and the real number system.
B. Performance Standards The learner is able to formulate challenging situations involving sets
and real numbers and solve these in a variety of strategies.
C. Learning The learner describes well-defined sets, subsets, universal sets,

IV. PROCEDURES
Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity
A. Presentation the new *Prayer (One student will lead
lesson “Let us all stand up for our prayer, let us the prayer)
pray.” “Our father…”

*Greetings
“Good morning class!” “Good morning, sir
Alex!”
*Checking of attendance
“Who is absent today?” (Students will raised
their hands once called)
“No one is absent today
*Motivation sir”
(The teacher will let the students observe
the pictures and places below and
answer what is asked.)

“Below are some famous characters

and places. Which do you think does
NOT belong in each group? Why?”
TAAL VOLCANO

(Students will raised

“It’s Imus Cathedral,

B. Establishing a purpose for (The teacher will present another picture

the lesson and will let the students answer the guide
questions)

“1. Which objects belong together?

2. How many numbers/elements are
there in each set? Student 1: “There is the

the set of even
numbers, and the set of
polyhedral. But there is
also a set of round
objects and a set of
pointy objects. There
are 6 well-defined sets.”

Student 2: “Yes”

Student 3: “All the hats

belong to the set of
round objects. The pine
trees and two of the
polyhedral belong to the
set of pointy objects.”

“Very well said! Lets give them a “Very

Good clap class!”

(The teacher will ask another set of

questions)

“a. Did you group the objects correctly?

b. How many sets elements are there
in each set?
c. Can you give your own examples of
well-defined sets and null set?
d. What is the importance of sets in daily
life?” Student 1: “Yes”

Student 2: “There are 6

well-defined sets”

Student 3: “The set of

primary colors, the set
of letters in the word
“arrange”, and the set of
types of matter”

Student 4: “Sets are

used to store a
collection of linked
things. They are
essential in all fields of
mathematics because
sets are used or
referred to in some
manner in every branch
of mathematics. They
are necessary for the
construction of
increasingly
complicated
mathematical
structures”

“Awesome! Let us give the class a “Boom

Clap”, everyone did great!”
C. Presenting examples/ (The teacher will present (The students will listen
Instance of the new lesson examples/instances of the new lesson) attentively)

 A set is a collection of objects, things or

symbols which are clearly defined. In the
objects above the sets are;
1. Set of school supplies 3. Set of
things worn by girls
2. Set of gadgets 4. Set of
things worn by boys
The groups are called sets for as long as
the objects in the group share a
characteristic and are thus, well
defined. We have four well-defined sets
in the objects above.
 The individual objects in a set are called
the members or elements of the set.
Example: three of the elements in set 1
belong to a set of school supplies (ruler,
ballpen, and notebook). Can you name
elements of other sets? The symbol
“∈ ” is used to indicate that an
object is an element or member of the
set.
 When we define a set, if we take
pieces of that set, we can form what is
called a subset. For example, we
have the set {1,2,3,4,5}.
A subset of this is {1,2,3,}, another
subsets are {3,4}, {2,3,5} or even {1}.
However, {1,6} is not a subset, since 6
is not in the parent set.
A symbol for subset is ⊆
 The universal set U is the set that
contains all objects under
consideration. At the start, “objects”
is our universal set
.
 The null set is an empty set.
Example: If H is the set of boys in an
exclusive school for girls, then H is
called empty set since there were no
boys in that school. The null set is a
subset of any set. The symbol ∅ or {
} will be used to refer to an empty set
or null set.
The cardinality of a set is the number of
elements contained in that set. Example:
In the objects given, the cardinality of set
of gadgets is 3, set of things worn by
boys is 2. The cardinality of a set A is
written as n(A).

D. Discussing new concepts (The teacher will give new concepts to

and practicing new skills # 1 practice new skills)

a. Is the given set well-defined?

Justify your answer. Student 1: Yes, thus let
1. {subjects in Grade 7 } Yes/No A be the set therefore;
because __________________
2. { popular actors } Yes/No A= {English, Math,
because__________________ Science, Filipino, ESP,
TLE, MAPEH, AP}

Student 2: No, because

it is subjective.

“Very well said!”

b. Which of the following are empty

sets and why? Student 1: “Because
1. Triangles with four sides. It is an there are no triangles
empty set because _______ with four sides”
2. Pandas in the Philippines. It is an
empty set because _______ Student 2: “Because
3. Actors who are politicians. It is a Pandas are generally
set because ________ loaned from China and
require a lot of care”

Student 3: “It is a well-

defined set”

“Very Good! All of your answers are

correct! Keep up the good work!”

a. Identify the elements, subsets and Student:

V = {all the vowels of
English alphabet}
Element:
{a, e, I, o, u}
Subset:
{a}, {a, e}…{a, e, I, u}

its very promising!” Element:
{1,3,5,7,9}
Subset:
{1}, {1,3}…{1,3,5,7}
Cardinality: 5

F. Developing mastery (Leads (The teacher will let the students (Students will perform
to Formative Assessment) complete the table by determining the seatwork)
whether the given set is well-defined,
not well-defined or null set. If well-
defined, give the elements, three
subsets and its cardinality.)

their work) 1. Well-Defined
Elements:

Subsets:
{Monday}, {Mon, Tue}…
{Mon, Tue, Wed, Thu}

5. Not Well-Defined
(The teacher will let the students reflect
with their work)
“Me sir!”
“Who got the highest score?”

“Very Good! It seems that everyone did a

very good score!”

G. Finding practical (The teacher will let the students do the (Students answers may

1. Give 3 examples of well-defined sets in
real life situations.

lead to generalizing the lesson) vary)
