OBJECTIVES:
By the end of the lesson,
1. Students will be able to define probability
2. Students will be able to identify the likelihood of an event occurring based
on sample space.
3. Students will be able to calculate probability of an event using a ratio.

MATERIALS:

 Sample problems
 Student handout

TEACHER STUDENTS ENGAGEMENT

Hello class! Hello teacher!
Today we will be learning about
probability. Can anyone tell me Probability….
what you think probability
means?
( open conversation - 2mins )

Probability refers to the likelihood

of an event occurring. It is
represented as a number as a
number between 0 and 1. If the
probability is 0, the event is
impossible, and if it is 1, the

event is certain. In between, the

probability indicates how likely an
event is to occur.

Now, let’s take a look at some

examples.

Example 1. A coin toss where the

outcome is either heads or tails.

Example 2. Rolling a die where

the outcome is a number from 1
to 6.

( open conversation - 5 minutes )

Modeling:

Now, let’s look at an example. If

we roll a die, what is the
probability of rolling a 3?

( on the whiteboard, the teacher

demonstrates the sample space
and probability calculations )

Sample Space: 1,2,3,4,5,6

Probability of rolling a 3: 1/6

( open conversation – 5minutes)

Independent Practice:

Now, I want you to calculate the ( works independently on

probability of an event your completing the worksheet )
worksheet using ratio of the
favourable outcomes to the
possible outcomes.

Alright class, we learned how to

calculate probability based on the
sample space. Remember to keep Thank you, teacher
on practicing with different
scenarios to strengthen your
probability skills.
