(1) Announcement (On-line)
The problem sets are usually assigned on Wednesday and due day is the following
Wednesday. There will be a collection box for Homework in the 4th floor in the
natural science building (507). The homework sheet should be written in English.
If the students are very focused on this subject and have a great achievement,
the percentage can be adjusted appropriately.

Lecture 1. Scientific Thinking!
Use a Scientific Sentence (Proposition)!

Which of the following is a scientific proposition?
The earth is flat.
All crows are black.
Use a Scientific Sentence (Proposition)!
* 과학적 명제
* Scientific proposition
Proposition that can be verified by experiment.
A proposition with the possibility of falsification.
(Can you tell it true or false?)
The scientific fact is always true?
* 과학적 사실
The scientific fact is always true?
* 과학적 사실
* Scientific fact
The fact that many experiments and tests have passed
A proposition with the possibility of falsification.

Quiz
Because the two objects are bound together,
the speed should be greater than 5 m / s and less than 10 m / s. ① 𝑣′ < 𝑉 < 𝑣
①𝑣 =𝑉 =𝑣′
② 𝑣′ = 𝑣 = 𝑉
Discover a contradiction
The importance of Scientific measurement
If you can measure something,
When it can be expressed as a numerical value,
You know something.
Kelvin (1824~1907)
2. The importance of Unit
“ 1 m 야” “ 1 kg 이다..”
3. SI unit system
(2) 물질 질량 (kg)
Matter Mass
SI : Systéme International
[길이]= [Length] = L
[질량]= [Mass] = M
[시간]= [Time] = T
(ex) [Velocity] = L / T
(Dimensional Analysis)
Dimensional analysis can be used as a consistency check.

가속도
(Example)
1 inch = 2.54 cm, convert 15.0 inch to cm.
• 1500 m is ambiguous
• Use 1.5×103 m for 2 significant figures
• Use 1.50×103 m for 3 significant figures
• Use 1.500×103 m for 4 significant figures
2.557 m × 2.45 m = 6.26 m2
The 2.45 m limits your result to 3 significant figures.

(Coordinate Systems)
To describe the motion of an object well, a coordinate system is necessary.

2D Coordinate Systems
Cartesian coordinate system
(Also called rectangular coordinate system)
Polar coordinate system
(when x is nonzero)
Is there any other coordinate system?

5. Components of a Vector
Components of a vector are the projections of the vector
along the x- and y-axes.

7. Simplified Modeling
• Simplification model:
• The details that are not significant in determining the outcome
of the problem are ignored.
• Another example is to assume friction is negligible in many
cases.
