STANDARD HYDROSTATIC TEST FOR CODE ITEMS

1.0 PURPOSE.
To assure that each Code Item being pressure tested by Trekant Grupo Industrial is subjected to a
hydrostatic test pressure which at every point in the Item is at least equal to 1.3 times the
maximum allowable working pressure multiplied by the lowest ratio (for the materials of which
the vessel is constructed) of the stress value S for the test temperature on the vessel to the stress
value S for the design temperature per Section VIII Div 1 UG-99 and per Section I PG-99 equal
to 1.5 times the maximum allowable working pressure to be marked on the vessel multiplied by
the lowest ratio (for the materials of which the vessel is constructed) of the stress value S for the
test temperature on the vessel to the stress value S for the design temperature.
For B31.1 the hydrostatic test pressure at any point in the piping system shall not be less than 1.5
times the design pressure, but shall not exceed the maximum allowable test pressure of any
nonisolated components, such as vessels, pumps, or valves.

2.0 RESPONSABILITY.

2.1 The production supervisor shall be responsible for the performance of the test in
accordance with this procedure.

2.2 Code Items being tested to this procedure shall be positioned and blocked such that they
will not shift or create a safety hazard when filled with water.

2.3 Code Items shall be positioned such that all welded seams and connections are accessible
for visual inspection.

2.4 All flanged and or screwed openings shall be securely tightened prior to applying test
pressure.

2.5 Vents shall be provided at all high points of the Code Item in the position in which it is to
be tested to purge possible air pockets while the item is being filled.

2.6 At least one pressure gage shall be located at the top of the Code Item with no intervening
valves between the Item and the test gage. If the indicating gage is not readily visible to
the operator controlling the pressure applied, an additional indicating gage shall be
provided where it will be visible to the operator throughout the duration of the test.

2.7 The indicating pressure gage shall have dials graduated over a range of double the
intended maximum test pressure, but in no case less that 1 1/2 times nor greater that 4
times the test pressure.

2.8 All gages shall be calibrated in accordance with the requirements of the company’s
Quality Control Manual.

2.9 For ASME Sect VIII Div. 1 it is recommended that the metal temperature during

hydrostatic test be maintained at least 30 °F (17 °C) above the minimum design metal
temperature, but need not exceed 120 °F (48 °C) , to minimize the risk of brittle fracture.
The test pressure shall not be applied until the Item and its contents are at about the same
temperature.

2.10 For ASME Section 1 after a boiler has been completed it shall be subjected to pressure
tests using water at no less than ambient temperature, but in no case less than 70°F
(21°C). At no time during the hydrostatic test shall any part of the boiler be subjected to a
general primary membrane stress greater than 90% of its yield strength (0.2% offset) at
test temperature.

2.11 After filling the Code Item and purging air pockets, the pressure shall be applied until the
required test pressure is attained. The test pressure is that computed by the rules of the
Code and shown in approved fabrication drawings. For B31.1 holding time shall not be
less than 15 Minutes.

2.12 Following the application of the hydrostatic test pressure and after the specified holding
time, an inspection shall be made by the Quality Control Manager, Authorized inspector,
and Customer Inspector, as applicable, of all welded joints and connections. This
inspection shall be made at a pressure not less than the test pressure divided by 1.3 for
Section VIII Div I, 1.5 for Section I and for B31.1 design pressure. Except for leakage
that might occur at temporary test closures for those openings intended for welded
connections, leakage is not allowed at the time of the required visual inspection.

2.13 Leakage from temporary seals shall be directed away so as to avoid masking leaks from
other joints.

2.14 Upon acceptance of the test by the parties involved the Code Item shall be drained and a
nameplate attached, if required.

3.0 REPORT.

3.1 A written report shall be filled out by the Quality Control Manager upon completion of a
satisfactory hydrostatic test.
Use Hydrostatic Test Certificate attached.
