intact, and the transmitter is operable. Note: Calibration and
subsequent processes do not impact the pressure boundary of the device.
