Introduction to Probability

I. OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
A. define Probability;
B. identify the different terminologies used in Probability;
C. give examples for each terminology used in Probability;
D. determine possible outcomes and total number of outcomes of an experiment or
event; and
E. relate the lesson into real-life situations.

II. SUBJECT MATTER:

A. Topic: Introduction to Probability

C. Materials: Printed visual materials, paper strips, containers

III. PROCEDURE:

1. Prayer
2. Checking of attendance

A. MOTIVATION
Today is indeed a great day because we
shall be learning new concept in
mathematics. But before we finally jump
in into our discussion, let’s first have a
simple activity. Our activity is entitled “4
pics 1 word”. And I know most of you
here are already familiar with this game. I
have here 4 different words that you have
to guess using the given pictures.

B. PRESENTATION
From our activity, what are the 4 words
that we have guessed or answered?
 Experiment
 Outcome
 Sample space
 Event
Now, if we try to analyse these 4
terminologies, what do you think is our
lesson for today?

The four words that we have encountered

in our activity earlier are actually the four
key terminologies that are used in
Probability. With that, our lesson for
today talks about the “Introduction to
Probability”.

C. LESSON PROPER
What is Probability?
Probability is a branch of mathematics
that deals with measuring the likeness
that an event will happen. It is primarily
concerned with making predictions about
the occurrence of events.
Since I have made mentioned a while ago
that the four terminologies are used in the
concept of probability, hence, let’s have a
definition for each term so that they can
be understood easily.

Going back to our activity, the first

terminology we have identified is the
“experiment”.
Experiment is an activity that can be
performed repetitively.

Examples: tossing a coin, drawing a card,

rolling a die, picking a number

Outcome refers to the result of

performing an experiment.

Example: In tossing a coin, the possible

outcomes include either heads or tails.

Sample space is the set of all possible

outcomes in an experiment.

Example: In rolling a die, the sample

space is S = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6}

Event is a subset of a sample space. It

consists of one or more outcomes of an
experiment.

Example: In drawing a card from the

standard deck of 52 cards, some events
include getting a black card, picking a red
card, and choosing a face card.

Now, in order to further understand our

lesson, let’s have some examples.

Example 1:
Determine the possible outcomes in the
following experiments, and then write the
sample space and the total number of
outcomes.
a. Drawing a labelled with the seasons
of the year
b. Picking a color from the rainbow
colors
c. Choosing a month

Example 2:
Determine the possible outcomes for the
following events, and then list of
elements in the sample space and the
total number of outcomes.
a. Choosing a single-digit
odd number
b. Drawing a king from a
standard deck of 52
cards
c. Getting an even number from rolling
a die
D. GENERALIZATION
Now, let’s have the recapitulation of the
things that we have discussed today.
Again, may I ask:
 What is Probability?
 What are the four terminologies that
are used in Probability?
 What is an experiment? Outcome?
Sample space? Event?
 Aside from the given examples, can
you give me an example of
experiment? Outcome? Sample
space? Event

E. APPLICATION
To further understand our lesson, let’s
have another activity. This activity is
called “Make it Pass!” As you can see, I
am holding a pringles container that
contains a set of questions.
Each student will pass the container to
the person beside him/her as the music
plays. When the music stops, the last
student who was holding the container
will pick a question. If he/she answered
the question correctly, he/she will be
given a reward, but if his/her answer is
incorrect, there will be a corresponding
consequence. There will be a 10 seconds
allotted time for each question.

QUESTIONS
1. What is probability?
2. It is an activity that can be
performed repetitively.
3. What are the possible outcomes
in choosing a day for a picnic.
4. How many total number of
outcomes do we have in selecting
a diamond face card from the
standard deck of cards?
5. It refers to the result of
performing an experiment.
6. What is the sample space of
choosing an even number less
than 10?
7. Give an example of event in
probability.
8. What are the possible outcomes
in selecting a month with 30 days
only?
9. How many total number of
outcomes in picking a consonant
letter?
10. What is a sample space?

IV. EVALUATION:
Quiz:
Directions: Read and understand each statement carefully. Identify what is being asked in each item.
1. Determine the possible outcomes in the following experiments, and then write the sample space
and the total number of outcomes in each experiment.
a. Selecting an elected president of the Philippines
b. Drawing an ace card from the standard deck of cards
c. Choosing a barangay in Peñablanca that starts with letter “B”
d. Picking a color from primary and secondary colors.
e. Selecting a prime number less than 20.
f. Choosing a perfect square number less than 100.

V. ASSIGNMENT:
 Have an advanced reading on the Fundamental Counting Principle.
