CEILING
In this tutorial, you will learn,
•To create a simple ceiling using
Automatic Ceiling tool and Sketch
Ceiling tool
CEILING - EXERCISE
1.Open the tutorial file
‘TutorialCeiling_Input_LearningRevitOnline.rvt’ in Revit.
This project file already contains walls on Level 1.
2.Navigate to Level 1 Ceiling Plan view.
3.Architecture tab -> Build panel -> Ceiling
4.Under Ceilings Panel -> Select Automatic Ceiling
5.From the type selector, select “Compound Ceiling
600x600mm Grid” type.
6.Click in the room between Grid A-1 to B-2.
7.The ceiling is placed.
8.Press Esc to end the tool.
9.Create a section view as shown in the image and go to
the view to view the ceiling.
10.Select the ceiling and adjust its elevation from the
properties palette. Alternatively, use ALIGN (AL) tool to
align the top of the ceiling with the bottom of the beam.
CEILING BY SKETCH - EXERCISE
1. Navigate to Level 1 Ceiling Plan view.

2. Architecture tab -> Build panel -> Ceiling

3. Under Ceilings Panel -> Select Sketch Ceiling

4. From the Draw panel -> select Pick Walls option.

5. Pick walls of the room between the Grids A2- to C-3

6. Use TRIM (TR) tool to adjust the boundary lines. There should not be any
overlaps or open loops. The sketch must be one closed loop.

7. Select one of the sketched boundary lines (pink line). Flip Arrow will be
displayed. Click on this arrow, if necessary, to create the boundary lines at
the inner face of the wall.

8. From the Mode panel -> select Finish.

9. The ceiling has been created.

10. Go to a section view and adjust the elevation of the ceiling by either using
properties palette or using ALIGN tool to align the top of the ceiling with
the bottom of the beam.
ROOF
In this tutorial, you will learn,
•To create a roof by Footprint
•To create a roof by Extrusion
•To create a sloped glazing roof
ROOF BY FOOTPRINT - EXERCISE
1. Open the tutorial file
‘TutorialRoof_Input_LearningRevitOnline.rvt”’ in
Revit. This project file already contains Level 1 ,2
and 3.
2. Navigate to Level 3 Floor plan view.
3. Architecture tab -> Build panel -> Roof Drop Down
-> Roof by Footprint
4. From Draw Panel -> select Pick Walls
5. From the options bar, ensure the Define Slop option
is ticked. Add Overhang value as 1m.
6. From the type selector, select the type of the roof
you would like to create.
ROOF BY FOOTPRINT - EXERCISE
7. Hover your cursor at one of the walls. Revit will show
you a dotted line indicating where the roof will be
placed. Use “TAB” to select the chain of walls as
shown in the image and click when you want to place
the roof at the shown dotted lines.
8. Use TRIM (TR) tool to create a closed loop of the
sketched lines.
9. From Model panel -> Click Finish
10. Go to a 3D View to view the Roof.
11. Select the roof and from the properties palette,
adjust the slope value to be 20 degree and note
how the geometry of the roof changes.
ROOF BY FOOTPRINT - EXERCISE
12. Navigate to Level 3 Floor plan view.
13. Select the roof ->Mode panel -> Edit
Footprint. You will now be able to edit the
sketch.
14. Select the vertical lines of the roof as
shown in the image -> go to options bar
and click on the defines slope option to
remove the slope from those lines.
15. Go to Model panel -> Finish.
16. Go to 3D view to view the roof.
ROOF BY FOOTPRINT - EXERCISE
In order to fill the gap between Level 3 and the Roof, let’s create some walls.
17. Go to Level 3 Floor plan view.
18. Architecture tab -> Build Panel -> Walls. Select Basic Wall Brick – 230mm from the
type selector.
19. From the properties palette, select the Top constraint as Unconnected and the
Unconnected height as 1m. (you can also do this on the options bar).
20. Select the location line as Core Face: Exterior
21. Draw two walls as shown in the image.
22. Go to a 3D view to view the walls.
23. Select both the walls. From Modify Walls Panel -> Select attach Top/Base
24. From the options bar, select Top.
25. Click the Roof.
26. The walls take the shape of the roof and are attached to it.
ROOF BY FOOTPRINT - EXERCISE
27. Navigate to Level 3 Floor plan
view.
28. Select the roof ->Mode panel -
> Edit Footprint. You will now be
able to edit the sketch.
29. Go to Modify panel -> Split
Element Tool (SL) -> Split the
Roof Line as shown in the image Split
(the line towards Grid A). Press
Esc to end the Split tool.
30. Select the Split line and from the
options bar, remove the Define
Slope option.
ROOF BY FOOTPRINT - EXERCISE
31. From the Draw panel -> select
Slope Arrow
32. Create a Slope Arrow from the
end point of the split line
towards its mid point. Repeat it
to create another slope arrow
from other end point as shown in
the image.
33. Select both slope arrows and
from properties palette, Change
the value of “Height offset at
head” parameter to 1m.
34. Mode panel -> Finish.
35. Go to 3D view to see the roof.
ROOF BY EXTRUSION
1. Navigate to Level 3 floor plan view.
2. Draw 1m high Brick-230mm walls on Level 3 as
shown in the image between Grid A2-C3.
3. Go to Architecture tab -> Work Plane -> Ref Plane
4. Draw two reference planes as shown in the image.
Do not worry about their exact position.
5. Using Dimension (DI) tool, create dimension between
the Ref plane and the nearest Grid line.
6. Select the reference plane and adjust the ref plane
position to be 1m from the Grid line.
ROOF BY EXTRUSION
7. Architecture tab -> Build panel -> Roof Drop Down -
> Roof by Extrusion
8. A Work plane dialog box will appear. Select Pick a
Plane option. Say OK.
9. Select the reference plane towards Grid C.
10. Go to View dialog box will appear. Select
Elevation:South and Click Open View.
11. Roof Reference Level and Offset dialog box will
appear. Ensure the settings are Level 3 and Offset
0.
ROOF BY EXTRUSION
12. Using the tools in the Draw panel, draw a
roof line as shown in the image. It should
be a single open line and not a closed
loop.
13. From the type selector, select Generic-
125mm roof type.
14. Model panel -> Finish
15. Go to level 3 floor plan view.
16. Select the roof and drag its edge to meet
the reference plane drawn near Grid A –
as shown in the image.
17. Go to 3D view to view the roof.
18. Select the walls drawn on Level 3. Attach
their top to the Roof.
SLOPED GLAZING - EXERCISE
19. Select the Roof.
20. From type selector select “Sloped Glazing” type.
21. Go to edit type -> Duplicate type -> rename the type
as “Sloped Glazing Roof”.
22. Select “Fixed Distance” as the Grid Layout with Spacing
of 1.5m for both Grid 1 and Grid 2 parameters.
23. Select Rectangular Mullion: 30mm Square for all mullions
as shown in the image.
24. Say Ok.
25. Go to a 3D View to view the Roof.
