TAB Reaction Prompts

Write a brief paragraph about your reactions to the TAB experience you went through in class.
Answer the following questions to the best of your ability...

1. How did the TAB experience effect you as a learner?

a. It allowed me to step outside of my comfort zone and be creative. I made
an origami flower and tried a few others as well. Typically, I would choose
painting or drawing, but since we had the opportunity, I wanted to try
something new. I was also more motivated to work as I was having fun with
it as it is a choice that I made.
2. What are the strong points to a TAB based classroom/lesson set up? What are
the down sides?
a. Some strong points are, creativity, no rules or no right way, no guidance,
and freedom. Another strong point of this is how rewarding it can be. Your
artwork can turn out well if you spend a lot of time with it, and it is
something that you get to choose to do. Some more are, no comparison
between the student and teacher, problem solving skills, and can boost a
student’s confidence. Some down sides are a lot of prep work and materials
go into it. Once you get past that, then it can be a lot of fun and a successful
art project. Another downside to this is deciding what you want to make or
finding what you want to explore with. One last downside is that it is a lot for
the teacher or supervisor to overlook in an elementary classroom.
3. What are some educational theories of practices that are used/highlighted in the
TAB model?
a. Some educational theories are that it is teaching students to how to think
and be creative. Instead of providing directions and a step-by-step model, you
are leaving your students with the choice of everything. Another practice that
is highlighted is problem solving. The students must learn how to create
something on their own and overcome any road bumps they may come
across. Self-reflection is another practice used, and that can be used during or
after they complete the project before they move on to the next thing.
Students will also use social skills to communicate with one another as
students may learn from one another or other staff in the room.
