Mathematics 10

INTRODUCTION

Mathematics still remains the most feared subject that sometimes students look for a school
that does offer Mathematics and calling this school as a dream school, of course Math is just next to
English. This is true in spite of the many efforts exhausted by our mathematics educators, but this
should not stop Mathematics teachers from exerting means and ways to allow students to befriend and
be comfortable with Math.
This is a big challenge for me as a mathematics teacher; hence, much thought was given
regarding how complex processes, can be simplified to meet the level of the students, what the
learners can absorb with the utilization of interesting and enjoyable activities should be considered.
In my mathematics 10 classes, activities were formed using the active learning strategies,
students were able to learn math through exciting games and puzzles, decoding worksheets and peer
learning. With these students will not be bored that lead them to think that mathematics as a very
difficult subject, and of course employing the reward system, thus this intervention motivates and
stimulates them to do better than what they usually does. Unknowingly little by little my students
befriended and enjoyed learning mathematics. As they say; “MATH is FUN to LEARN”
Aside from using Games and puzzles I also uses cooperative learning wherein students are
group into small or sometimes in a big group for them to interact with the others, for them to share
ideas because as a teacher I believe that in working with the others something is gain, for two heads
are always better that one, and on the same note, when working with others you always learn from the
person you are working with. Thus, in grade 10 mathematics class there is no dull moment because we
are learning in playing with each other.

CONTENT

The learning competencies in grade 10 mathematics are divided into four quarters.
Mathematics ten (10) contains the following learning competencies by quarter;

 Quarter IV Statistics and Illustrates the following measures of Position
 Quartile
 Decile
 Percentile
Probability Calculate a specified measure of position
Interprets Measure of Position
Solves problems involving measures of position
The learning competency for Mathematics 10 was successfully unpacked sometime in
July, 2018, so, from that day forward the mathematics 10 teacher used the unpacked
competency day in, day out, week after week.
The activities given were align to the unpacked competency wherein active learning
strategies are employed, such as MATH O (Mathematics Bingo) was used during drill and
review, CABBAGE RELAY used during unlocking of terms, I HAVE, WHO HAS, was used
during skill booster part (Application) and PASS THE PROBLEM during group work and
many more.
Students were asked to maintain also an interactive notebook were they will record
their written activities such seatwork, and assignment. And a folder for the compilation of
students worksheets.
Within the school year, there are a lot of activities undertaken and participated in by the
grade 10 mathematics students and teachers both school based and in the division;

 Preparation of Teacher made test for every quarter – TOS and Test Questionnaire
starting 3rd Quarter to 4th Quarter were submitted to the Division office for verification
and Evaluation.
 Conducted review and joined Mathematics Olympiad (Oct. 1, 2018) Contestant: Leslie
V. Calamba Coach: Monina L. Esmade 6th Placer
 Conducted practice for DaMath – Contestant: Eman Villegas Coach: Monina L.
Esmade
 Joined the Invitational Division Wide Mathematics Camp (Nov 16 – 18, 2018) with 35
students
 Conducted review and joined MTAP Math Challenge Division Elimination,
Contestants: Leslie V. Calamba, Kim Lloid O. Bagatua, Jonhrey Banglos
 Propose and undertake Income Generating Project for Math Club
 Restore the Math Park (Started repainting the façade assigned to Math Club)

PROBLEM ENCOUNTERED

How can I provide enrichment within the classroom to the students who are ready to think
more deeply about content?
How can I provide slow learners the appropriate remedial activity without compromising the
quality time of instruction for other learners?
How can I remediate slow learners when they keep on making absences?
How can issues regarding absenteeism and reading comprehension skills of students be
addressed?

RECOMMENDATION

 Focus on presenting lessons through significant type of problem solving.

 Have students record their ideas, feedback, points of view, queries, and activity answers in a
spiral notebook / binder.
 Differentiation can happen during discussion by talking about the concept at various levels and
modeling strategies for students
 Employ cooperative learning, peer learning/coaching and the boss and employee during
activities.
 Provide ample number of examples through video presentation and teaching devices and
various problems solving that will enable to develop critical thinking and logical reasoning.
