l§ Practice 1 )
Read the passage carefully and answer the questions that follow.

My parents bought five red cherry shrimps for me

last month as a reward for performing well in my
examinations. I kept them in a small tank by my bedside
and admired them regularly.

My shrimps were very small, with some of them less

than five centimetres long. I fed them every day with
fish flakes or tiny food pellets, especially those with a lot
of plant materials in them. They also ate small pieces of
raw vegetables that I salvaged from my mother's kitchen.

I tried to keep the temperature in the tank low,

below 26 degrees Celsius because they adjusted better
to cooler conditions. I did not have the chance to breed
them yet but such temperatures were also said to be
more conducive for breeding the shrimps. According to
information I found on the Internet, cherry shrimps are
one of the most hardy shrimp species around.

I was very excited when I saw that two of my shrimps

were pregnant a week later. Through their transparent,
reddish bodies, I could see them each carrying ten to
twenty small, white eggs in their bellies. I watched over
them carefully but did not see them lay eggs. However,
after three weeks, I was delighted to see tiny, microscopic
shrimps floating around in my tank.

{S Practice 3 )
Read the passage carefully and answer the questions that follow.

I was at home with my eldest sister and my neighbour

one fine afternoon, an afternoon which I will remember
for the rest of my life. My sister was about 8 years old
and I was only about 6 years old then. The three of us
were playing in our garden that was surrounded by a
fence that had three fence boards missing from it.

While we were playing, I heard something move

among the leaves of the tre.es that grew along the fence.
I ~as not really prepared for what I was about to see
next. It was a fleshy, green, alien-like creature, with
tentacles for hair. It had dark, goldfish-like eyes and long
hands and feet. The most horrifying part of it was its
mouth because it had razor sharp teeth, and there was
saliva running down its bloated cheeks. It was looking
fiercely at me.

It then jumped through the missing boards in the

fence and with its long nails, dug its hands into the
bark of the tree. All the while, it was glaring at me. I
screamed loudly and ran as fast as I could. I cried as my

My sister and neighbour, who did not see the creature,

my eyes, they were scared too. My father came back at
this moment and was surprised to see me in such a state.
He comforted me. From that day onwards, I never dared
to step into the garden alone again.

Some 20 years later, when I was in university, I read

in a magazine about the sighting of a legendary creature
in 1983 in the place where we hod lived. It was the some
year that I encountered the alien creature.
