The PUP Logo

1. MEANING
The star in the logo stands for the perfection of the human person as well as the search for truth, while
the five concentric circles depict infinite wisdom.

Both the five-pointed star and the five concentric circles stand for quintessence, meaning the highest
form of quality or the most perfect example of creation. The two arcs of laurel symbolize excellence and
quality of education as demonstrated by the rich achievements of the University in over a century of its
existence.

The star is golden yellow not only because this is a star’s natural color but also because, together with
the dark maroon used as background, it is the traditional color of the University.

The five concentric circles are white because it symbolizes purity.

2.2 PARTS OF THE PUP LOGO

The PUP Logo consists of the following parts:

 The five-pointed star

 The five concentric circles
 The inner circle
 The two arcs of laurel leaves
 The name “POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES”
 The year “1904”
 The outer circle

3
2.2.1 The five-pointed star
The five-pointed star is positioned at the center of the logo and is stylized with inner bevel and two
colors (or two-tone) – Golden Yellow for the left sides of each point and Goldenrod for the right sides.
(See 2.1 for the technical details of each color).

2.2.2 The five concentric circles

The five white concentric circles are superimposed on the five-pointed star. The circles are evenly
spaced and are of the same outline width. Three inner circles are positioned inside the five-pointed star
while the outermost circle extends only up to the middle part of each edge point of the star.

2.2.3 The inner circle

The inner circle is colored maroon and it contains both the five-pointed star and the five concentric
circles. The space from each point of the star to the edge of the inner circle has the same distance
between each concentric circle.

2.2.4 The two arcs of laurel

The two arcs of maroon laurel are positioned at the left and right portions of the logo outside the inner
circle. Each arc has 8 stout leaves and a small leaf placed at the top of the stem. The leaves are pointing
in an upper-outward motion to symbolize excellence and quality of education as demonstrated by the
rich achievements of the University in over a century of its existence. The tip of each laurel starts at 27°

4
while the bottom point of the stem ends at 74°. The space from the border of the inner circle to the
inner leaves is half the distance between each concentric circle.

2.2.5 The name “POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES”

The name “Polytechnic University of the Philippines” in maroon Cambria2 typeface forms a 230° arc on
the upper portion of the insignia. The space from the border of the inner circle to the base of the
name is half the distance between each concentric circle.

2.2.6 The year “1904”

The year “1904” in maroon Cambria typeface forms a 24° arc at the bottom of the insignia honoring our
University’s humble beginnings. The space from the border of the inner circle to the top of the word is
half the distance between each concentric circle.

2.2.7 The outer circle

A white outer circle serves as an outer rim decoration of the University logo when set against a dark
background.

2.4 THE PUP LOGOTYPE
The University logotype is “Polytechnic University of the Philippines”. It is maroon in color and uses the
typeface Trajan Pro3, bold font weight, 100 % normal, normal tracking. It should be used whenever the
logotype of the University Signature is to be reproduced. The PUP Logo may appear without the
logotype but the logotype should never be used without the Logo. It should always appear together
with the logo unless it is used as part of a text.

3. PUP LOGO GUIDELINES
As a general rule, third parties may not use the PUP Logo ("Logo"). On this document are the limited
circumstances under which third parties may use the PUP Logo. The Logo must always be used pursuant
to the specifications on this page to identify Polytechnic University of the Philippines. Any use that falls
outside of these specifications is strictly prohibited.

Third parties may only use the Logo without a license only under the following limited circumstances:

 In advertising, marketing collateral, or a website that references your connection with PUP (for
example, the material states that you are an authorized partner of PUP) provided that the area
in which the PUP Logo is used includes the corporate logo of at least 1 other company with
which you have a similar relationship.

 In an area of a website, advertising, or marketing collateral exclusively dedicated to PUP, and in

such a manner that associates services with the PUP Logo.

The following guidelines must be followed for all use of the Logo:

1. The Logo may not be used in any manner that might imply that any non-PUP materials,
including but not limited to goods, services, websites, or publications are sponsored, endorsed,
licensed by, or affiliated with PUP.

2. The Logo may not be displayed as a primary or prominent feature on any non-PUP materials.
Companies using the Logo pursuant to these guidelines must also display in the primary and
more prominent position, their own logo(s), business name, product names, or other branding.

3. The Logo may not be imitated or used as a design feature in any manner.

4. The Logo may not be used in a manner that would disparage PUP or its services.

5. The Logo must be used as provided by PUP with no changes, including but not limited to
changes in the color, proportion, or design, or removal of any words, artwork, or trademark
symbols. The Logo may not be animated, morphed, unevenly stretched, or otherwise distorted
in perspective or appearance.

6. Use only approved PUP Logo artwork:

 The Logo may only appear in as specified in its specifications. The Logo may never be
broken into multiple colors.

 The Logo must always be accompanied by the registered trademark symbol ®.

7. To properly stage the Logo, a minimum clearance between the Logo and other elements must
be maintained. The height of the Logo indicates the measurement of minimum clearance
between the Logo and other elements on all sides of the Logo.

8
8. A “safe area” should always exist around the logo to allow for maximum legibility. No elements
such as typography, other logos, or graphics should intrude over the safe area. Placing the logo
too near a cut or folded edge also violates the safe area. The safe area is equal to one fourth
(¼) or twenty-five percent (25%) the height of the Logo used for that application.

9. The Logo must always be at least 100 pixels in width.

10. The Logo must appear only in a horizontal position.

11. When the Logo is placed against a colored (or dark) background, it must have the outer circle
(See 2.2.7 for more information). The Logo must not be contained in a white box.

12. The Logo must stand alone and may not be combined with any other object, including but
not limited to other logos, words, graphics, photos, slogans, numbers, design features, or
symbols unless stated in the Visual Identity Standards (See 4.0 for more information). The
Logo must never be used to represent the word "PUP" in text, including in a headline,
product-name logotype, or body copy.

13. The Logo must not be incorporated or used in any manner as part of, or in close proximity to
another company's name, domain name, product or service name, logo, trade dress, design,
slogan, or other trademarks. The Logo must never appear with any other symbol or icon
(except the registered trademark symbol); contained within a box, circle, or other shape; or
combined with any other name, logo, or icon to create a co-branded logo.

9
14. The attribution clause "The PUP Logo is a trademark of the Polytechnic University of the
Philippines" must accompany use of the Logo.

15. Neither the Logo nor the PUP name may be used in any other company name, product name,
service name, domain name, website title, publication title, or the like.

16. Non-PUP materials should not mimic any PUP advertising, product packaging, or website design.

17. Under no circumstances may third parties use, imitate, or play off of the PUP tagline ("The
Country’s 1st Polytechnic U”). This tagline is reserved for exclusive use by PUP in certain
jurisdictions.

PUP reserves the right in its sole discretion to terminate or modify permission to display the Logo, and
may request that third parties modify or delete any use of the Logo that, in PUP's judgment, does not
comply with these guidelines, or might otherwise impair PUP's rights in the Logo. PUP further
reserves the right to object to unfair uses or misuses of its trademarks or other violations of applicable
law.

4. VISUAL IDENTITY STANDARDS

4.1 INTRODUCTION
The Polytechnic University of the Philippines in its vision to lay new foundations to transform itself into
an epistemic community aims to optimize itself through efficiency and effectiveness.

In this quest, a new organizational structure is put into place to streamline the various initiatives of the
University. To establish the identity of each unit, some develop their own logo or branding when
communicating to their stakeholders and industry partners.

While the University acknowledges that these units are vital in fulfilling the University’s agenda, it is
essential that a strong relationship of these units with the University must also be communicated.

Therefore, a standard for visual elements was developed to guide the PUP Community on the
appropriate use of University logos and marks in accordance to their mandate and functions.

4.2 OBJECTIVES
 Establish a unified institutional identity and integrity consistent across all units of the University.

 Establish a common commitment of all PUP units to the University’s vision of quality and
excellence.

 Strengthen the University’s image positioning, “The Country’s 1st Polytechnic U” with
contemporary and streamlined visual identity.

 Save on University resources in the production and application of trademarks and other
branding expenses.
