Drummer’s Assistant: Building A Low-Resolution Prototype
Introduction
Our team's focus is developing a beginner's drum kit, we have initiated the creation of a low-
resolution prototype. This aims to solidify our understanding of the product's functionality to
refine our design further. Through this document, we will delineate our prototyping plan,
organize the brainstormed concepts, detail some of the data collected, discuss our findings,
and propose any necessary adjustments to the current design of our beginner's drum learning
kit.
Concept Sketches

Drummer’s Assistant: Building A Low-Resolution
Prototype
Description:
Instead of long regular wires, this concept presents retractable spring wires that don’t
take up a lot of space.
The LEDs are mounted to the drums via clippers.
The base in the middle contains all the electric components to power the LEDs.
Specifications fulfilled:
Concept 2:

Prototype
The base has a Bluetooth button and a slider which controls the intensity of the light of
LEDs (circles).
The LEDs are attached to the drums either by a suction mechanism or by a
sticky material.

Figure 4: Concept 4
Description:
This design consists of one module that mounts to the center of the drum set.
The LEDS are built into one piece.
6
Drummer’s Assistant: Building A Low-Resolution
Prototype
This design is easier to manufacture due to there being more space for the components
and less complexity, but it will be harder for a drummer to follow it due to the lights
not being on their respective drums.
Portable.
Not interfering with drumming.
Don’t change the tone of the drums.
Provides feedback to the user.
Specifications fulfilled:

They work by individually connecting to the app and will be bought individually.
It is more portable due to their mot being a main control module.
Portable.
Not interfering with drumming.
Don’t change the tone of the drums.
Provides feedback to the user.
Adaptable to any modified drum set.

Description:
Specifications fulfilled:
Does not change the tone of the drum
Concept 7:
Figure 7: Concept 7
Description:
Two clamps (normal drum component clamps) hold each of the parts of the device to
the drum.
Part (1) contains batteries, microcontroller, and a vibration sensor. Part (2) lights up
on the drum in synchronization with the drum
9

The two parts are wired together while part (1) is connected by Bluetooth to the
user’s phone/laptop.

Concept 9:
Figure 9: Concept 9
Description:
This design is easy to install on the sides of the drum with a sticky material from one side
of the device.
The other side is Velcro fasten the 2 layers together.
The switch containing the LEDs and a piezoelectric sensor can be opened so that the
lights can be visible to the user.
The green light indicates a correct hit at the right time, the red one indicates a hit in
the wrong timing, and a piezo sensor that senses the vibration at the beat if it is at the
right/wrong timing.
Portable.
Easily attached and removed.
Does not interfere with drumming.
Does not change the tone of the drum.
Gives feedback.
Connects to phone/laptop.

Description:
This is an updated version of the previous design, with 4 clamps instead of 2 to make the
LED strips more fixed and steady on the rim.
Customer needs fulfilled:
Portable
Not affect the sound of the drum
Easily attached and removed.
Concept 14:
Description:
This device is for the cymbal pole, the LED lights on when you need to hit the cymbal.
It is connected to the controller where all the electronics are needed for it to function.

Patents
https://ppubs.uspto.gov/dirsearch-public/print/downloadPdf/5922981
This is a patent for lights that are installed in the drum set that light up when the drum is
hit, for aesthetic purposes. It is not a learning tool but uses a similar system to sense the
hit and light up.

Drummer’s Assistant: Building A Low-Resolution
Prototype
This patent from 1993 is a learning tool that employs a similar system to ours. Components are
attached to the drum set and use colors to teach visually, however it is not interactive and has
no electrical system. It is not able to provide feedback or teach a beat in real time.
Concept Selection
After finishing the sketches, we need to decide which concepts are the best for us to
develop and for the users to use. And to do that, we compared each concept and assessed them in
a scoring system (selection matrix). And the results were as follows:
The score was determined by adding 1 point for each plus (+) and subtracting 1 point for
each minus (-).
As we can see, concept 5 had the highest score of 9. So, we developed a CAD model
for this concept.

Drummer’s Assistant: Building A Low-Resolution
Prototype
For this design, we compiled a list of materials required to build this model. The list
goes as follows:
Material:
Housing and clamp: Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS), injection molded due to
its relatively cheap production costs and strength.
Components:
We also chose concept 9 because it also has a high score of 7. Its CAD model is shown below.
