a. Identify probability.

b. Explain the basic concepts of probability.

c. Interpret the probability of an event.

d. Demonstrate understanding of the basic concepts of probability.

e. Use precisely counting techniques and probability in simple problems related to


different fields of endeavour.

To know how many possible different outfits you
can choose, this morning we are going to discuss
about basic concept of probability. I want you to
listen carefully, for afterwards you will be

Probabilty

*The branch of mathematics that deals with


uncertainty.

*a measure or estimation of how likely it is that


an event will occur.

Probability of Events

The probability of an event, P (event), is number


from 0 to 1 which tells how likely the event is to
happen.

Probability Rules

1. The probability of any event is a number (Students give an examples)


(either a fraction,a decimal or a percent) from 0
to 1.
2. If an event will never happen, then its
probability is 0.

Example: When a single die is rolled, the


probability of getting an 8?

Since the sample space consists of 1,2,3,4,5, and


6, it is impossible to get an 8.
3. If an event is sure to happen, then the
probability is 1.

Example: When a single die is rolled, the


probability of getting a number less than 7?

Since all the outcomes {1,2,3,4,5,6} are less than


7.
4. The sum of the probabilities of all the
outcomes in the sample space is 1.
