SAFETY WARNINGS

ELECTRICAL

115 V 60 Hz VOLTAGES EXIST WITHIN THE TM99 ELECTRONIC UNIT. TAKE

CARE WHEN OPENING THE UNIT FOR SERVICING OR MAINTENANCE. UNDER
CIRCUMSTANCES WHEN THE TM99 ELECTRONIC UNIT HAS BEEN SWITCHED
TO THE OFF CONDITION VIA THE HINGED FRONT PANEL 115 V 60 Hz PUSH
BUTTON, IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE THE FILTER BOX TERMINALS ARE STILL
LIVE.

MECHANICAL

IT IS DANGEROUS TO REMOVE THE COVER OR ATTEMPT TO SERVICE ANY

MOVING PART OF THE FM TELEMTRY TRANSDUCER ASSEMBLY WHILE THE

PURPOSE AND PLANNING INFORMATION

PURPOSE

1. The Standard Naval Torsionmeter is designed to measure and display ship propeller
shaft torsion locally and remotely in the IPMS. A full description of both facilities is
included in this publication.

PRINICIPLE AND APPLICATION

2. When a propeller shaft is put under torsion, principal lines of stress following helical
paths appear in the shaft surface. The amount of stress is measured by strain gauges
bonded to the shaft surface. The strain gauges are electrically connected in a bridge
circuit; the dc voltage output of this bridge modulates the 35 kHz carrier frequency of
the FM Telemetry Transmitter for transmission from a rotating shaft to a fixed circular
aerial concentric with the shaft. The signal is then demodulated and the analogue
output proportional to torque is displayed. Torque zero setting and calibration facilities
are provided. The frequency signal is such that zero torque is equal to 35 kHz and
maximum torque is a nominal 20 kHz for Ahead and 50 kHz for Astern.

3. The electrical power supply required on the shaft for sensing and signal transmission
is transferred hereto by a 1.6 MHz radio frequency link between the fixed and rotating
aerials and converted to the required dc form.

STANDARD NAVAL TORSIONMETER

4. The sensing system called the FM Telemetry Transducer Assembly comprises a

rotating element clamped firmly to the shaft and a cover rigidly attached to the ships
structure. The power transmitter, signal conditioning and control circuits are housed in
the TM99 Electronic Unit. Torque outputs are 4-20 mA signals for the IPMS console.
The main items of the installation and their component parts are as follows:

(a) FM Telemetry Transducer Assembly

The dimensions and drawing references of this assembly are given in Table
1.1. The following items complete the assembly:

(i) Rotating Aerial Unit

Mounted on the shaft with continuous banding.

(ii) FM Telemetry Transmitter Unit (See Table 1.1)

Mounted on the shaft with continuous banding.

(iii) Aerial

Mounted around the inside of the transducer cover.

(iv) Aerial Matching Unit

Mounted externally on/adjacent to the transducer cover.

(b) TM99 Electronic Unit

This unit is housed in a drip-proof metal case with a lockable cover. All external
connections are through pressure glands or watertight co-axial sockets. Six
self-contained modules are mounted within the enclosure (i), (ii), (iii). Four plug-
in printed circuit boards mounted within the unit hinged sub-assembly (iv), (v).

(i) Power Supply Unit (2 off)

(ii) Power Transmitter (2 off)

(iii) 4-20 mA, Isolating transmitter output. (2 off)

(iv) PCB Assembly Tones Generator and Calibration (2 off)

(v) Signal Conditioning and Auto-polarity Unit (2 off)

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

5. The TM99 Electronic Unit is not rendered safe by switching off the 115 V 60 Hz ac
supply at the front panel. Live points exist between the input filter FU1 and the
ON/OFF switch S1 at all times that the unit is connected to this supply.

This equipment houses components within the sub-assemblies which contain

Electrostatic Sensitive Devices. To prevent damage care should be exercised when
working on those marked with a and relevant earth precautions taken.
