Energy is the ability to do work

Energy comes in different form

s:

 Heat (thermal)

 Light (radiant)

 Motion (kinetic)

 Electrical

 Chemical

 Nuclear energy

 Potential(Gravitational & Elastic)

 Sound energy

We use energy for everything we do, from making a

jump to sending astronauts into space.

1
H ea tenergy is a degree of warm or hotness in
anobject. We can feel heat by touching a hot obj
ect.

Light e n e r g y is a n i l l u m i n a t i o n f r o m a s o u r c e
oflight this energy enables us to see.

Kinetic energy is an energy produced

bymovement or any kind of motion.

Electrical e n e r g y is a n e n e r g y c r e a t e d b y
hydropower, burning of fuel, solar and is real
lyuseful as it powers most of our things today
.

Chemical energy is energy we get from food a

ndenergy stored in batteries. We use this energy e
veryday in our daily activities.

Nuclear energy is energy obtained from elemen

t s su c h a s p l u t o n i u m a n d u r a n i u m . T h i s e n e r g y i s u
sedmostly to generate electricity.

Potential energy is namely gravitational and

elastic potential energy. Gravitational energy is
energy stored in objects that are raised of the
ground. Elastic energy is stored in objects that a
restretched.

Sound energy is energy that allows us to hear a

ndspeak. It is one of the most important energy a

s it
allows communication.

rnon-renewable

Energy sources are divided into two groups:

 Renewable (an energy source that can be easi

lyreplenished)

 Non-renewable (an energy source that cannot

beeasily recreated)

There are five main renewable energy sources:

 Solar energy from the sun

 Wind energy
 Geothermal energy from heat inside the earth
 Biomass from plants, which includes firewo
odfrom trees, ethanol from corn, and biodie
sel
from vegetable oil
 Hydropower from hydroelectric turbines

There are five main non-renewable energy sources:

 Natural gas
 Coal Fossil fuels
 Petroleum
 Plutonium
 Uranium Radioactive metals

3
Both renewable and non-renewable energy ha
vetheir advantages and disadvantages toward
s oureconomy.

Advantages of renewable energy are:

 Renewable energy is well renewable. Th
ismeans it has infinity of sustainability
andwe will never run out of it.
 Environmental Benefits: It is clean and
results in little to no greenhouse and n
etcarbon emissions
 Reliable Energy Source: Our dependence
onfossil fuels has increased considerably
in
last few decades.
 Economic Benefits: Renewable energy is
also cheaper and more economically sou
ndthan other sources of generated energ
y
.

Disadvantages of renewable energy:

 Reliability of Supply: One shortcoming is th

4
atrenewable energy relies heavily upon the

5
weather for sources of supply: rain, wind, a
ndfuture.
 Difficult to Generate in Large Quantity:
Another disadvantage of renewable energy
isthat it is difficult to generate large amo
u n t of e n e r g y a s t h o s e p r o d u c e d b y c o a l p o
w e r e d pl a n t s .
 Large Capital Cost: Initial investments are
quite high in case of building renewable energy
plants.
 Large Tracts of Land Required: To meet up wi
t h the l a r g e q u a n t i t i e s o f e l e c t r i c i t y p r o d u c e d
by
fossil fuels, large amount of solar panels a
ndwind farms need to be set up.

A d v a n t a g e s o f n o n - r e n e w a b l e e n e r g y are:
 Cheap compared to renewable resources which
expensive.
 Ready available as they are abundant
incountries such as Australia
 Effective as a lot of electricity can
begenerated from fossil.

Disadvantages of non-renewable energy are:

 Not reliable as it takes millions of years to
berestored in the earth.
 Not friendly towards the Environment as it
produces photochemical pollution from nitro
usoxides, and acid rain from sulphur dioxide
.
Burning fuels also produce greenhouse gases
including vast amounts of carbon dioxide th
atmay be causing the phenomenon of global
warming that the planet is currentl

yexperiencing.

Solar energy is a renewable energy that we get fro
mthe sun which is the main source of energy for al
l thliving things on earth. It gives us both heat an
d
light, without it we would not be able to survive o
nthis planet as it will be too cold. Nowadays,
technology is being created to use this energy
toheat our water and generate electricity for u
s athome to replace fossil fuels.

teelectricity for your home. You can choose a ful
l
solar electrical system and completely remove
yourself from the grid (local power company), or
you can choose a partial system using the grid as
aback-up or night time power. In a back-up syste
m,
the grid provides power only if there is no sunshi
neand the batteries that store electricity for such
times are dead. Night time power uses power fro
mthe grid when the sun goes down.

 G e n e r a t eH e a t f o r H o t W a t e r
Solar systems can heat the water in your home to
fill your hot-water tank. These tanks must be well-
insulated to maintain the hot water temperature on
cethe sun goes down. These systems also typically
require a hot-water tank to have a back-up heating
system, but the U.S. Department of Energy estimat
esyour cost savings of water-heating bills to be 50
percent to 80 percent. Some fairly inexpensiv
esystems also heat the water in swimming po
ols.

 Public Uses
More cities are turning to solar-powered road sig
nsto let you know how fast you're going or to con
veymessages of accidents ahead. Companies are u
sing
solar power to provide electronic advertisement
screens. Everywhere you turn, little solar panels a
repopping up to power all kinds of electronic
displays.

 Miscellaneous Uses
Almost every electronic device that contains GPS
o r recei v e s i n f o r m a t i o n v i a s a t e l l i t e , s u c h a s p a g e
rs
and cellphones, use some of the oldest solar
technology around. Satellites that link us to mo
stmass forms of media directly or indirectly use
thesun's rays to power them.
9
 Environment protection
When we heat our homes in the winter or power o
urcars on a daily basis, we are using non-renewa
ble
resources for our energy. These resources release
tons of pollutants into the air that we breathe, and
they are being released by people worldwide.
W h e t h e r y o u b e l i e v e i n g l o b a l w a r m i n go r n o t , t h e s
epollutants are not doing our environment any go
od
and conserving energy in our own home is the on
lyway that we can control our pollutant output. I
f
everyone would conserve energy a bit more there
would be much less pollution in the world, maki
ngit a happier and healthier place.

 Protect Your Wallet

When you conserve energy within your own life, y

ounot only protect the environment that you live i
n
but your wallet is protected as well. Using too mu
chenergy takes a lot of extra cash, and most of us
don’t just have that lying around. Conserving
energy is not only great for the environment, b
utit’s great for your financial life as well.

Fossil Fuels Won’t Last Forever

Remember that the more energy we save today, th
emore is left for our children tomorrow! We will
notbe the only humans to live on this planet, and
our
10
ancestors have done a great job in keeping t
heenvironment in one piece. But with all the
modernization occurring, our generation has seem
edto put environment on the back burner. Using le
ss
energy will mean having to deal with less tox
icgases in the air.

11
 Prevent Energy Crisis
Non-renewable energy is not infinite it’s limited
and if one day it is gone and finished, we will ha
venothing to power our houses, cars or almost
anything. Use less non-renewable energy for futu
reand for the earth.

 So man can enjoy the comfort of this energy

in the future

We enjoy the advantages of this energy but if it

runs out what are we going to do? We should thi
nkof the future generations not just ourselves.

 B u y i n g e n e r g y e f f i c i e n t p r o d u c t s –P u r c h a s i n g
efficient products is one of simple ways
toincrease energy efficiency. New electr
icalappliances such as refrigerators, dry
ers,
washers and other appliances use less energy
incomparison to older ones. While purchasing
those electrical appliances you should look f
orthose rated with ‘energy star’. Smaller ite

 Reduce standby/vampire power –Many of the

appliances which include televisions, lamps
aswell as the phone chargers can continue
consuming energy even when it is in off mode.
You should unplug those appliances when not
use as this will save energy at the same reduce
12
your electric bill up to 20 percent. You should
attach them to a surge protector & turn them o
ffwhen you are not using it or unplug them
completely. This is one effective way
toincrease energy efficiency.

 Turn down thermostat & reduce heat transfer-

Most of the people turn on heater during
months of cold knowing much knowledge that
heat produced up to 30 percent is escaping
through the windows. To save this energy o
necan install energy efficient windows to
minimize heat transfer. During summer, the
sewindows reduce heat transfer into the ho
useminimizing the need of air conditioning.

 Go solar –This is one of the great options to

increase energy efficiency. One can install
solar panels for overall energy grid or just for
the water heater. Depending on where you liv
e,wind energy may be a more preferable optio
n.

 Use a timer to lower thermostat setting at nig

htand when building is unoccupied.

 Restrict hot water use, reduce water temperatu

reand insulate tank.

 Use low-flow shower heads.

 Use high-efficiency, low-wattage bulbs and tu

rnoff lights when not needed.
13
 Improve air tightness with weather strippin
g,caulking, air vapour seals.

 Insist on higher energy efficiency appliances.

 Replace older furnaces with mid- or hig

h-efficiency type.

 Keep vehicles well maintained.

 Select vehicles for fuel economy.

 Use public transit when possible, or car pool.
