1. Periodic Function
Definition
A function f(x) is said to be periodic with period p > 0, if f(x) is defined for all real x,
and f(x + p) = f(x) for all x, where p is the smallest number satisfying this property.

2. Fourier Series Introduction

 The functions sin x and cos x are periodic with period 2, since

sin( x + 2) = sin x and cos( x + 2) = cos x

 Sin nx and Cos nx are also periodic with period 2/n.

 We shall consider f(x) = 1 as periodic with any period

 a0 + a1cos x + b1sin x + a2cos 2x + b2sin 2x is periodic with

• period 2.
3. Fourier Series Definition
 Any continuous periodic function f(x) of period 2L can be

represented by the trigonometric series:

a0  n n
f ( x)    (an cos x  bn sin x)
2 n 1 L L
 This is also true for any piecewise continuous (has finite points of

discontinuities)periodic function f(x) of period 2L with some

conditions
