Technical information should always be available to the foremen and mechanics, because their careful
and constant adherence to the instructions is essential to ensure vehicle road-worthiness and safety. In
addition, the normal basic safety precautions for working on motor vehicles must, as a matter of course,
be observed.

2 - Self-diagnosis of airbag system BTU (basic triggering unit) with side airbag
2.1 - Self-diagnosis of airbag system BTU (basic triggering unit) with side airbag
The airbag system contains: Driver's airbag, passenger's airbag, two front belt tensioners, and two front side
airbags. In a crash situation, these are actuated centrally by the airbag control unit (J234) when certain specified
triggering criteria are exceeded.
In addition to using the airbag key switch it is also possible to block or activate the passenger airbag via the
function "adaption" => Page 17 .
If an airbag and/or belt tensioner is triggered, the control unit will record the fault "Crash data stored".
In such cases the control unit for the airbag (J234) must be renewed after
Independent from the nature and intensity of the accident, the airbag control unit sends a "Crash Signal" to the
control unit for the central locking system. This function is a passive safety feature. If an airbag is triggered it
releases the door locks and tailgate lock via the central locking system. The interior light is also switched on.
The "Crash-Signal" must be checked using final control diagnosis => Page 12 .
The control unit detects faults in the airbag system and stores them in a permanent memory.
After the ignition is switched on, the airbag warning lamp (K75) comes on for about 4 seconds and then goes
out again. If it then flashes for a further 12 seconds this indicates that the passenger airbag is blocked.
2 01 - Self-diagnosis
Audi TT 1999 ➤
Body Self-diagnosis - Edition 10.1998
◆ If the warning lamp (K75) does not go out after about 4 seconds, this means that there is a fault in the voltage
supply for the airbag control unit (J234). Interrogate fault memory => Page 4 .
◆ If the warning lamp (K75) goes out and comes on again, this indicates either that the control unit has not
been encoded, that the wrong control unit has been fitted, or that a fault has occurred. Interrogate fault
memory => Page 4 .
Important
Wiring must only be checked by visual inspection.
Never use electrical tests to check or measure continuity in the igniter circuits.
Always switch off ignition before inspecting wiring.

Notes:
◆ Only short-term faults are shown as "sporadically occurring faults" and marked with "/SP" on the display.
◆ In order to eliminate such sporadically occurring faults the fault memory must be erased before repair.
◆ Additional operating instructions can be called up with the fault reader HELP key.

◆ The following is a list of all faults, by fault code number, which can be detected by the -J234 airbag control
unit. Present faults with 5-digit number fault number are printed out only with the printer of V.A.G 1551
switched on.
◆ If a fault is continually present the fault lamp for the airbag system lights up until the fault is rectified and the
fault memory is erased.
◆ If a fault occurs only occasionally or if the fault memory is not erased after the fault remedy has been carried
out, the fault will appear on the display as a "sporadically occurring fault" (SP). On the right of the display
of the V.A.G 1551 a "/SP" appears and the fault light remains on.
◆ If defective components were detected also check wiring to the components for short and open circuits

The new generation central locking system operates via electric motors.
The lock units in the doors (door locks) have two electric motors each; the lock units for the boot lid/tailgate and
tank flap have only one.
The first motor locks the doors and the second activates the deadlock or lock isolating function ("SAFE" func‐
tion). This means that when the door is locked from the outside (door lock, remote) the vehicle is protected
against theft and cannot be unlocked from the inside. The contact switches in the lock units inform the control
unit of the status of the locks.
All the normal convenience functions, the interior lighting control, the security central locking and the anti-theft
alarm with interior monitor can be operated with the electrical central locking system
When the airbag control unit triggers, a signal goes automatically to the central locking control unit, to unlock
the doors, switch on interior lighting and hazard warning lights.
3.3 - System description of anti-theft alarm with Thatcham ATW function (2nd generation)
With the change of model year in the Audi TT (CW 27.01) the anti-theft alarm function (ATW) changes as
follows:
If the vehicle is unlocked manually via the driver's side lock cylinder only the driver door opens and all other
doors, the luggage compartment lid and the tank flap remain locked. Once the driver door has been opened,
the key must be placed in the ignition lock and the ignition switched on within 15 seconds to switch off the anti-
theft alarm, otherwise the alarm will be triggered.
When the ignition is switched on the other doors, the luggage compartment lid and the tank flap are unlocked.
To provide increased anti-theft protection, the ATW is only switched off when the vehicle is unlocked when the
radio remote control fitted as standard is used.

The interior monitor is only available in combination with the anti-theft alarm system (ATW).
The addition of an interior monitor increases the level of protection offered by the ATW.
The interior monitor will set off the ATW alarm if an attempt is made to enter the vehicle.
Function
The central locking control unit -J429 actuates the warning lamps in door. These lamps permit additional interior
monitor diagnosis.
The interior monitor switch is used to switch off the interior monitor manually when locking the vehicle. The
interior monitor should be switched off before locking, if an alarm might be triggered through animals or movable
objects in the vehicle interior. For this purpose, the ignition key must be removed from the ignition switch after
switching off and the driver's door must be open. Then the button is to be actuated and the vehicle to be locked.
With interior monitor switched off the LED comes on if the driver's door is open, but only for up to max. 10
minutes. If the driver's door is closed and re-opened, without activating the ATW, the LED will come back on.
For all tests, it should be remembered that the system requires a waiting time of at least 30 seconds if the
vehicle is locked. Protected by copyright. Copying for private or commercial purposes, in part or in whole, is not

The ultrasonic sensor for ATW -G209, located behind the interior light, monitors the interior and sends the
monitoring signal on to the central locking control unit -J429.
If the monitoring signal changes, the central locking control unit -J429 triggers the alarm.
The sensor module is equipped with comprehensive self-diagnostic features. If malfunctions occur in system
components, fault codes are stored in fault memory of control unit. The faults can be read out using the V.A.G
1551 or V.A.G 1552 fault reader and with VAS 5051.
50 01 - Self-diagnosis
Audi TT 1999 ➤
Body Self-diagnosis - Edition 10.1998
A new interior monitoring system has been developed for the Audi TT Roadster, especially suitable for con‐
vertibles.
The transmit/receive module -G303 is located between the front seat in the centre console, below the handle
recess of the handbrake lever in position -1- and can be fitted hidden in the centre console.
The interior monitor works in principle like a pulse radar. The demand on the system is a sharply defined
theoretical "protective sphere" in a hemispheric dome shape, penetration of which is at all times recognised.
This sends an alarm signal to the CL control unit and triggers the alarm.
Due to the physical properties of the hemisphere, certain areas in the vehicle cannot be monitored, or are
screened by various seat positions.
Metallic objects in the area of the sensor module screen off the microwaves. This can result that in certain areas
(behind metallic objects) no triggering of the alarm is possible, or in extreme cases, no triggering of the alarm
is carried out.
If the monitoring signal changes, the central locking control unit -J429 triggers the alarm.
The sensor module is equipped with comprehensive self-diagnostic features. If malfunctions occur in system
components, fault codes are stored in fault memory of control unit. The faults can be read out using the V.A.G
1551 or V.A.G 1552 fault reader as well as VAS 5051.
Test requirements:
Notes:
◆ If the display remains blank, check voltage supply to V.A.G 1551 according to current flow diagram.
◆ Additional operating instructions can be called up with the fault reader HELP key.
◆ The ⇒ key is used for the continuation of the program sequence.
